The film was released in 1975 and set in 1963. In that instance, Nicholson could be wearing a contemporary (ie mid-1970s) pair of Levi’s. If however, the costume department were aiming for something period correct, they should more closely align to an early 60s pair, which in current LVC terms would be most similar to the 55 model. I can’t quite tell whether they have hidden rivets or not but I think they do.

I would guess that in 1975 the knowledge that 501s changed subtly over the years probably did not yet exist as the vintage craze wouldnt begin until another few decades, and the idea probably didnt enter anybodys mind. its probably off the rack regular 501s or at most a thrifted worn pair from roughly the same year.

I first started seeing people who were generally into vintage clothing, wearing vintage Levis in the mid 1980s. There was already a strong collector interest by that time although the astronomical pricing was not yet in effect. A person with foresight could have salted away a king's ransom-worth of blue gold...

alright, good catch. the JP repro scene started in the 90s or late 80s sit makes sense that the vintage scene would have been going for at least a decade by then. my main point is i feel its unlikely that in 1975 they would consider whether 1963 levis looked discernably different.

oh i definitely have them but im not sure if they're in Europe or Shanghai. I will see if they're in SH when im back.

I was a person with some foresight back then, as l 'discovered' vintage 501's in 1986. Unfortunately l was a skint student and by the time l had some money to go with the knowledge, by say 1989, the sizes weren't there anymore or had out of reach price tags on them.

@horriblyjollyjinx Maybe, probably. But there are many people today that recognizes that the specific products they usually buy isn’t the same as it was a few years ago. So not completely unthinkable that this applied to people 50 years ago.

Levi's communicated explicit differences between cuts with their numbered models. But I'm not sure that their iterative changes of the 501 was communicated and known. So awareness of the minor difference between 63 and 75 was probably low.

I haven't posted here in quite a while. Good to see some familiar names still around. 

I sold some of my LVC but still have a lot. I sold my 1911 333s a while back. I see LVC has done a 1910 333. I still have my rare 1905 209 coveralls, Paul, I have a pair of 1880 waist overalls. Only mine have sewn on buttons, denim pockets, centered leather patch and I think it is called mock felled inseams. (not finished on the inside). A pair of 1922 ragtop. 1901s. 1920 201s. A pair of 1947s and 1955s USA cone denim. 2 pairs of 1933s both cone denim. New Japanese made 1937s I also have a 1953 type II (also made in Japan).

I'll take and post some photos if anyone is interested.

Wanted to add one pair of the 1933s is from 04 and I had them since new (raw). Factory code 643. The other pair is from 2017 also bought new (raw) 1880s from are from 08 and I have had them since new (raw).

I still have and occasionally wear:

1955 501XX (555) - well worn

1955 501XX (554) - kept for 'best'

1963 551ZXX (555) - started to wear again recently 

Also have the 1880s XX (denim pockets) from 2007 but they are just a toy really. On the few occasions l've briefly worn them the sewn on buttons have come off. This happened years ago with my 1st issue 1873 duck pants so it's just part of the lvc journey l guess. I also have the 1880s Triple pleated blouse which l now don't wear. 

I also have two pairs of raws, 1937 501XX (643M) and 1920s 201 (555). The only two Cone denim models are the 554 55's and the 37's. 

I'm more in favour of wearing Japanese brands now, like Freewheelers and Warehouse but still love my older lvc wearers; they just remind me of where all this repro business started.

My 20s 201s are also 555, Both my 47s and 55s are from near the end of USA made cone denim and they are both really nice. As good as some early LVC pairs I had of those years. My 1880s still have most of the buttons. I have had to resew them several times. I have worn them a lot over the years.  Really faded and a few spot repairs were needed over the years. ha ha. I didn't realize this but the ones with the sewn on buttons, the denim pockets and the mock felled inseams are pretty rare.

 

The 1937s I recently bought (on sale btw) are made in Japan. The buckle on the cinch is the older version and not the correct version. IIRC the correct version for the 37s is the two toned one like the one on the 1933s. Also recently bought the 53 type II trucker (on sale to). Also made in Japan with Japanese denim. The denim is really similar to the denim on my cone 1955s. Fuzzy for lack of a better word. Really nice denim and much different from the denim on my 47s and 33s. I have lost some weight so things like my 1905 209 coveralls are big on me but I still wear'm ha ha. From what I understand those 209 overalls are pretty rare to. I have the ones with the two horse linen patch and the only came pre distressed. 

I'll try and get a few pictures in the next day or two.

Top mail button replaced with Levis button. Original broke. Crotch fixed. Not quite as cool as Grants but not to far behind.

BTW Jake I picked up a  type II LVC trucker this year and also a pair of recent 37 501s (both made in Japan) that are both really nice. I caught them both on sale from the Levis site.

I usually doin't like pre distressed (though I do own some ha ha). These 1922 501 Ragtops have been a fav of mine since I bought them in 2014 IIRC. I wore the sh*t outta them for years. Also washed them more than I usually do because they were pre distressed and not raw. They have never been tight on me even when I was a lot heavier. Now they are very baggy on me but I still love wearing them because they are just so comfortable. Size 36/34 and I used to wear 38/34. If I were to buy them again today I would buy 34/34 of even 32/34.
