Add me to the list of those who've had good service from Takeoff.

Think I've ordered from them three or four times at this point.

Can someone offer me some tech advice please?

I’ve got a 2012 macbook pro which was working perfectly until recently

The letter T stopped working, within 24hrs it went from having to press it 2 or 3 times to get it to register.. to having to apply force and manipulation.

I had to copy a ‘t’ and paste it into sentences :D

I thought it could just need a clean so before I popped the key out, I ordered a replacement key and hinge mechanism from eBay..

It was surprisingly clean under there so I gave it a wipe around with IPA and popped the new key back in.. it hasn’t seated perfectly.. I suspect I may have damaged one of the metal prongs which houses the plastic hinge with my forceful pressing.

...anyway, the T is working perfectly again but within 24hrs of this fix, the letter E (2x keys to the left) stopped working so I suspect this isn’t a sticky key issue.

Do any tech nerds know what’s causing it?

I don’t want to upset you, but fixing such issues with the keys on your own is likely to be quite challenging, if not impossible. I recently encountered a problem with the keyboard on my new MacBook Air after a small amount of coffee spilled on it. The keys still worked, but they started making a suspicious crunching sound. The spacebar, in particular, began to stick, and when typing quickly, there were often no spaces between words.

I tried removing the spacebar to clean underneath (there was indeed a hardened sticky drop), but I couldn’t reinstall the key properly. I managed to attach it somehow, but it only worked when pressed in the center and didn’t respond at the edges.

I ended up taking it to an Apple service center, where they explained that removing and reinstalling keys is almost impossible due to the fragile construction, which is prone to damage. The only solution, which I ultimately opted for, was to replace the entire keyboard, which required partial disassembly of the laptop. Including labor, which took about three hours, the repair cost me around $120.

^ They changed the style of switches and key mounts some time after the 2012 model. You can very much service the keyboards of the 2012 model at home (it’s the same model I have—the last of the great MacBooks, in a lot of ways—and I’ve needed to replace keys a few times). That said, I have no idea what might be going on with the ET scenario.

Yes tis true..

The model i have is on the cusp of the 2 different hinge mechanisms so i wasn't 100% sure which way to lift the key.. i carefully popped it out with surgical tweezers but it broke this part of the nylon hinge..

fullsizeoutput_42fb.thumb.jpeg.23a7c02b3a926c7e8205cce2b9cc4231.jpeg

..because it needs lifting over these hooks which you can't see under the key
fullsizeoutput_4303.thumb.jpeg.54f60224f7713035c8e303684fb32623.jpeg

The style of hinge depends on which dirction you lift the key..

I used the tweezers to press the rubber nipple with the key out and the T worked perfectly

I bought the replacement and popped it in.. it hasn't seated 100% perfectly because i suspect i have bent one of these^ hooks with my forcefull pressing... but hey, it works.

Now the E has stopped working, a friend of mine suggests "given the force/manipulation needed and the fact it's propagated to other keys, he'd  be inclined to say the PCB is failing, perhaps even just from old age.

I can't complain, its my home mac which i've used trouble free for 12yrs.. i've had 3 windows laptops at work during the same period.

..but I'm going to buy a replacement E on ebay and take it from there because if it was the PCB.. how did the key replacement solve the T issue?

Which brands make jeans with deeper pockets bags?

Fullcount and warehouse have nice cuts but the pocket bags are super shallow.
Freewheelers pockets are great.  Any others with deeper pockets?

I recall Mister Freedom having deepish pockets. That may vary by model though. I only own the 44s.

My Mister Freedoms have respectably deep pockets. Freewheelers not quite as much but as much as I need. The perfect balance. The king of pocket depth and durability is Tender. Ooe’s pockets leave me with no gripes. Warehouse, TCB, Fullcount all leave something to be desired. My one pair of Sugar Canes are a special edition but those are sturdy and deep enough, can’t say I know the standard cuts though.

I think the suggestion above about an inexpensive external keyboard makes sense. Before fully replacing the keyboard on my MacBook Air, I connected an external Wi-Fi keyboard, and while it took some time to get used to, the solution worked. Probably, even a very inexpensive USB keyboard could do the job.

I still have an old MacBook Air, I believe from 2011, and a MacBook Pro from 2007. Both still work, though with limited functionality. The keyboards on both are fine, and I’ve never replaced the keys. I don’t remember if anything spilled on the keys, but over so many years, it’s quite possible.

So yes, over time, everything becomes more fragile. And we’re not getting any younger either 🙂

Slightly off topic but in my experience once the original batteries die you better get used to having old macs plugged into power permanently. Replacements from Apple Store or aftermarket batteries deteriorate very quickly.

Just like the experience with my old Macs, they’re always plugged.

Particularly pleased with the front pocket depth and material on my new SD-100.

I thought the rear pockets might be larger in a sort of Edwin-esque fashion, and while they are certainly not small they aren't as oversized as I had expected. I think images make them look larger, that was the impression I'd previously had from the SD-101 anyway.

Somewhat of a long shot, but has anyone here tried Kotoka shoes out of Nara?

http://https://www.kotoka-store.jp/

I have my eye on either the Ichimaigawa (KTO-2002 ) or Ashinari (KTO-3001).

What I particularly like here - and the reason for interest - is their explanation of their lasts, in particular the oblique last.
Info about that here:

They don't appear to make a boot, but the shoes are right up my street.

Yes, the Ichimaigawa up to only 27.5 and the Ashinari up to only 28 I am afraid.
They do state that the fit is in the region of a half size larger but no good for you I am afraid.
Anyway, sent an e-mail asking about shipping. The inevitable sizing dilemma begins next :D
