Levi's Vintage Clothing

What cake? You're deciding between two pairs of 1940's repros, which will have a slightly high rise, the 44's more so than the 47's.

.

13" and 16" after a soak? My 501s measure 11" and 15", which is why I made that comment that yours "took the cake" for higher rise. I know the two are very similar. I just want to figure out exactly what I'm getting before I drop more than $50 dollars on a pair of jeans for the first time.

After talking to a couple other people via PM, I decided on the 44's in 30x32. I should have them soaked by this weekend, and I'll post fit pics when I do.

44 owners, how durable are the painted arcuates?

When you see an earlier 557xx/70505 which is that faded, the obvious tell tale sign that it's not an original is the fact that the label would have been cracked, or worse, missing entirely, as the earlier card stock on Levis jeans and jackets wasn't washing machine friendly.

.

yeah, im wearing an original right now and its a hell of alot darker and the patch is long gone. so is a bunch of stitching... damn cotton thread.

also, on originals, the red tab will be curled up.

Doc, you're right, the newness of the label should have tipped me off right away.

HH, I believe the 557 had a large label like this up until the late '60s, then had two variations of a smaller label until the small "e" came around.

and is the card label that big on originals? My type 3's are a lot smaller than that. That looks like a jean label put on a jacket?

Happy

The neck patches on Levis jackets were originally leather 501 patches (see photos of original 506xx's and early 507xx's- the card stock variant being introduced around 1955)

This tradition continued on the 557xx, which had a 3" x 2" (approx) size neck patch, but only from betwwen 1962-68.

Then it was changed to the smaller, more widely known variety, in the thinner, more flimsy type card.

[edit] ..beaten to it !

About $220. That's pretty much everywhere.

'47 owners: just want to verify one thing:

LVC '47s are still 1" smaller than tagged waist, right? And they shrink an additional inch with hot soak?

What's the logic to that? Should I expect that these will stretch 2" back to the tagged size?

dr... its a "great resource" for those of us who dont have access to a early japanese denim mag that came out in 1996.

Cheep,

Sorry if you misunderstood me, I wasn't being sarcastic or knocking the site. I also used this resource for all the great info on denim jackets ( ..for many years before I got hold of that magazine).

I was just explaining where the info had originally come from.

(ps. Love that $40,000 jacket )

No. Current generation are not undersized. Check with your retailer. I think they're true to size now, in whcih case I would suggest sizing up by one inch, not two.

Did anyone else notice that they're using the photos of the 44s for the 47s?

I was advised by Paul T on another forum to buy true to measured size. Farinelli's has the measurements posted, so go off those.

I did notice that. Surpised that Mauro let that slip. Might cause some confusion.

Many thanks on the sizing advice everyone. I picked up a pair with an '07 made-date on the Supermarket, so wasn't sure.

Only had quickest look and on my way out the door for a curry but... I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. Don't know any Leiv's with open selvage like that .

Is there a resource online for the different LVC denim that is modeled off of items in their archives, like the guts for garters or saddleman. I just picked up a pair and am interested in what else is out there.

Thanks

this was posted only two above you....

Unfortunately no, Levis is pretty digital media unfriendly. They say that all of their distressed models, denim and otherwise, are based directly on actual archival items, but they don't take advantage of that by posting images of the original items, or even a comprehensive selection of each seasons repros, to the web.

You can see most of this seasons distressed denim models here: http://www.hanon-shop.com/levi-vintage/

I think they are missing a real opportunity to grow their fan base here, but that's the route they've chosen.

If you wanted to see how accurate some of their repors are, a couple of items that I know they've reproduced that have good documentation online for the original garments are: the Nevada jeans, and (recently) the 1874 Hunting Jacket.

Nevada jeans:

Those are the different cuts. I am looking for information on the different washes of the 501s. Such as the "Guts for Garters" and "Saddleman".

Look through here. There is a LVC book which came with jeans over the 2009 season - Airfrog has posted photos I believe It depicts around 9 pairs of originals, most of which were used as the basis for distressed versions. Or look back through here at the denim tech models.

AS far as a complete archive of one next to the other - when you've searched and found them, maybe you could start one here, or add them to the LVC Visual GUide thread?

I saw this preaged 66 and to me they look great (not that big fan of pretreated jeans anymore, but this pair rocks imo):

THanks for posting. They do look errific. Here are some amazing distressed jeans on the way that have been done at Denim Tech but I fear some of them will be expensive. I was hearing amazing stories of what they got up to on the recent reissues like Barnyard.

The LVC catatlog thread might not be exactly what you are looking for, but it might be of interest:

I'm not a prewash hater. There are some really nice pretreated jeans, especially from LVC: good art- and kraftwork, even if they won't be unique like a self worn in dry pair. I've got a pair of 54's rootless which are simply beautiful:

...and this 66 LVC is also pretty tempting
