Happy jeans: TCBxSufu S40s WW2 contest thread

Wore my 40s on a trip out to LA last week to pick up a new motorcycle n ride it back to Albuquerque, loosely documented on Polaroid film using this lil mamiya rb67.

Unfortunately the aperture slider seemed to have jammed somewhere along the way out and so most of these photos had way too much light for the camera to handle. Here are a handful that turned out okay:

In Brawley, California, somewhere I’ve always wanted to go (imperial county generally). About ten years ago I read the book Imperial by William T Vollman and it’s made a lasting impression on me, such a strange and magical and desperate part of the world. I only got to spend a couple of hours there as I was trying to get to tucson that afternoon, the below photos are from a quick cruise through salton city.

And a couple from penny’s diner in Yuma Arizona:

The rest of the trip after this point I was white-knuckling on the highway trying to stay upright as a massive snowstorm came in from western New Mexico and froze me solid and blew me back and forth all over the road for the last 200 miles home. got some minor frostbite on my fingers and knees but made it back in one piece lol. and the jeans have another story to tell! I’ll update w some pics of them soon. for now here’s a pic of the bike, 2000 kawasaki w650 :p

There will be some time limit, say two weeks, to submit photos before judging. Several of the Japanese contestants are on IG only, so I guess they will be submitting photos here.

@chicote Love that set! And glad you made it on that bike. I used to have a similar Honda but man that thing was not fun on the highways. I eventually moved on. Anyways, I've never heard an RB described as little and that's one of the most inconvenient and cumbersome ways to shoot polaroids but hats off to you! Did you put any proper negs through it as well?

Yeah, this is probably the last winter road trip I’ll take on a bike with no wind protection  My boss at work always brags to me about riding to new mexico from florida on a 400cc honda in the early 70s and i kinda had that in mind setting out on this trip, but people musta been tougher back then or something!

and you’re right, the rb filled up like 1/3 of my bag, lol, but it was fun to have something i needed to be so intentional about setting up. It came with a 120 back that needs new light seals but i am considering just shooting sx-70 on it forever; the big wide clear lens combined with the magic of that colour chemistry feels really special to me in the limited time ive used it so far.

Anyway, accept the compliment @bartlebyyphonics. I'd give the 'fit nos to you as a 1a and @CSL as a very close 1b for the contest. Love the looks!

@chicote I love a W650. A truer Triumph Bonneville repro than the Triumph Bonneville repro. I also commend you for cold weather rising US highways on an air cooled 650 twin. They're delightful to ride, but lack a little top end when you need it out there blasting the open roads here. 

 

And yes, below 45 on a naked motorcycle with no electric support is painful. I think your charging system can support Gerbing electric gloves and jacket liner. If so, that'll get you down the road in freezing temps just fine. 

 

Love the photos too! The southwest has been calling me back for a few years now and between you and CSL, this contest has only strengthened that call.

I named it crotch-ception. 
 

I obviously know nothing technical about sewing, and it shows. This is the last repair before the end of the contest, and tomorrow will be the last wash before the end of the contest. 
 

the crotch has always been the weak spot in all of my jeans, overall I think I fixed the crotch in these jeans more than 10 times. 
 

It’s been a pretty long contest and I can gladly say that I managed to wear these jeans for more than 80% of it, and as long as my underwear remain invisible on the inside of the jeans, I will keep on wearing them! (:

Last week I demolished an old bridge in a park with a pond and built a new one.

A new hand-carved bridge girder.

I painted it.

I wash this pair and this contest is over.

Enjoyed a lovely trip to La Paz, BCS last week. It's a small town on the Sea of Cortez. It's quaint with busted streets, a nasty industrial section, a gorgeous malecon, some small stretches of beach, beautiful sunsets, wonderful people and some damn good vegetarian friendly food. We did an off-road tour out to the dunes for some less than successful sand boarding and super fun dune carving. We've both been riding motorcycles for years, but only ever on pavement. Neither of us have ridden quads before. Acclimating to the back end washing around in the soft sand took a minute, but once we got used to the handling, our guide Enrique ramped up the speed and it was a blast.

I for one am ready for the contest to come to a close. I am fortunate that these last 18 months included some beautiful motorcycling, family reuniting, two gorgeous trips to two very different parts of Mexico and the general rising tide of New York's reawakening. It's also been a difficult 18 months for everyone surviving the ongoing stresses of Covid and the varying restrictions, disruptions, anxieties and losses we've suffered. Unrelated to Covid, I also put to rest my cat of 18 years (Dimitri who landed a book cover during the '50s contest) and just this past month lost my grandmother at 94 years.

The joy of sharing these contests for me is journey we're on throughout them. The results of this contest are so beautiful from so many. I'm happy to have shared it with you all. There aren't very many people out there who can begin to understand what we're even doing on this forum obsessing over jeans and competing for whose look best after 18 months of wear. Thank you to @volvo240thebest and TCB for hosting it and thank you to everyone participating. What a trip.

Got a proper one, too!

Overall, the tiles are level, but I f*ed up the self levelling screed layer and now have tricky areas. In addition, some of the tiles seem to have thicker edges - so there is some lippage going on.

But my assistants keep telling me they don’t mind…
