@Broark those are really cool!! I am after something a little more conventional but i'd love to see pics of those if you end up getting them.

@yung_flynn those Randy's trousers are great, i'll look for those in my size elsewhere online, that's about the closest i've seen so far to what i'm looking for...

Honestly seeing the variety of results from you all here is kind of vindicating me, i was feeling really dumb for not being able to find what seems ( to me ) to be such a timeless-seeming, classic-fitting pair of pants anywhere, and as this page shows there are any number of options that are very close in some ways, a little off in others... just very strange that it's been so hard to track down. But I am considering a few options (Buzz x William Gibson, Nuu, Randy's are the closest -- thanks you guys) and will maybe end up ordering a couple of them to compare. I appreciate all the help!

To be honest the entire reason I even want these is because i've been haunted by a man I saw walking on the side of the road while riding my motorcycle back through northern Sinaloa... he was dressed in some worn-out black work pants and boots, and a brownish-reddish work shirt; I just rode past him in an instant, we had no interaction, but for some reason his outfit was so memorable to me; I had spent seven months without buying, or even being tempted by, a single garment, but in that moment I had this mad desire for a pair of pants like that and have been slowly hunting for them ever since.

^ With that story I really want you to find those pants. What are the chances that what he was actually wearing was just some Dickies or Dockers or something?

Also worth considering some chinos / work trousers from Timeworn, I can’t ever keep track of their lot numbers but they probably have something that would fit the bill.

What makes a patch age like this?

Thanks. They were a tour pair, 12 different people wearing them over the year.

So the only answer l can give, which is true incidentally,  is that their backstory of wear and tear and different environments and washing 'techniques' over 12 months, is what makes a patch age like that. Personally I thought it would deteriorate/fall apart along time ago but it's hanging in there. Tbh l only wear them occasionally - they are from my Grail rail, jeans that are a little fragile in places but are also aged perfectly, sometimes babied, sometimes not. They have all the right ingredients to be mistaken for a vintage pair, right?

Anyone plugged into the vintage Nike / sneaker world, primarily asking @Double 0 Soul, do you know of any shoes that would be a good modern version or substitute for the OG waffle racers? I know they were reproduced in the 2010s and some examples could probably be found, and I am aware of the Margiela Sprinters which I think look pretty sweet but carry an eye-watering price tag... Anyone have suggestions for brands or models to search for?

You came to the right place.. :D ..  are you looking for a modern shoe in the style of a waffle racer or are you looking for a repro of a 70s era Nike running shoe.. in a similar style to the waffle racer? .. something akin to LD-1000?

I can help you with og Nike or Nike repros.. i'm less helpfull re- Maison Margiela.

Either a modern shoe in that style or a repro of something similar to them. Really focusing on how sleek the waffle racers were. The LD-1000 are a bit too chunky for my tastes, especially with the shape of the rear with the heel and sole meeting in that strange hourglass shape, but I'm still open to checking those out.

How dare you! .. i love that shape.. it's their raison d'être

Ok, let me have a look through some magazines for something slicker than average.

In the meantime, the clickable links to the right will give you some inspiration from the last decade of Nike vintage repros.. anything pops out, let me know. B)

Following this conversation as well, I was interested in the LD-1000s for a bit but something about the shape threw me off too.
Nice blog there, never been a big Nike guy but there's some cool models there.

..even the humble Waffle was slick

..but bear in mind, these shoes are repro’s of pared down running shoes, but folks are not wearing the repros to run a 3hr marathon, they’re wearing them as daily wearers so they still need to be comfortable for the modern day lumox, hence the fatter mid-sole.

Maybe it's not actually the shape that I'm not fond of, but rather the colors they currently have available.
These khaki / yellow ones don't look half bad.

Forgot about the Spalwart Marathons, looks like they have quite a few on sale on their website as well. Might give those a go.

This is an understandable sentiment and helps to put the uglification of once-nice things into perspective

It's why they're still so saught after by collectors..

Back in the 70s the foam mid-sole was still made from 100% natural rubber, which didn't suffer from hydrolysis so these 70s era Nike runners are still wearable.. albeit, carfully on special occasions.. come the 1980s, the natural rubber was replaced with synthetic rubber which just crumbles to powder with age, sometimes without ever taking them out of the box..

The white / blue is def the best coulour.. the green / yellow, which i assume is homage to Oregon look more like genie shoes or Indian wedding shoes.

I don't really get the faux-wear thing, i've seen Autry and Golden Goose do it.. puts them in the same realm as distressed denimz from my perspective.

..but, if that's what you want, go for it.. i don't think there is any tech in them, so you're just paying £600+ for the branding.. they look very much like, German track and field shoes, eBay used to be a wash with old unbranded East German sneaks, you could pick them up for £40.. i used to post them over on DB.. for that^ amount of money, you could get yourself a very decent pair of 70s era Nike from Yahoo.. in 3yrs time when the MMs are worth £50 the Nikes will still be worth what you paid for them.. but it's your do$h.

Completely agree with you - what makes those worth so much money? Nobody needs goat skin leather on shoes like that. I like bits of the design, but I’m no fool willing to spend over $600 on something like that. And you are right about that kind of money fetching the real deal.

Spent some time reading through the vintage Nike Wordpress site you linked a few comments back and plan to do more research today. I’m sure there are still deals to be had online if we look in the right places…

Use value vs exchange value: one of the foundations of capitalism! The hyperinflated price of high fashion clothing is one of the best illustrations of this principle, I think.
