And to a native art gallery today, where I'm helping to host a poetry slam (this Wednesday at 7 if anyone is in the area!)

my wife and i were preparing to pick up our daughter jaemanis from her primary school at st theresia, a catholic school run by ursuline nuns located just behind the old sarinah mall in downtown jakarta yesterday (14/01) when my wife heard a series of explosions from our flat. we live very close to sarinah, on the other side of jalan thamrin, jakarta's main thoroughfare. she thought they were the sound of thunder, or controlled explosions from the MRT construction nearby. it was only a few minutes later that we realised they were the sounds of bombs.

every thursday, our daughter has extra lessons at her school, so we were still at home when the attack happened. on normal days, i'd be crossing jalan thamrin on foot on my way to pick up jae at almost exactly the same time the attack started. i often see the cops from the bombed police shelter playing cards under the ketapang trees across the road on their lunch break. most of them are older policemen, classic chief wiggum-types. probably no match for the young, svelte attackers. one of those policemen apparently died in the attack.

we couldn’t pick up jae from school as most of the roads around our flat and to her school were blocked. after several frantic calls we were able to get a friend who was already at the school to evacuate jae to her house nearby. at around 4 p.m. we got words that it was finally safe to get out of the house.

deserted jalan thamrin plays backdrop for news reporters as we crossed it on the way to pick up jae from a friend's house:

our favourite coffee shop Saudagar Kopi on nearby jalan sabang closed early:

our daughter was a bit confused but a total trooper:

makeshift road block on the backstreet where our flat is located. the security guards were worried some of the attackers would escape into these back alleys:

jae kept asking why her extra lessons were cancelled, why we didn't pick her up, why a kid at her school told her that mr alex the PE teacher said he heard explosions, why the gate to her school was briefly barricaded with tables and chairs. then she decided to draw a map of her school, including the escape routes for the kids' evacuation today:

school wasn’t canceled the next day (today, 15/10). those indefatigable ursuline nuns! so we woke up early as usual and was out of the house by 6:15 a.m.

security guard stood watch at the back entry of an office building just 200 metres from the scene of yesterday's attack:

normal traffic. we're inside a bajaj, jakarta's version of bangkok’s tuk-tuk, taking our daughter to school. the nuns at jae's school have decided life goes on as usual. serviam:

jakartans came up with the hashtag #kamitidaktakut (“we are not afraidâ€, tidak takut = not afraid) minutes after the attack. in this case, obviously, #KFCtidaktakut!

people milling about the crime scene. indonesia's police chiefs were being interviewed by a tv station right on the pavement where shootings took place yesterday. gold:

we were looking for an alternative route to our fave coffee shop (not this starbucks) but there was none. nowhere to go but following the usual route of our morning walk. this starbucks was apparently the first site that was attacked. a bomb exploded inside and when the crowd tried to get out, two attackers were waiting outside with guns:

walking along police line. as we passed it we just realised this is the exact site in front of the starbucks where two of yesterday's attackers blew themselves up. seriously like a metre from where i stood taking this photo:

the outdoor smoking area of the starbucks all covered up. on car-free sundays me and my family often have breakfast inside and i would sneak out for smokos on this now bombed out terrace:

a "mobile barista" serving instant everything from coffee to instant noodles from atop a bicycle calmly rides on:

an open food court next to the starbucks still open for breakfast and still filling up with hungry salarymen. most overheard phrase: "86", policespeak for “everything under control“:

when we got back to the house, i just realised that all this time i’ve been wearing my sc hawaii:
