Ah interesting. Thanks for the info. They seem hardly worn though and we're pretty cheap so thought I'd give them a shot. Hopefully they still fade similar to other 47s I've seen in here...might need to hem though

I’m not certain but I think it isn’t Cone and is from Orta Mills in Turkey

@bod must be 10 years now. I've worn them on and off as I always have too many jeans though. I dread to think how much LVC stuff I have bought and sold over the years!

sorry for the late response the denim is not cone mills it the current stuff LVC have i think it's made in Bulgaria. quality is good but not better than my cone mills. the jacket is regular line levis.

They are none of those 3 models, which are all LVC reproductions based on approximate interpretations of models extant at that time. If your question relates to which current LVC repro model they most closely resemble/align to then it is clearly not the 47s as the pair Nicholson is wearing has a paper patch.

The film was released in 1975 and set in 1963. In that instance, Nicholson could be wearing a contemporary (ie mid-1970s) pair of Levi’s. If however, the costume department were aiming for something period correct, they should more closely align to an early 60s pair, which in current LVC terms would be most similar to the 55 model. I can’t quite tell whether they have hidden rivets or not but I think they do.

I was also thinking if it's set in 63 then a 55 cut would make sense but they look quite trim and I thought it could be a paper patch seeing how light coloured it was so a 60s-70s seems more likely but I wasn't 100%. Great looking pair of faded jeans though and the whole outfit really is perfect.

Whether they’re trim or not is largely irrelevant and dependent on the physique of the wearer and whether they size correctly, up or down. From what I’ve read on the subject and according to experts such as @Paul T, LVC exaggerated some aspects of the cut in their models in order to differentiate them enough (and thereby justify them and possibly encourage us punters to buy multiple pairs).

I love those jeans and instinctively have always thought they were early 60s. 

LVC's cuts are indeed traditionally kind of stylised. Remember, pattern cutting is not a precise art, shapes will vary between sizes and some aspects, ie back pocket shapes, varied between factories so they are hitting a moving target. However, although some cuts are exaggerated (ie 201) their take on the different patterns has generally become a consensus, although quite a few brands tend to have a higher rise for their 60s models. 

@Maynard, I was interested by your post sayig the Turkish-made jeans used Orta Mills. Where did you hear that? I do remember enquiring, and hearing they weren't Cone, but I had the vague idea they were Italian denim (Candiani?) - but have probably mis-remembered. Did I say they were Orta?

You didn’t say that Paul but I know the jeans were made in Turkey and there are plenty of Internet references of Levi’s and Orta being partners so I put 2+2 together and said I think the fabric is from Orta and not Cone. Of course, my maths could be wrong and the denim could be from elsewhere but from a logistics perspective it would make sense.

Ah, I found a reference from page 80 here: from 2006 until at least 2009 the Turkish washed 501 used Italian denim, which I am pretty sure was Candiani, which they claimed was due to Nafta or something. They may well have used Orta afterwards because, as you've stated correctly, Levi's and Orta have partnered on quite a few projects.

My old LVC 1947 555 501's from the 90's worn and repaired multiple times. They were my first pair of LVC denim so trying to keep them repaired and in service.

I'll be honest, the discernible lack of flare makes those just about the best bootcuts I've seen for my tastes - or the closest to anything I'd ever consider personally. I mean, just the term bootcut feels like an allergic trigger for me.

But these are Bob's. No one's gonna be Bob.
