Assuming you're talking about the 15oz Texas cotton version, I would say 2 inches in the inseam, plus maybe another half inch with repeated washes. My pair has only had 3 washes, but the fit has slimmed and shrunk just a bit more after each one. I would hem maybe an inch longer than you're planning to accommodate for that extra shrinkage.

So my first pair of Samurais are dry after their first hot wash.  S510XX 19oz.  All measurements are BiG style.

 

Pre-wash:

 

Waist - 38"

Thigh - 15"

Knee - 11"

Opening - 10"

Rise - 13"

Inseam - 39"

 

 

Post-wash:

 

Waist - 37"

Thigh - 14.25"

Knee - 10.25"

Opening - 9.5"

Rise - 12.5"

Inseam - 36.5"

 

 

Should I put these through another hot wash?  How much more am I likely to get out of them?

2,5" in the inseam is already a lot for the 19 oz. I doubt you'll get a lot more out of it.

i love those wind elements.  i have the water elements but they no longer fit me, i recently had my 21oz s5000s rebuilt by self edge, what an amazing job they did bringing these back to life. i will post pics of both jeans soon

For the initial hot wash, how long do you guys put it in for? Any detergent used?

^no detergent, 30-40 degrees C (unless you need a lot shrinkage), no spin, 30 minutes.

 

500 OG, worn since September, 5 washes?

As much as I like my 710s, I'm getting a bit fed up with my pocket bags developing a new hole every week lately. It hasn't even been 6 months yet, first time I had pockets blow out on me that quickly  .

Been a while since last Samurai updates... first up, s5000vx purchased in late 2010 from indigo_junkie and worn pretty hard for a couple of years on account of them receiving the seal of approval from mrs mondo in the fit department.  Plus, these and some Okinawas (from the same source) were the only jeans I had for a while.  No idea how many washes, but probably not more than half a dozen and always by hand.

Next, some 710s... I've had these for three years or so... I vaguely remember trying to keep these as my "good" jeans, and the 19oz fabric is quite heavy for Australia in the warmer months — so I wasn't trying to put hard wear on these.  It just sort of happened.  Heh.  I can only remember washing these twice, when stuff got spilled on them.

Yeah had to put some contact cement on front and back of threads on pockets. Every day a new section would be falling apart, then seat has gotten quite worse, and my hem has majorly deteroiated. Kind of lame.

^Mondo, that is perfection right there.

 

My OG had the loose thread on every pocket (you should see the repair), but nothing else yet. Kind of the same as all Samurais. But if they changed to Poly thread I wouldn't complain.

This issue with thread breaking is very disheartening to me. I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on a new pair of jeans, and Sam 510OG are at the top of the list, yet the thread thing is keeping me from doing it. Whether it's $200  or $600 for a pair of jeans, the last thing that should be breaking is the thread.

^^Mondo. That VX denim is crazy. It was just too bad I couldn't make that lower rise work for me. I had them in the closet and never wore them. Glad it went to a good home.

So I'm still not 100% sure, is the thread on the OGs failing faster than other Samurai's or is it the same? I'm still planning on getting a S5000VX soon (my bank account has to get some breathing room first and I have to stop buying random shirts and shit ) but the whole thread discussion that popped up here recently makes me kinda think twice. On the other hand, I'm not a hard wearer and they'll enter a rotation anyways.

 

On that note, I'm dead set on the S5000 cut but I'm not certain about the denim yet. I handled the 21oz thanks to artisandenim and it's very nice. How does it stack up in terms of "interesting-ness" compared to the 17 and 15oz? The less uniform the denim, the better...

I agree. And I find the thread on the OG to behave exactly as on all my other Samurais. The arcs are also wearing off super fast, like on all the models with yellow ones.

The S0500XX isn't too bad either

 

Has a nice taper but still wide enough for boots (IMO) but it also has a higher rise
