  1. I got the seamen trousers today. I’ll wear them mostly in summer but had to try on. Our cat is already taking an interest.

  2. Picked up a pair of Catchball sneakers, pretty affordable from Musinsa (which I think is just a Korean proxy shop?). These are probably going to be my go-to for canvas sneakers going forward, the Ortholite sole is nice and cushioned. Canvas feels sturdy, unlike the US Rubber sneakers I got last year. I went for a size 30 which equates to US 12 and they feel great.

  5. Post-first wash, wearing in a bit while waiting for another wash, before sorting the arcuates and sending off for hemming - the 1101 1970's Big E's. Granted the light has made the photos well dodgy and the cuffing is making the lower leg not sit quite right, but hey, happy to contribute anyway. You can see the bright blueness of the fabric the most in the 3rd photo. I'm pleased with these, I can't usually wear a tapered jean of any kind as they grip my calves like they're trying to strangle my feet. Looking forward to seeing how the shape drapes and wears in over time once they're hemmed.

  6. I definitely sized up in these, maybe too much. This is the them after the 2nd hot wash, it was on the hottest setting and I’m much happier now as they were still looking clownish.

  7. My kids been wearing these made in USA Levi’s for a bit. They weren’t exactly unworn but they were quite dark when i first got them. These have become more expensive online and at shops but I’ve had some luck with people in the Midwest who don’t seem to care to do much research.

  9. While I should be writing a masters thesis, walking in the mud is more fun. It has been raining almost non stop for the past 14 days, so when I spotted an opening I took the dog out for a walk. It was nice and muddy. @Thanks_M8 that’s really cool. We have plenty of citrus trees (2 types of orange, lemon, 2 mandarins and one red grapefruit) but no yuzu. I recently tried to translate a yuzu peel tea recipe to orange and came out horrible.

  12. Got this Tender number off the Lost and Found sale. Very easy relaxed fit and I love how it looks with jeans. Chuffed to bits. Colour is hard to photograph with phone cam but the first pic is more true then the others, they are a bit rich in colour.

  13. I’m a lil surprised at the hate for the J113-SD. It’s kind of charming! The hood is super cool, with the profile shots almost giving Raf alien coat, and the fabric texture on the orange one looks sick — I’m looking at the shot of the back here. Actually that orange is pretty cool period, I’m glad to see E keeping trying new colors. The coat kinda reminds me of a puffer jacket from like the 90s, except it’s not a puffer jacket. I don’t see riot division at all, with the weirdly off-kilter and kinda sickly looking zips. Also the bottom pockets look absolutely jumbo, and if they hang so as to not bulk out when they’re full as well as every other Acronym jacket I’ve ever owned, that will actually be v useful. Also also they hang in a great spot when the sling is used. The black is less exciting and the jacket sling change is whatever. Overall the jacket’s not for me, certainly not at that price, but I’d take designs like this over goth spikes or huge logos any day. I hear you about it being totally different from when Acronym was putting out bangers every season ten years ago, but like, he already did that? and isn’t that space is a little played out by now? meh I know we gave this specific convo like six times per year so I’ll shut up.

  15. Not as scientifically important but still fun: My parents got a yuzu tree a few months back. Fruits and all, in the fruits were lots of seeds (around 20) about 1,3 cm diameter. So huge seeds for a citrus. Since our own yuzu died because it was grafted on a less hardy rootstock, we were on the search for a replacement for a while and behold: We put the seeds in germination containers and nothing happened for a good while. 6 - 8 weeks germination (1 still hasn't put it's head out, even though it is rooting), a bit of water and a warm spot and we got 6 plants, 1 coming. Let's hope they all pull through

  20. In September of last year, I joined an experiment aiming to do ultracold atomic physics with titanium. Traditionally, most ultracold experiments use elements from the first and second groups of the periodic table, which are relatively easy candidates for laser trapping and cooling due to their simple electron structure. In certain contexts, this same simplicity limits the types of interactions that can be engineered in the quantum systems that we build, which makes it appealing to look towards preparing ultracold samples of transition metals. This involves some added complication, and the experiment that I recently joined has been actively working towards generating a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of titanium for around 5 years, now. A MOT amounts to a cold (but not yet quantum-degenerate) dilute gas of atoms at a temperature of around 1 mK, and is the first step in most experiments involving ultracold atoms or molecules. As a point of reference, outer space has a temperature of 2.7 K, around 1000 times hotter. Once a cloud of a few hundreds of thousands of atoms is trapped in a MOT, they can be handed off to other more versatile traps and used toward any number of science goals—but most experiments involve this as a first step. In mid-October, we finally observed the world’s first MOT of titanium. This involves two colors of lasers—one at a wavelength of 391 nm, which is invisible to the human eye, and one at 498 nm, which is a beautiful teal color. It's been a pleasure working with this color of light, both from a technical and from an aesthetic perspective, and it's made the pictures very fun to show off. The trapped atoms themselves are the little teal dot in the first and last photos. For these photos, only around 1000 atoms were present, but they were still visible to the naked eye—which is really cool to me.

  21. It's grim January weather outside.. what better time for a shorts thread? I've had a bit of a love/hate relationship with shorts over the years.. back in my salad days, when i was skating and riding a lot i was never out of cargo/combat shorts, my shins were battered from pedal damage but at that age, i didn't really mind, i looked at them as battle scars.. come my 30s my shins were bumpy and the 'battle scars' had turned into broken veins, i became a bit self conscious of how battered my legs looked and kept them covered up, the only time i wore shorts was to do the decorating or the beach/swimming .. this made shit worse because my legs were always super-white.. then came a good 18yrs of total denim obsession where i would only ever wear jeans no matter what.. if it was 30° i'd be wearing jeans.. if it was -10 i'd be wearing jeans.. i'm over that now and rather than being perma-denimclad.. i just wears whatevers appropriate to my environment/activity.. if it's cold i'm wearing down and if it's hot.. i'm wearing shorts and my legs.. albeit a little scared look a lot less battered nowadays.. I digress.. 'Shorts' Back in the 90s i had quite a few pairs..a pair of Stussy shorts from their 'Superfly Gear' season in a washed out camo were my favourite.. they lasted me for years, i was never out of them, eventually they fell to pieces.. i was that attached to them i saved the top button .. i'll try and dig it out.. when we went to South America, i just bought a few pairs of ex-army cargo pants from JayJays the army surplus joint and got them hemmed into shorts at Terrace Tailors .. I don't know about you guys but i don't think repro cuts work for shorts.. perfect as jeans because the loose thigh comes in at the knee but cut them down at or above the knee and they're too wide and drape like a skirt.. when my kid was a toddler and i had dad knees i cut some SC-47s down and they just looked comical, i gave them a cuff.. that didn't work either so rather than pay for a hem.. i just binned them.. it's the same with OG spec chinos, the top block is too deep and if you balance it by going past the knee as Cabourn does they look even worse.. whispering grass-esque.. it throws out all your proportions and makes you look shorter than you actually are... Ugh! I like the Supreme Work shorts, they've been a staple summer release for decades, they just look like simple chino shorts but the boxy cut and midweight material is an absolute winner .. i don't think they've changed at all since the late 90s.. this was their 2015 line up I've got a few pairs or their more conservative colours (khaki, navy and grey) which i've bought vintage and cheaply. The only giveaway to the brand is the small box logo on the back pocket.. anyway, don't take my warped perspective as gospel.. what do you guys think/wear when the weather is too hot for jeans? I can probably dig some more vintage shorts out the wardrobe.. let's see how the thread goes.

  24. I live in southwest germany, the region is called Breisgau. Summers here are hot and dry, winters mild but we get frost for a week or two usually. Sometimes - 12°C, but only for a day or two. Not ideal weather for mediteranean plants, but I guess I have to try

  25. I'm from Israel. Summers are hot and humid and winters are relatively warm(5 to 18 C most days, rarely goes below 5), so ideal for these type of citruses. We're actually renting so I didn't planet the trees, but the fruit are amazing. Also they all ripe in different stages of winters, so there's that, and the flowers which are starting to bloon now smell amazing. I did planet some other stuff though. Sweet potatoes, beans, onions, garlic and spaghetti squash(which the wild boars have destroyed almost entirely). Where do you live?

  27. @Hopethisoneisnttaken thanks! Where do you live, if I may ask? Would love to have a tiny orchard myself. If you use the whole fruit it works out fine, imo. Since yuzu peel is s bit sweeter and more aromatic the recipe can be altered like this (at least i tried it and it worked fine). Tbh I only found out about yuzu because they are supposed to be pretty hardy (grafted on trifoliate orange down to -15 °C and on their own roots down to -12 °C) the fruits are great though. I'm on the lookout for other hardy species for our balcony right now, but most are just supposed to taste like bitter grapefruits or trifoliate oranges, which isn't my thing.

  34. 220A. Started wearing these regularly this past July or August. 4 machine washes. Really like these - denim, details, etc. Holding up pretty well overall, but did have to perform a crotch repair (broken threads) about a week ago (ie: ~6 months into regular wear).

  35. Went to Clutch in London for the Yamane pop up store, got to shake his hand and kind of talk to him but mainly got him recommend some pieces for me and walked away with these. I like the taper as the straight leg version looked a bit shapeless and short on me, these are roomy in the top block and tighten up as they go down. They are the one wash version and crispy right now and was wondering if I should bother with another hot wash, not sure how much the patch can endure.

  37. Great Lakes / Bubo also seems to have some great options, although I haven’t explored them much. I’d really like to try the PCT shorts, in particular, if they re-release them in another canvas. My one pair are the Bushmaster shorts in a very tightly woven light cotton canvass, and they’re the only poorly thought out / executed thing that I’ve ever had from Freewheelers. The bar tacking (of which there’s quite a bit) is done at high density and with thick thread, which seems to have punched right through the finely woven fabric, weakening it significantly right at all the points of stress. Incidentally, I recently got a pair of shorts from Sassafras (don’t remember the model number) that seem to be made from the exact same fabric, and that seem to have the same issue. It’s possible that this specific fabric is just way more susceptible than expected to this sort of thing, but it still seems like a pretty major manufacturing & QC oversight. Anyway, I have a sort of love / hate relationship with the Bushmaster shorts, as they really are well-designed and have aged beautifully in the short time that I’ve been wearing them. It’ll be a shame when they inevitably give out.

  39. I washed my 1101 BigE 1970, here are the measurements for a raw W33 / 1 wash at 40 degrees: Warehouse 1101 BigE 1970 Raw / 1 wash Waist: 44cm/40cm Front rise: 31 cm / 28.5 cm Back rise: 42.5 cm / 38 cm Thigh (top): 33 cm / 31 cm Inseam: 90 cm / 81 cm Leg opening: 21.5 cm / 20.5 cm For those who can help, I also have the Denime 221 BigE, it is very close to the 1101 BigE. My 221 is a size W32 and my 1101 a W33, both have almost the same measurements after washing at 40 degrees. The 1101 really shrinks a lot: 8 cm on the waistline and 9 cm in length. I advise you to take your usual size from Warehouse. Denime runs about one size larger than Warehouse in my experience. The fabric of the 1101 is slightly thinner than the 221 (-1oz), the canvas of the 1101 is really beautiful, with beautiful irregularities. The color of 1101 is slightly bluer than 221 which is slightly darker. Some different sewing details also due to the era (V-shaped stitch, different thread colors on the 221, etc.).
