This vintage Lee denim jacket is looking great on you, and circle R only so about 1968?

Yep the label has the Circle R only but not the M.R. which would date it around 1966-1967. With the M.R. It would be around 1968-1971

The jacket is great and stiff as raw (it‘s one washed/rinsed). The denim is pretty hairy:

I guess it‘ll be more hairy after washing or soaking. I'm thinking about cold soaking the jacket anyway since it's so stiff.
What surprises me, however, is the way the pockets are finished inside:

Or was it done that way in 1962? 😉

Anyway, fantastic jacket and besides that perfectly made. I love it!

Should I soak my one-wash Sugar Cane 1962 jacket? The jacket is extremely stiff, and I think it will shrink a little—it's better if it's at its final size before wearing it in. However, I want to avoid the indigo bleed-through from the soak to the inside of the jacket, which could turn it blue. What do you think?

I think you are in danger of overthinking things (I wouldn't worry about it bleeding through for example). If the fit is good just wear it and it'll break-in, even if it's a bit stiff at first. A soak will still leave it feeling stiff. If you need extra shrinkage for best fit beyond the one wash dimensions then try a machine wash to start with.

I hate to say it, but it seems you’re wanting to control denim more than it can be controlled.

Wash it now, you may get shrink, things might bleed a little, which is unavoidable whenever you wash, and your jacket will be ever so slightly lighter to begin the fading. And eventually, when you wash it again at some point, it will probably shrink just a little bit more. It might not, but it might. And you just have to live with it. It may stretch out again some too. Or you could wash it again a second time right now on a hot cycle to try to avoid this, but you’d lose more indigo, and you still might not avoid it completely. Denim is best thought of as a little bit of a living entity.

If you like the fit now I would just get on with wearing it. That’s the best way to sort out the stiffness.

^Of course, wabi sabi for the win.

However, I‘ve soaked the jacket cuz it was simply too stiff for my liking. Turned out nice: no bleeding-in, no unwanted crinkles  and it shrunk 2-3% (What I had taken into account when choosing the size). The jacket‘s still drying but I can tell it feels softer- fine!

^ you‘re both right 🙂

But don't we all want the ultimate result?

It’s about the journey not the destination

I think that was smart. I waited maybe a year of wear before I gave my 1955 jacket its first wash and it never softened up before I washed it.

That was my fear too, and I didn't want to wear a more or less uncomfortable jacket for months, with fades that no longer fit properly after the first wash.

I have seen this inside pocket finish on some older Levis trucker as well.

And enjoy your great looking jacket💪💪
