Adding to the gardening talk in the contest thread - I spend some time mostly each spring trying to set our now mostly established pollinator garden up for success. Light layer of mulch to spread this year after deadheading all of last years growth, and still some light weeding to do my best to keep out invasives. Lots of alliums, bluestar, goldenrod, false indigo (yellow), coneflowers, sedges, butterfly weed - I’m forgetting some - and a stray milkweed shoot setting up here. The goal is basically to have a little bit of prairie - mostly natives - in the front yard instead of grass. We have a (comparatively at least) small lawn as it is but happy to have even less here. Bonus of my favorite tree a weeping cherry in full bloom. Okay well a tie for my favorite with out black walnut. I was wearing the contest jeans but no pic of that!7 points

I wanted to share a recent denim blunder but first I'd like to say that I'm a denim noob. For probably 10 years I would wear cheap denim for months at a time without washing but I never knew about fades or denim quality. I was just a broke skateboarder, and I thought never washing my jeans would keep them looking new so people wouldn't realize I was poor. After discovering selvedge denim and more importantly this community, I've learned so much about the finer details. When I first dipped my toes into the world of selvedge denim, I decided to buy a pair from Iron & Resin, mostly because of the pocket layout in the front. Somewhere along the way in my "research" process I saw a video of guys wearing their denim in the ocean and talking about the fades this would produce so of course I had to try it. Since my last trip to the ocean, I've added a few more pairs to my collection and my Iron & Resin salty denim haven't gotten much wear time. Today I put them on and one of the buttons on the fly came apart due to corrosion from the salt water -__-6 points

thanks @srudy, @ashgiovanni, @MJF9, @beautiful_FrEaK, @ATWM, @vIGGiou riou and @Dr_Heech: really appreciate it… @ATWM: you’re correct: these were slides from various panels: one of digital art practices (crazy slide of surveillance cameras in prc classroom…), another on non-human migration meets human structures (talks on seeds retrieved from old ballast, another on animal movements and us-mexico walk) and another on ‘the misunderstood artist’ (and the imperative of artist to explain themselves)… my paper is around some 2017/18 projects by three african american artists who worked with chatbots: in wider context of how to think around AI and limited / specific data sets to avoid perpetuating techno-bro white supremacy (see musk’s x-ing great replacement conspiracy) and to think AI in other realm than great replacement… talked most about martine syms’ piece ‘mythiccbeing’… but stephanie dinkins ‘ntoo’ and american artist’s ‘sandy speaks’ get mention too6 points

Warehouse 800xx in 32, I believe they were about 81-82cm in the waist and shrunk down to 74 stretched back out to 80 in one day. I wore many slim straight pairs, Fullcount 1108, iron heart 666, flathead 3009, pbj, momotaro etc, they all stretched and sagged below my hips. These are really nice because the high rise allows my belt to sit above my hips and prevents any sagging. the denim is very rough and uncomfortable compared to the nice Zimbabwe cotton in other brands, I’m eager to break these things in hard like my flatheads. I’m going to avoid putting my cell phone and wallet in the rear pockets as it seems to promote too much stretching in the seat of the jeans.5 points

Finally took my one of a kind hand made embroidered denim vest to the tailor to be altered. Short people problems. Perfect length now. This old Coke jacket will be next. Temporarily pinned and cropped by about 3 inches. Looks great now. Fortunately the zipper was about 4 inches shorter than jacket itself. thanks @Maynard Friedman life isn’t forever but endings are difficult/ raise questions and challenges: we had fairly existential differences, how to keep the good and let go of the rest… those that go before us leave us all kinds of gifts… in the vein of @julian-wolf’s gardening: compared to his orderly plantings i am wrangling some wilderness at the back: hacking away as self seeded sycamores that have grown into fencing… ‘oh inch of life’…3 points

good reporting: can confirm /pol/ changed the board a lot from my time there in 2012 or so… the place is an example that free speech absolutism allows all kinds of shit ppl license to say all kind of shit: but dont know anywhere else with an equivalent my little pony board (see /mlp/) dont worry its back online now… this is a good essay on the use of language there at a certain historical moment: interesting for understanding the hope of truly anonymous speech, but the reality of what that then attracts…2 points

I got these last year, they are a really nice lightweight denim. I got them in size L, which fit about the same as my size XL in the khaki version. I would recommend waiting until Bears restock them. They will be way cheaper than buying from Jelado. And honestly I prefer the feel and drape of the khaki fabric compared to the denim, but if you want denim version of this style of pants, I would recommend them.2 points

Quick update pic from a couple weeks ago. I’ve worn these pretty consistently since the start. They have seen a variety of activities from light hikes, weekend trips, walks around town, several skateparks, and plenty of office & car sitting. I think I might give them their first proper wash in a couple more weeks. Whiskers looking good so far. The fit/cut is still very enjoyable.2 points

@bartlebyyphonics my condolences to you during my last contest, the signet warehouse one, I was with my mom when she passed and I was wearing my jeans. At that point I stopped wearing them and they’ve been retired since.1 point

@bartlebyyphonics I’m really sorry for your loss. Weird transition but you showed a lot of info, I can get glimpses of it but I am curious what was your paper on? I wonder if you and a friend of mine are in related pursuits. edit - scratch that I see the slides are from other papers.1 point

I mentioned recently that I had found a pair of jeans unexpectedly on Yahoo, they arrived last week: Slash Overalls S01XX. I've been a big fan of his work since I've been following him online for a few years, even bothering him via DM and email asking if he'd accept an international order. He's not set up to accommodate international orders yet, but maybe he'll be able to someday. Going through a normal proxy isn't viable since his jeans and jackets seem to sell out very quickly. So I was surprised to see these in BNWT state (you can see some residual chalk markings from where he was putting them together), unwashed and in my size for under retail! Honestly I debated posting photos of these, he's very opposed to resellers (there's a post on his blog about it), even banning anyone from purchasing again if he tracks down the serial number and ties it back to the original order. So hopefully I'm not shaking the hornets nets. It's hard to figure out what exactly these are (since he doesn't disclose the serial numbers), but I'm guessing they're a late 40s inspired pair. They even have a similar wonky stitch across the coin pocket similar to the recent SC45s. The denim is nice and hearty, and the stitching is pretty interesting. I'll need to get a better photo of the crotch construction, it's pretty interesting. The enamel coating on the buttons is pretty intense, even compared to FW. The backs of the buttons are also slightly indented along the top and bottom, hard to photograph but just an interesting observation. I'll probably keep these raw for awhile since I'm focusing on wearing other pairs pretty consistently right now, but it's nice to find something that I thought was unobtainable.1 point

I'm a bit of 506 nut as some of you may have guessed and while I wasn't short of jackets to work on, I'd had in mind a Slash Overalls one for a while and won a BNWT/raw one at auction (having previously been outbid on a WWII model). Seam puckering is pretty awesome after a soak, which is really Slash's thing. Fit is close to my platonic ideal for a 506- shorter body length than Freewheelers or SC 1945, right amount of dropped shoulder, sleeves are bang on, and its fitted but not as slim as my Neat Style/Denim Bridge (although it's a size larger than the Neat Style to be fair) - hoping it doesn't change much with subsequent washes. Raw vs soaked The white buttons stand out enough I think my co-workers might actually notice its a different jacket (think the last couple have all passed for being one and the same) Think I got a bit enthusiastic rinsing under the tap after soaking and got some staining from the patch... don't want to wash again yet so it'll stay for now1 point

Don't want to steal away traffic from the M-series thread, but I'll happily repost my The Flat Head S2004. The model number suggests they'd be a war model, but really they're detailed after the late '40s or early '50s, as best I can tell—couldn't say which reference period specifically. The name seems to have been a hold-over from the S2003, which were made the year prior and were a true war model. Otherwise, there's really not much info floating around on these. Here's them when they were new: …and here's after a decent bit of wear: I've said it before, but if it weren't for the low rise these would be way up in the running for my overall favorite pair of jeans. The detailing's great, construction's top notch, and the denim's faded just how I wish all '40s–'50s repro denim would fade. A++, would absolutely buy another pair if one ever showed up, even despite not loving everything about the fit.1 point

Here are some progress images of my ‘super denim collectibles’ 1946. I’ve never had 2 of the same pair to really to a side by side like this before, and kind of cool to see (IMO, of course). The worn pair is a sz 33” (up one from my usual size) and unworn 32”. I’ve been wearing since roughly the beginning of 2024 pretty much everyday for the first 8 months and after that wearing M-F and rotating different pairs on the weekend. I think I’ve washed 5 or 6 times - when I’ve felt like it. This is typically the kind of fade I like, and the stage when I would stop wearing and start to break in a new pair, but I plan on keeping these going. I really like them.1 point
