i'll be in nyc from 12/5 to 12/13. planning on finding a place through airbnb.

if anyone wants to give me the low down on rooftop bars with a great view, menswear stores, hole in the wall places to eat.

basically anything would help. thanks guys.

menswear:

+dover st market

+blue in green soho for denim or otherwise mij needs (they stock some other stuff too, primarily denim though)
+nepenthes on west 38th in hells kitchen is really, really nice. check their tumblr out.

for rooftop bars, brooklyn terrace is good, but a bit clubby(?disputable)

gu shine taiwanese restaurant in queens is sooo good.

Sorry to bump a thread from 6 months back but I'm heading to New York in may and looking for some more tips if anyone fancies helping me out? I have the guide but a lot of that seems quite 'general' almost and shopping orientated.

It'll be my first time and staying LES kind of area - looking at experiencing the city for 4-5 days as much as I can and also the shopping/tourist attractions side of things for the same amount of time.

Tips on good eateries (Pizza, Burgers, Steaks, Indian and Mexican mainly), good bars for a couple of chilled drinks and coffee for the mornings would be appreciated. Areas of LES/Manhattan & Brooklyn/Williamsburg mainly.

Also, is In-N-Out near JFK (only one in NYC it appears) worth the trip or is Shake Shack just as good?

Hit up Uncle Boons in Nolita for good Thai. People like Freeman's in the LES too, it's been around for a long time so probably not as much of a scene as it used to be. I recently had a good time going from the basement bar @ Tijuana Picnic -> Old Man Hustle -> Beverly's -> 169 Bar -> Baby Grand.

Go to Shake Shack in Madison Sq park, not central park. And then go to Eataly (also has rooftop) if you're still hungry. And then go to the Clocktower if you're still hungry. There are a gazillion places to eat and drink in NYC. ny.eater.com can be helpful.

Not sure this is the best spot for this but don't know where else to put it/will probably check a few other US cities as well.

How realistic is it to get by working some kind of clothing-related job in New York. I'm about to finish up undergrad and regretting my degree/career path and trying to figure things out. I've got a background in advertising/marketing and some in photography.  Seems like some guys on this forum work in retail but do extra work with the shop's tuff like marketing, branding, and social media (ex: Woodlands, Four Housemen, Nepenthes etc). Is anyone doing something like this? Should probably just look at advertising firms but not fully set on it and wandering what other people have done.

I wouldn't limit yourself to retail. There are a lot of brands, large and small, that are based in New York as well. If your goal is to get to New York and start sustaining yourself, you will have no problem doing so. It can take time to get a job, any job, so apply to as many as you can (this doesn't mean you should rush your applications or half-ass them, though). You'll be fine with your degree. I studied music technology, of all things, and now work in fashion. If I were you, I would apply on the brand side as well and start working as early as possible. This will help you gain experience and get you a paycheck (unless you bag an internship). Once you have a job, keep your eye on brands/retailers/companies you think you'd like to work at more than where you are currently and apply when something becomes available. Once you have a job, you can always quit if/when you find something better.

I think that statement above not only applies to fashion but also finance, tech, medicine, and just about every type of job.

Anyone really like Maison Premiere? Good oyster and french wine list, really enjoyable meal, especially if you're from far away and want to try North American oysters. Don't go for absinthe shit or that kind of touristy crap.

Went to yakitori toto in midtown. Was alright I guess. Cool thing is that some of the waitresses I actually knew from hostess clubs in Hawaii and Tokyo! They moonlight as escort so u can buy dessert!

The Met rooftop has IMO the best view in NYC. Only open on friday and staturday though and closes early. Otherwise there's the Empire Hotel in the UWS, although like most NYC rooftop, it's kind of expensive and douchy. On 57th and technically in Midtown, but I really like the Roof at the Viceroy. It's in a fancy hotel, but it's on the smaller side and doesn't have as bad as a showoff vibe like similar rooftops. Much better options if you're willing to go further down (doesn't have to be all the way downtown, in Midtown, I really like the Refinery Hotel and Pod 39 is cool too)

On the bar tip, any good record bars ala JBS in Tokyo ?

Looking for places that play rare groove, funk and soul.
