X-post from repairs thread,

So a couple weeks ago I bought this pretty f***ed up 1940's type 1 jacket from Spitalfields Market in London which fit me perfectly being a size 42 as a bit of a 'restoration project'.The price was right but i knew restoration can be a sensitive subject amongst collectors, infact people i asked gave me mixed opinions on whether or not to go ahead with this!

I happend to have some old early 60's fabric from some 501 cut offs that had a similar fade to the jacket so I knew I could get it pretty close... after buying a pair of early 50's XX cutoffs for 15 dollars on ebay for its single sided big E red tab and period correct top button, I took it to my local tailor with another type 1 I have as a referance and here are the results! I must stress before everyone gets mad at me that this is completely reversible!! Only regret (so far) is is that I sacrificed the correct thread colour to have the correct thread weight/thickness instead.

You did just what a rancher / farmer ... 1930/40s 506xx wearer would have done if his jacket had been damaged . I see no problem with it .

Picked up this original 1962 Levis 559XX the other week from greedbay. Not bad condition for a jacket that is 60 years old this year!

'Every garment guaranteed' tag dates it to between 1962-64 -

But the button backs (stamped #17) and the shirt-weight denim on the inside of the pocket flaps date it to 1962, as these are the last remenants of the type 2 (507XX) -

Years ago, I used to hear plenty of claims from various dealers and collectors alike, that the 507xx and 557xx were in simultaneous production for a few years. Whether this is true or not I cant be sure, but only speculate.

[edit - put wrong photo in - now corrected!)

Some more details I like are the 'finishing off' of the thread, similar to all Levis jeans and jackets made before the early sixties -

and a little oxidization on the real copper buttons -

The fit is a little on the large side, so only time will tell weather it's a keeper -

just had the winning bid on this daft big E bag.

i look forward to strolling down the street with my levis jacket, levis jeans, levis shirt and levis bag...

Good score killer b, and and much prefer the original.

Bought one of those for my ex-wife, although I'm sure it's a unisex accessory

You can get a four-pack of tinnies in there btw :D

Come on, that's a girls' bag! Give it to your wife or daughter or even swap it with your gran's tartan shopping trolley!

Makes a good impromptu hat as well.

Trust me, I tried it.

If I do decide to let it go, I'll give you first dibs. I'm forever upgrading/re-shuffling..etc.

that's very kind of you Dr. but to be honest and i'm telling you this as a friend; i would keep it, i think it fits you very well. i had a 7505 lvc jacket in 48 that i really liked the looks of, but i had to get rid of it because it looked so oversized on me and of course would not shrink. i see none of that going on here i think it gives you a nice looking fit. if you get rid of it you may not be so lucky in the future with regard to fit on this style of jacket. and of course it's condition and still having the troy mills tag is a big plus. great find.

Well said colgems.

...and let's face it Charlie, none of us are getting any younger, just more content - I'm sure you'll be filling it out nicely in a couple of years time :)

It's a good fit any it's 50 years old. Keep I say.

many times that style strikes me as being too long in the body. that perspective comes from owning a lot of vintage jackets which are usually cut shorter than more modern styles. i've seen it plague the type 3 jacket often and it was the main cause of me selling my lvc type 3. this one seems to be the correct length. looking at the photo it fits well in the length, shoulder and sleeves. that plus condition i would keep it. i'd say you got a winner there Dr.

I dont doubt this claim actually, something to note and particularly with your jacket is that it has the 'every garment guaranteed' on the patch, i believe it was circa 1962 when that went. The funny thing is that Its only blanket lined type III jackets (559 XX) that have this as far as I am aware! ***edit*** Maybe the blanket lined ones where released before the normal ones?***

I didn't know that about the '17' stamp either, i always assumed it was only a 507 thing and from what i have personally seen very early XX type III's have a 'D' stamp moving on to '0' and then 554/556 etc. So your '17' stamp is proof of the 'simultaneous production'.

Funny thing is I was just offered a really early 60's 557 XX yesterday with 'D' stamp for £60 but passed on it! These jackets don't get the love they deserve imo!

The bag....another thing women have absconded from men over the years. What did women need a bag for 300 years ago when they never left the house, didn't have money and didn't wear makeup?

(Disclaimer - this post is intended to be purely sarcasm, people who take it literally and overreact need to get a life).
