Denim Blunders, Reflections and General Nonsense.

I've always liked the look of SDA's jeans, but they're one of the brands with cuts that just absolutely seem like they wouldn't work for me. Hopefully you have better luck!

My Warehouse 800xx and 1001xx are the best fitting pairs I've found, for my very western body shape (tall and slim.) The Buzz Rickson 1930s chinos fit even better, and the Sugar Cane 1955 look like they have a similar fit based on posted measurements. So any of those might be worth a look. Big problem with Warehouse is the short inseam, but I was fortunate to get the Self Edge versions that are longer.

Thanks mate.  Usual mix of excitement and worry :D

I've tried two new (to me) pairs recently;

- the Kapital Monkey Cisco - awful fit and something totally wrong with the geometry or proportions between me and the jeans, and

- the Samurai S510HX vintage '47 model - which were absolutely excellent, and very nearly exactly what I wanted bar that I needed a larger size. Samurai, at least, are one of those few brands offering a size 35 which I was tempted to try again with until I saw a pic of a guy wearing a size 36 which gave me sufficient doubt not to bother with either

So.  We'll see.

Incidentally re chino's.

Calee Westpoint slim.

Outstanding. Like a far better Dickies sort of thing. I have two pairs from their 2020 season, I think - ref is CL-20AW012.

Easily fits into that recent topic about buying the same thing twice.  Would buy again in a heart beat.

Is SOAS any good? Recently visited London, and by chance walked down the street that SOAS resides on. Dude out front was kinda rude, everything was overpriced and I was immediately told under no circumstances may I take photos. Was weird because I didn't have a camera and my phone was in my pocket and I had no intentions of taking photos inside a store. Very confusing shop experience and I promptly left and visited SCRT/Nudies down the way.

That sounds horrible..

Any good? .. i dunno, good at what? they're just selling overpriced jeans to clueless Londeners with too much money, it's like shooting fish in a barrel :D

I've used their hemming service numerous times and it's acceptable for £20 .. (i think R&H charge £30) our options are fairly limited over here.

I don't shop at these kind of places.. i walked right past R&H a few weeks ago.. i just don't see the point in going in to look at jeans which cost 50% less in Japan.

Uniqlo are offering a chainstitching service for £3.00

..fuck soas!

I had a friend here in Odessa who owned a professional sewing machine and would hem some of my pairs with a chain stitch for a symbolic fee. The stitch looked good, but the problem was that the rope effect was missing. In the case of Uniqlo, it’s probably not a fact that they use a Union Special or something similar, right? Besides, it’s stated that this is only for online orders, so they wouldn’t accept a private order from someone with an item purchased elsewhere, would they?

I should’ve mentioned.. you have to buy Uniqlo’s 30% elastane, slim fit, distressed selvedge to qualify ..

Additional plus, their threads are strong — pure nylon.

Physically trying them on is the only point I can reasonably see. Even then that doesn't justify the markup, so I'd never buy locally and just proxy what I can. 2025 will be interesting with brands like Samurai doing all they can to limit that, hoping to leave us with the only option of paying more.

It's nice to have a new option & not have to be limited to 'mammal-toe'.

I must admit the first time I went there I was far from impressed with the attitude from the staff.

However , they have redeemed themselves since! Rudys a genuinely nice personas as is Linda, not to mention @Mr Black banging out top notch hem jobs.

I had some QC issues with a pair of paraboot I got from there and they couldn't do enough to help get it sorted & Rudy hemmed a pair of warehouse for me while we sat and chatted and put the world to right...

It's Eye wateringly expensive but run by good people.

I also had bought a pair of shoes from them, that had some issues and they were very helpful in exchanging that pair.
That should be standard practice, but unfortunately isn't these days as I had to learn a few times in the past two years.

drew keith from temple of jawnz (user dismalfuture on here). ripped off way more people on styleforum than sufu, think it ended up hitting six figures. also opened a restaurant in korea with some people and fleeced them, too. ironically i actually had a good experience buying from him, but obviously he was a scumbag to many.

Do we have a rogues gallery thread?

  • Masterson
  • White Horse Ranch

Maine Mountain Moccasin Company also screwed a bunch of people out of money if I recall correctly. Shame as they were making some really nice shoes.
You could kinda lump in Jack/Knife into the conversation, don’t think I ever got into posting the specifics on db. Didn’t screw customers over as much as an internal quarrel that fundamentally changed the direction of the brand.

Edit: Lest we forget forget about good 'ole Lawless Denim.
