Denim Blunders, Reflections and General Nonsense.

There won’t be too many foreign guests in Odesa this summer, what with the war and all. Maybe ten or fifteen—drifters out of time and place, drawn by their fondness for Ukrainian girls and blissfully deaf to the loud, unsettling noises of missiles and drones.

@Double 0 Soul@ATWM as much as I enjoy thrashing denim and seeing how they evolve. It’s getting so expensive. Might have to go back to my budget work jeans the wrangler 13MWZ. For $30 they’re tough as nails and actually fade quite well.

See, internet is pretty cool^

i think we are the same age @Double 0 Soul so my internet life started probably in 2001. First just emails.

i was surprised to see how people spiced up their life’s on MySpace .

in real life “normal” online super intellectual , underground movies and music. And to top it off camp was the rage. Played all fields.

decided I was not gonna play.
so mostly (window) shopping some tumblr. Discovers fora in 2007 ish, being not good with letters I was intimidated by it, but joined DB 2009 or so.

nowadays instagram it’s, fun , horrible, informative , bad advice. Brain dead past time.

Maybe Donny should lead by example and give Texas to the Mexicans?

Or, if he’s that keen on soothing his dear friend Vladimir, returning Alaska might be a lovely place to start.

@Talan I’ve seen you mention your situation a few times here now and I just wanted to say I’m sorry for the insanity your country is going through. This is a nonsense thread, and that indeed is nonsense. Unfortunately I’ve heard a few firsthand accounts of things since this all started from some Ukrainian friends and just…yeah. It’s hope it ends soon and that you stay safe.

@Double 0 Soul I think the reason this forum has stayed sane, in part, is the no politics policy (hopefully acknowledgement of being in a war and it sucking is not considered as such) - and people coming together around a common interest. 4 Chan, at least from what I understand, is quite a different beast.

I think my household was a relatively early adopted of the internet. Probably logged on in 1995 or so for games then - I went through all of the shit, starting on AOL Instant Messenger. Yes MySpace and early Facebook. There used to be a sense of wonder and discovery and a lot humor and just amazing weirdness. Tumblr was sort of the beginning of the end in my personal recollection.

The commercialization of everything did indeed make all the good stuff much harder to find. Like a funky town with good affordability might have a ton of strange shops and co-ops but then it gets killed when too a critical mass of people become interested.

Though I had started earlier, I really learned photography on a forum called skateboardphotography.com in 2004 or so - it was run by a German dude and was a pretty tight ship with scathing critiques and a real attitude of wanting to improve amongst the posters. Some skilled photographers were on there and shared their industry experience working for mags like Thrasher and Transworld. It launched a few solid careers in photography. I learned more on that forum - with regards to the craft of photography - than I did in university or in graduate school for art - and mostly because the critical culture was very tough but very fair and with a common goal. Defensiveness would essentially get you bounced. You could disagree, but you’d have to show why in your work to make the argument. It’s amazing how gentle the critiques have to be in institutions now. That’s a side rant, but yeah.

There were a lot of good threads on technical topics with film, processing, lighting and all of it (before digital was very good). All member generated and highly relevant. We had to pay a subscription fee of like $25 or something, which felt like a big ask for a bunch of grimey broke skaters. I remember after just about a year the founder just took the site offline with no warning and ran off with a bunch of new subscriber’s fees. Another forum followed it but it was nowhere near as good and the community was too big and chaotic. Since then I’ve made it a point to make sure anything I really care about online is something I am hosting myself.

@shredwin_206 yea - similarly if I were in your shoes I’d probably be in Carhartts or Dickies etc. (I can’t pull off Wranglers)

I always find it a bit puzzling when war is called politics — just an observation. To me, they seem like very different things. But anyway, I guess it’s hard to understand from the outside.

And, I’m doing well, thank you.

I do too, but, well, things get pulled in weird directions sometimes. It’s probably a damning sign of the times I guess that I even felt the need to qualify that. But glad you’re well.

It's more similar than you give it credit for.. :D .. from memory, the guy who established 4Chan (moot) used to post on Something Awful.. there was some internet beef over furry culture spreading over numerous threads, he was banned, he set up 4Chan where furries could chat without oppression.. (akin to Denimbro :D ) other threads popped up loosly based around anime.. and eventually a stickies page.

image.png.9ae86c44588d89deed4b6ee3d460ccbb.png

.. all quite harmless.. but because folks posted anon, and nothing was archived folks could say what the hell they wanted so the early days it had a strong libertarian lean.. but with this backdrop it really was the wild west.. a breading groud for hackers, meme culture.. the birth of the modern interwebz.

Eventually the forum was split into blue screen SFW or pink screen NSFW which i'm not going to post (sufu also had similar NSFW threads in this era) so as not to deter advertising revenue.

.. the /pol thread was only set up to keep politics out of the other threads but it became a breeding ground for the worst of human nature.. it singlehandedly birthed the alt-right.. moot quit after GamerGate, a million terrible, terrible things happened, on the flip a million good things happened which we hear less about, it's like trying to sum up human nature in a paragraph.. i still think the bad far outweighs the good but that doesn't mean the good didn't happen.. but for a casual observer like me.. absolutely fascinating!

A bunch of Soyjacks who were banned from 4Chan hacked the forum, exposed the sourcecode and the mods personal deets and logs.. incredible drama!..  i'm not sad that 4Chan is gone.. i'm just sad at what the internet has become and these links to the old web are gradually being erased.

Wasn't there also an 8chan or so?
Sure, I could google it (like some people nowaday reply when you ask them something), but I prefer your insight on it :D

Japan had a 2Chan message board.. then 4Chan^ mentioned above (i think the difference was 2Chan was txt based, 4Chan was image).. then a bunch of 4Chan users got banned for discussing the very worst crimes / against 4Chan policy.. so 8Chan was established (hosted i think in the Philippines) so these dregs of society could discuss.

So I am pretty much busy transcending.

I'm in the market for some swim wear for an upcoming trip and came across these from Mister Freedom.

I can only imagine the looks I would get rocking these bad boys poolside, but the swim fades could be extraordinary. Right!?

Hahaha, no I think they're as uncomfortable as they look. You're right though, the fit has a striking resemblance to a Depends Adult Diaper.

I'll check it out.. not much really Edwin, unless i go 'artisan' i've worked my way through the range of 'off the shelf' nut butters.. i need to get TG on the proxy phone!

I tried 'ManLife' on maynards recommendation.. the consistancy was way too runny for my liking, might have been a bad batch, there was a lot of surface oil which is usually a good sign but once i'd mixed it in, i scooped some out of the jar on the knife and it ran off the knife onto the chopping board.. just thick liquid, when i was eating it, it was sliding off the bread onto the plate (damn you maynard, insert shakey fist emoji) tasted great tho!

I made bacon and maple syrup on a lightly toasted hotcross bun for Easter..
