i started having terrible insomnia since the pandemic began (still in self-imposed lockdown here in jakarta, and still no jabs). tried every cure from a dram or two (or three...) of whisky for a nightcap to those rain on a lake youtube vids, no go. this seemed to work for a while:

I used to have terrible insomnia Ooms from the age of 19ish to 30odd, friends would joke... well stop taking this and that, but it wasn't a laughing matter! it was fucking awful, i used to get borderline ocd with it... i'd convinced myself that numerous ridiculous criteria had to be met before i could nod off. Luckily for me i could just go to work at 3am... My kid being born broke the cycle, i still don't sleep well now (i can't drink tea or coffee after 2pm) but i'm not starring at cracks on the ceiling for 3hrs every flipping night.

Anyhow..

Great stuff in there. I grew up listening to Krautrock and earlier (albeit not the earliest) synth/experimental bands in the late 70’s, and spent many listening hours catching up on those bands earlier releases.

From my perspective I would have said the Robotnick track was more ‘Kraftwerk’ in its approach - YMO were greatly impressed by Kraftwerk, but more to ensure not sounding like them. 

Anyway I think Martin has already posted ‘deeper than Penthouse & Pavements’ with Being Boiled but you could include Cabaret Voltaire in your Sheffield list

 

 

But here’s some Krautrock - it’s not primarily synth but they seemed to have been a great influence to the later synth bands

& of course, all hail to Neu! and to the Japanese return to cosmic krautrock / prolonged psych ...

another aside... saw these guys doing this psych. score for legend of the overfiend back in the day... best was the nonchalant posturing of their keyboardist cotton casino wearing a tracksuit in the midst frantic victoriana-hippy-simulations...

Morning super-peeps, can someone offer some friendly advice to this analogue dinosaur.

 

Currently i have 1000's of CD's in cases up in my folks attic, there's also a few bits of Hi-Fi equipment too, i moved it all up there when my kid was young, it was on a homemade rack on the floor in our old house, i couldn't move it out of his way when he was a toddler because the living space was in the apex of the roof, exposed beams and such with no shelves, we had a bookcase but he used to climb up that...

 

 I transferred 100's of CD's onto an old ipod-video so i could move it all out of his way, stuck the hi-fi in my folks attic for the foreseeable, during this time he knocked over a glass of cherry juice onto my old macbook while we were having a pillow/cushion fight destroying the motherboard so the ipod-video is synced to the old macbook so if i sync/update it to the new macbook i'll lose it all.. Ive got the HD in a transport but it's a mess picking through it..

 

Ive never used the itunes store so all of the music on the current macbook (no disk drive) is there from converting youtube to mp3 and making playlists/mixtapes, i transfer this onto a shuffle and play via Bose sounddock but the quality is somewhat rattly and bass heavy with no scope for adjustment. Now my kid has done with shoving his fingers in everything I'm considering re-introducing the hi-fi but i don't really want 1000's of cd's on display.. sadly i sold the speakers so while ive been searching for replacement speakers, ive spotted higher end wireless speakers so i'm considering splashing out on a pair of those instead and leaving the CD's in the attic.

 

The speakers work from either 'Apple AirPlay2, Siri, Spotify Connect, Tidal, Nas Drive, DLNA, Cloud or Bluetooth with Qualcomm apt' ??? Bluetooth aside, I haven't got a fucking clue how any of these things work, if i start reading up i'll fly off on some tangent as per usual and in a few weeks time i'll know every stupid detail and i'll end up spending more £££

I haven't got the time or inclination for either so can somebody just explain to me in the simplest of terms how one would play music from i-tunes via any of the above platforms?

Neal, it’s easy to stream via Apple Play or Bluetooth - both use simple wireless connectivity, just pair your MacBook to the compatible speaker and you’re good to go. Probably a stupid question but does your Bose sound dock have a  USB connection so you could just plug your MacBook straight in?

Regarding your old iPod, you’ve probably Googled it already but there is a way of transferring the music on that to your Mac’s iTunes, I did it with mine years ago when my Old PowerBook was stolen in a burglary and I got a replacement via insurance. Obviously the difference is that you want to keep what’s already there so if that method overwrites the music in your Mac’s iTunes, you might have to move your existing library to a hard drive, reimport the music from your old iPod and then add the stuff back from the hard drive. Hopefully that makes sense!

Double o, I,m/was more or less in the same situation. We bought Harman Kardon Bluetooth WiFi speakers. I like the sound of it. But I don,t care to much for sound, as long I can recognize the song.

you need to upload a google home app on your device you want to use for playing music. We have 2 speakers and most the time it only wants to play just one and doesn’t,t connect the other. Sometimes none.

i also don,t want to move back my load of cd,s so I guess I,m one for now.

I play music now that I never bought before , so that,s a plus

I don't think so Martin, It's the Bose Sounddock II but it's years since ive really looked at it.. even so the sound quality is only ok at low volume, crank it up and it's all kinds of bass distortion.

Yep, i just need to motivate myself to sort that out, i still use the i-pod video in that Montana cardboard Boom-Box, although the battery life sucks!

The main thing i'm trying to avoid is controlling the wireless speakers via a phone app, i want to do it all on the macbook without any loss of performance, subscribing or having to pay for anything.
