I'm wondering if anyone here can help me find a particular style of eyeglass frame?

I generally wear the standard 50s-ish acetate type but find they won't stay put and tend to slide down my nose.

A while back I had a pair with the kind of nose-pads one usually sees on wire frame glasses. They worked better than anything else I've tried. Eventually they wore out as vintage frames are prone to do.

I'd love to find something similar. Maybe there's a company that will build custom?

I haven't had any luck with an internet search as the mainstream crap clutters the feed.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Carl,

I have the exact same issue and i had the same conversation with b_F only a few weeks ago.. i might be able to help, the reason i persuaded him to try Japan Rabbit was.. around a year ago, i found these frames by Hakusan Megane.

They're the T-Jerry's (or Jerry's)

ScreenShot2025-07-06at21_08_21.thumb.png.a0243a2c4e0ea4a8a55cb44d2066bd16.png

..but they're not cheap at around £5-600 on the auction sites (they haven't been in production for many years so it's worth waiting for a good pair) .. meaning they would hit the UK border at £800, i'd struggle to get my money back should i not be entirely happy with them..

I'm in a health scheme so i get my cost of optical back.. therefore i can buy a pair of fancy frames and my health scheme covers the cost of an eye test and replacement lenses every 12mths... i've been wearing the same frames for the last 7yrs so over that time.. it spreads the cost.

They have the wired cushions at the nose..

I found a similar looking pair at our local opticians without the wired nose cushions.. and took all the sizes.. measuring them up accordingly to see if they would suit me.. but if you want to wait for actual dimensions.. the glasses should land here at some point next week.

Realized I typed this reply to Double O and didn't send it.

Yes. Thats the kind of thing, Double O.

Agreed 800 quid is extreme.

I was expecting 3-500. Seems anything worthwhile is that much now...

..................................

Lorcan, Thanks. Those look like they might be a good compromise.

Who in the US does the best chainstitch hemming in your opinion?  The deeper I dive in this hobby, the more particular I get with the small details.  I like the the really small hem width (roughly 1/4 to 3/8 in.) that most Japanese brands have. The roping looks much better with a smaller width from my experience.  I recently had my Freewheelers hemmed by Railcar and the hem is almost a 1/2 inch and I don't love it.

I've had Blue Owl, Railcar, Science and Kindness, and Self Edge, hem different pairs of mine and the Blue Owl pairs have the best roping.

@nick682 Rain at Indigo Proof is the best in my experience, pricy but I think she’s the best.
The SE location here in Austin also does a great job, I can’t recall her name but I’ve had a couple pairs hemmed there specifically with good results.

That would be £800 with border charges applied, between £500 and £600 without.

If president man-baby gets his way, you too could experience these import joys..

I do think they're worth it though @CSL ... the finish and level of craftsmanship is superb, they still feel brand new.
The difference between these and factory produced acetate frames is like night and day.. the only thing i have which comes anywhere close is my c1960 MiA Rayban Caribbean but even those are not in the same ballpark.. not even close!

i'll post up some photos and dimensions over the weekend.

Sounds good, Double O. I'd like to see the pics and dimensions.

In the meantime I've been poking around and found some other brands that do that style nicely.

@CSL .. i've just been down to the local opticians to book an eye test and get my prescription lenses put into these Hakusan frames, they were telling me about a company they use called https://www.speccareservices.co.uk/ who can retrofit wired nose cushions to their existing acetate frames, you might be able to find a similar service on your side of the pond.

Does the height of the hem stitch vary by model an year much?

I noticed warehouse WW2 models have a notably higher stitch than say 1947 or 53.
ww2 is 9mm whereas other are more like 7mm

^ Just my opinion, but I don’t think so. I believe it simply depends on the setting of the individual operator’s hemming machine.

Just interesting that all WW2 models had 9-10 mm while others had thinner.
most people don’t care. I prefer 7-8 mm and 4x fold instead of the typical 3.
According to rockets up to late 40s it was 4x, then 3x

That's strange 00, did you try clearing your browser cache / cookies?
Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks B.. i've sorted it.

I've just managed to trigger the 'block response' again..

copy/paste of the image triggers it.. i got the image to work in the Unknown thread by screen grabbing it instead.

Whenever i click on a topic headline or the last page of a topic, it always sends me to the top of the page and not to the start of the unread replies line.

I seem to remember someone posted a fix for this, shortly after superfuture was updated a little while back?

Is this true? Can i get it to jump to unread replies?

I don't think so.

- Topic headline/title/name: Links for topics with updates since your last visit are the same as for topics where you're all caught up, so you'll always just end up on the first page.

- Last page: Links just have anchor tags to the HTML element with id="comments" on the last page, so will always take you to where comments start being listed on the page

- Timestamp below name of last commentor on topic: Might be the "fix" you've heard of (at least it's the only shortcut I know of), but it's pretty janky. Link pretty much contains the name of a stub of code to be run, but that code appears to be flawed, so will either work and take you to the last comment (least likely, in my experience), take you to the second-to-last-page (usually happens when last comment is at the beginning of a new page, so off-by-1) or take you to the last page and go to where the last comment was during initial load but then dynamically load content such as images afterwards which will result in that comment being pushed way below. Still, this is the route I usually take.

I'd love to hear it if there's a better way though.

It's weird for me too.

Some threads—"Nice Things" for example—it takes me to the newest reply when I click on the title. The "Self Edge" or "The Flat Head" thread, it takes me to the page before while other threads take me to the top of the latest page. I wish it would just take me to newest unread across the board. Interestingly, the SE and TFH replies per page are way more than any others so I think there is a bug for me.
