Shoes that look better with age...

How much are these going for? Can't find a stockist or online store. They need to make raw/tan and black versions. Love the minimal stitching and design.

 To my knowledge, these will only be made in dark brown. And very limited amount will be made.

I was doing some research on my Fathers Florsheim imperial brogues and came across this website www.classicshoesformen.com . 

I am not an expert in any way but I believe originally a double leather sole was used for extra support for "Stout" gentlemen.

In my line of work I end up having to crawl up a lot of ladders and have found that a single leather sole is not adequate when balancing on a rung. 

 

I'd take some of what is said on that site with a pinch of salt, be aware! The fella is first and foremost a salesman, and some of the info given on the stuff that I know a little about can be sketchy and sometimes downright incorrect. Worth double-checking some of the info there. For example these are listed as Grenson when they are actually Alfred Sargent (quite clearly when you know the last shape AS use for veldts).

 

Good for porn, though! And I do like this little paragraph:

 

A bit of history: Grenson is fondly remembered for its development during the war of a uniquely fashioned flyers boot with a fully lined and detachable leg with commando knife. In the event of being shot down the airman could remove the leg portion, leaving behind a simple black shoe to more easily blend into the population and evade captors. Now all he had to do was learn German overnight. Failing that he had his commando knife, a romantic foil for the Wehrmacht’s Maschinenpistolen.

Snowdown veldt boot in rough-out on a Ridgeway sole and lasted on the 228, an all-time classic country boot last. Colour in the fourth pic is most accurate.

CTB those are stunners! I've always had an appreciation for rough out and since it differs in appearance so much from the boots currently in my rotation (CXL & shell), it's easy to justify adding them to the rotation.

I've strongly considered the OSB Trench in rough out but I didn't immediately love them. That often means I have some reservation about them. Your Snowden's however, gave me a visceral reaction. I love the short nap that smooths out on the toe after a bit of wear, giving a virtual burnished appearance.

What does C&J call that leather color? Nicely done with the Ridgeway sole as well. It's a nice aggressive alternative to dainite, IMO.

They simply call it brown rough-out and they currently use it ln one of their Chelsea models and also the Exmoor brogue, if I remember rightly.

I loved the Arran boots to bits but always thought about how much better they would be if they were veldt and also in my correct size, as I kinda transitioned from wearing trainers to boots via the Arrans. So I sold a few pairs of boots that weren't getting much wear and Bob's your uncle...

They weren't cheap at all but I got exactly what I wanted my original Arrans to be. I'm glad I resisted the urge to fuck around with the basic design...

Great boots Chris! I was lucky enough to pick up my first pair of English made boots this week. I'm pleased as punch with my new C&J Islay. I recognize the Islay in the middle of your pictures but what are the other two?

I haven't posted pcitures of these for over a year I think...I own them for three years now, but they only get worn when I'm outdoors. This happens to be at the sea for the most part and i think the dark colour on the lower part has been caused by saltwater. Not sure though.

Slab order your usual red wing or Alden size. I have a pair and the sizing is the same as those brands.

I went against their recommendation and am glad I did. An 8 would have been too tight, but the 8.5 is perfect.

A question for euro based members, is €200 a good price for a new pair of Red Wing 8890 in Charcoal. There's a shop where I live has them on sale, I didn't check sizes or anything, just thought I ask on here first to see if it's a good deal. Also, I take it they're a good boot althought I've never been totally convinced with those white soles but I have a feeling once they're broken in they would grow on me.

Its a good price if 8890 is the style you're looking for.

 

You will probably find some moc toe styles for less than 150€ at for example Caliroots which seems to have RWs on sale every year. I would take a look a it when the winter sale begins in a few days.

Here's an update on my FH horsehide boots.  I think I have about a month of wear on these now.  Great boots, now that they've broken in they feel and look great.

my almost daily shoes, own this beast for two years, and i bought it in used condition.

starting to troubled with the unbalance sole

treat with some mink oil, kiwi shoe polish and a regular brush.

Great! No wet feet and good grip on soft surfaces (field/wood). Slippery though on wet stone, almost went for an involuntary swim in the thames today whist strolling along the foreshore.
