1946-47 506XX around 2.5 years wear and 1922 506XX at just under 1.5 years (but also less abused and no machine wash)

A testament to how good their denim is...Super vintagey 🙏

I always wondered this about chainstitch history — people talk about chainstitching not existing (in the denim world) until the late 1930s, yet chainstitch machines, of both single- and double- needle varieties, have been produced since the 1850s. Union Special first produced the 43200G in 1939, but it had other industrial chainstitch machines in the 1920s, and perhaps it or other brands did even earlier. So if the technology existed almost 100 years prior, why did people only start hemming with chainstitches in the mid 20th century? And why use such an inefficient (from a thread-use perspective) stitch in the middle of WWII rationing?

In all fairness, for hemming you simply cut the inseam to the desired/needed length and sew it. Nobody is going to unpick the old hem first (unless of course you only need 0.5 cm shorter. Then one might unravel the old stitching, unfold the hem and cut a little bit).

I don’t have the time or patience to send my jeans off to be hemmed with a chainstitch. My mom is able to hem and just use a single needle stitch and that works for me. All I care about is the right length. It all fades and gets abused the same by me. Ha

Some guys are into puckering on the yoke. I like the roping in the hem. Different strokes for different folks

Guys!

Anyone who used FW 601xx 1951 "one wash" can recall, how many centimeters the waist is stretched after using the pair for 10 or 20 days?

a shop shared the waist in size 34 is 86cm wide (43 x 3 = 86), I am targeting for 92 or 93cm wide after use. Whetehr FW 601XX 1951 will stretch 5 cm or more? if yes, the pair is having correct waist width for my size.

I used one wash in Sugar Cane SC41470 , Momotaro 0105sp streteched 5 cm more and Fullcounts 1108 and 1109 in one wash stretched around 6cm more, making waist width from 86 or 87cm to 91 or 92cm.

Please advise.

This isn't much help - I don't take before or after measurements usually, I just take note if something fits. (I take measurements before I buy, but after that I just put it on).

Anyways, I recall the FW one wash '51's stretching a bit in the waist and more or less staying that way. They've never been as tight as they were the first few days I wore them, even after many subsequent washes - or if they are it's only for an hour or so. I wear a size 30, and their 30 is pretty middle of the road against other brands. But, snug as they were, they still buttoned up just fine without any contorting.

All of that said, I wouldn't personally buy any jeans with a waist short of my intended use, not 3 cm, definitely 5 or 6 cm - and I didn't with my '51s. I bought them at the exact waist size I wanted to wear them at.

Is there any reason you cant just buy a size up, or the correct tag size with your desired waist?

my actual waist is 91.5 cm or 36inches wide (using flat method).

FW 601xx 1951 size 36 one wash is 90 or 91cm already, as with wear the pair's waist will increase so it will become too loose (if the pair becomes 94 or 96, it will be too loose).

I bought 36inches / 91.5cm wide OA Yofukaten OA01XX size 36 which got shrunk first and later become 91cm again after use, also WH 1001xx size 34 was 94cm in Raw state after wash shrunk but with use stretchd back to 94cm.

Here is a one wash photo measurement of the 51 in size 34. I was told...'Waist area is also shrunk about 1cm after washing by yourself but the waist will stretch after wearing many times' - Seiichiro at Hoosiers

Measure your jeans like this and compare.

Then probably just end up buying a size 36 and living with the fact that they are tighter after a wash, and a tiny bit looser when worn a while.

Larger jeans won't stretch as much in the waist most of the time because they're not getting the pressure to stretch. I really doubt your size 36 will stretch to 96 cm if your waist itself isn't that big unless you try to wear it lower or put a lot of pressure on the waistband otherwise. I've never had a pair stretch to being whole size too big in the waist. That said, my OA's in size 31 are definitely a little more snug in the waist than my FW in size 30. At this point this is after a lot of wear and multiple washes and even drying for both.

In my opinion, new jeans should be a little snug, but not so snug that you can't button them when new. Do you want this pair because the shop only carries a waist 34? If they have a 36, I think you should try that first.

I’ve already responded when asked this question by DM, but to buy an actual 34 waist denim to fit an actual 36 waist is a complete nonsense by my reckoning.

While it is possible the waistband could stretch by nearly 2 inches, the rest of the fit does not, and neither will threads, buttonholes etc.

Beyond that, the waist of a human can expand nearly two inches more on any given time of day (food, food waste and the digestive process).

My 33W are now nearly 35W … my actual waist is (was) 33

I also replied to this query via DM too.

Not sure if I've ever seen someone so fixated on a specific waist measurement before...
Jeans aren't ever going to fit "perfectly" down to the precise mm, embrace a little variability.
I don't own the '51s, but all my FW are size 36 and all of them end up a tad loose in the waist after some wear. That's what belts and cinches are for.

If you want something made to measure go have some bespoke trousers made.

I hate loose waist/diaper butt. So I’ve always gone slight stretch to fit.
going tts gave terrible diaper effect.

So we’ve got a handful of DMs and a couple of public posts from the same person asking the same question?

A question that seems to have been answered in more or less the same way each time?

@dada mafiosi are you just trying to find someone who will agree with your approach to give you comfort in your decision making?

If you have a method you’re happy with then there’s no need for all the fuss - just buy the small size and stretch the fuck out of them.

The only thing we ask is you share fit pics please …

That’s got as much to do with the cut of the jeans and the size of your arse as it has to do with waist size 😂

I got the 51s in 33 1.5 years ago when I was still looking for slimmer fits.
They fit me fine everywhere except for the hips (waist stretched enough to be fine). So kind of "stress whiskers".
The 34 would probably fit me very well everywhere. But since I'm now into more comfortable wider fits I got them in 36.
And they fit very well with a belt.
No matter, how much research there will always be an element of trial and error.
