hipsters of the world unite and take cover from jakarta's torrential rain. actually, the guy in the regulation thick-rimmed glasses is a friend of mine who owns the cafe. really nice guy.

obligatory (who's asking) selfie + a glimpse of my tezomeya tee just to make this post sufu-worthy (mullet no viz)

earlier at another place i ordered a latte and somehow got myself another cock-art

i hate taking photos. not much good at it. what i often do though is use the b612 selfie app to take semi-accidental photos of jakarta. since i have to face the screen of my iphone to the object the results are often blurry, outta focus, missing the object entirely. ART! here are some i took today especially for this tour:

early morn traffic

contrary to popular misguided opinion, indonesia is not a muslim country. it just has the largest muslim population in the world. this is a shot of one of jakarta's main mosques, al azhar, named after the og al azhar in cairo.

i like vending machines

teh botol, top centre, is indonesia's national drink. maybe like warm ale for the brits.

theme of the day is pipol. photos still taken sight unseen with the b612 app, on random filters.

spent all of today on jalan sabang, a street dead in the center of jakarta not far from where the sarinah blast/shootout happened in january, famous for its street eateries, oldskool tailors and photo studios claiming expertise in taking visa photos (usa 2x2, uk 3.5x4.5, etc) wherever in the world you wanna go.

as i said before, indonesia has the biggest muslim population in the world, but from around 7th century up until the 16th century sumatera and java were ruled by hindu-buddhist kingdoms. the biggest buddhist temple in the world, borobudur, which is like just an enormous artisan mandala, is in magelang in central java. and many smaller ruins and intact hindu and buddhist temples are scattered around it like diaper-butt jeans in an abandoned california mine. temples are still being found and excavated even today. the national museum has a lot of hindu-buddhist statues from the 7th century-16th century, one of them is this big nandi, one of the centrepieces installed in the museum's main yard. as shiva's ride nandi witnesses many things that shiva does, good and bad, including once nearly raping durga while flying on nandi's back (she can fly) and thus wasting his seed into the sea which later became batara kala, the great giant-god who was raised in the bottom of the sea by sea creatures and who later migrated to land to eat babies.

naked shiva. somebody get him some jawnz. maybe a straight cut with roomy top block to accommodate his huge thighs and man parts. big calves too. these duck diggers wouldn't fit him. maybe a 1000, or 700? rising sun yukon? he'd hate on the boring cone denim and then give it a 700 years distressed hardwash job with his cakra.

indonesia is not all hindu-buddha though. what is indonesia? old-hat anthropologists like ben anderson (rip) like to think it's just an "imagined community", in reality there are also more pragmatic political wheelings and dealings, economic power plays, ancient dekingdomization blablabla. but yeah, there are as many tribes and cultures in indonesia as there are unknown japanese brands. maybe we need a denim brand map like this indonesian tribes map.

random snaps from last few days.

nearing the end of me time with the duck diggers. will miss the cut so. not so fond of the shallow front pockets and the thick-ass selvedge fold and the denim is a bit too loud for my current taste, but the cut is both tres comfortable and flattering. nice job warehouse.

the gas man. if you remember my post about the jakarta shootout/bombing in january, these are the gas cans that the attackers used for their home-made bombs. you can buy the 3-kilo can everywhere.

Starting this leg (pun intended) of the tour with bucket handwash treatment.

(Ruedy might want to look away)

Washing agent of choice. "Natural" and "Earth" sounds pretty good to me.

Drying away...will update with fitpic & my impression of the fabric when it dries.
