Levi's Vintage Clothing

Recommended Posts

These pre-serated patch, pre care label 502-0117s which I got earlier this year appear to have fabric defects, which did not appear until after they were brushed. Does anybody know what has caused this? The about 50 year old jeans number 16 on the button with Scovill zip seem sound despite the flaws.

only able to confirm that the rumour was around already in Jan on denimbro...  tbh: if this is their return to the triple pleat, I find it hard to shed a tear... [lacklustre pre-distressing, oversized and imbalancing pocket w. flaps, aghast I say!]

^But they're stitch for stitch reproductions, what do you mean??

I gave up on them around 2005, with only 3 new pieces bought since. Plenty of decent Japanese companies doing better if you dont mind the lack of arcs.

Still got several wearers and 2 pairs of nos so no l won't be shedding a tear either.

I guess I hold a special place in my heart for the late 1800s lvc offerings, as they have made some nice ones; had both the late 90s triple pleat [which was inaccurate, but balanced] then the more recent one; both great jackets; this one feels a little sad for the company to go out with...

Tbh my friend, apart from the last Cone triple pleat (with no pocket flaps) all of the other triple pleats are inaccurate anyway - but l see what you mean, that distressing warrants a face palm emoji.

Lvc's best time was (imho) 1999-2003, just before it changed from Levis vintage clothing to 'Lvc'. Saying that, their 1955 model has always been (more or less) consistent over the last 26 years or so, as is their 1947 model to an extent. So l guess for the last few fanboys (and fangirls) it's time to stock up on what's left. Maybe I'll have a look at the 55s when l'm up in London next although doubtful I'll end up with a pair.

oh yes:

the '76 and that triple pleat; pretty strong last hurrahs from cone!

the denim on both is >chef's kiss<

Absolutely. Then there's the 1880 in natural indigo. Amazing. While the triple pleat in duck was gorgeous too. I can understand a lot of the dismissal if LVC but the ultimate compliment must be how many Japanese companies brought out their own me-toos .

I am looking at a type one jacket on eBay.

Seller says it it is from 2007, and that they believe it was made without a red tab.

I believe Levis didn't start putting the tab on jackets until later, but having looked through catalogs I can't see a version without a red tab.

Jacket is labelled as made in Turkey but I suspect the tab has been removed by someone.

Anyone heard of a type one without a tab?

I think you’re saying that historically, Levi’s (and not LVC) started using the red tab in 1936/37 and perhaps the Type I was released before then so wouldn’t have had a red tab? I’d need to check my books, which I don’t have to hand, so probably an expert like @Dr_Heech can confirm.

Furthermore, even if this is the case, I think you’re asking if LVC would have made a Type I repro without a red tab to reflect this period. I don’t know but I’d guess not.

More importantly, as you managed to find 3 US-made Cone Type IIs for an excellent price, why on earth would you want a Turkish made LVC Type I without a tab?!

I've a 555 type I LVC from 1998 (if I read the codes accurately back when I was a more thorough researcher), and it's got a red tab. Same with a type II from that era.

If the tab was removed, you should be able to see that I think. Ask for some closer photos of the area where the tab should have been. See if there is some red fabric left between the fabric layers in case they cut it off. Or in case they undid the stitching to remove it, you also should be able to see that in the stitch lines on the pocket. Normally that stitch should be continuous. If someone undid the stitching to remove the tab and then restitched it, you should see that.

It also could be a sample maybe?

...

To recap..

So the first pocket-flapped 506xx was introduced in c.1927, the details included small (501xx fly sized) unbranded buttons. From c.1928 until c.1935 the jacket used branded small buttons, but then in early 1936 Levis changed that and started to use the larger, waist-band sized buttons. Although the red tab was added around late 1936 on jeans pockets, it wasn't until mid 1937 that the tab was attached to jacket pockets. According to the book.

As for Lvc, your guess is as good as mine. To date they have only made the 506 repro from c.1936, which shouldn't really have a tab yet, but obviously does. The only other 506xx repro was the wartime version, which isn't relevant here.

Could be a sample version? These often dont have all the details that the shop-ready garments have (?)

Cheers for the info.

Looks like it has sold now, this was the jacket

Levis Vintage Clothing 1936 506 XX Denim Jacket XL 50" Type 1 LVC Big E 506XX | eBay

There's a good close up of the pocket but can't see any traces and if they've resown it they've done a very good job.

I actually like the idea of a jacket without a tab given that is more authentic but wouldn't be as keen if a previous owner has removed it.

Bit big for a sample I think although that would make sense.

To answer Maynard; I love type 2s but they don't really fit me sadly. I think I can *just* get away with the USA version, unwashed. However I still need to shift some timber for it to look better, and I definitely prefer the length of a type one.

I have a couple of type ones but one is miles bigger than anything I've seen recently, I also have a very heavily washed type one with no label that fits me great but can't find an unwashed version.

oooooof! thanks for sharing; honoured to be in the thoughts bank...

early model duck always so good & pants looks v. good... [no yoke is interesting]

looks exactly like a proper last hurrah, thanks for sharing...

this is a much better proper proper goodbye for lvc than than the faded pocket flapped triple pleat...

[been wearing my lvc 1870/80s tux around with happiness today; 9oz top & bottom is nearest to a tracksuit I've felt in a while... also been very enjoying the '55 cut; definite good feng shui tailoring jiggery pokery happiness going on there: unobtrusive leg but spacious top box and ankle...]

but alas; looks like the sizing on last duck pants wont accommodate my gaijin gut [the 36, the biggest size, wont get where I need it [I like space]...and duck isn't known for stretching...]
