Cute kids beatle!!

I've long admired this thread - such awesome stuff. I finally have a decent cam to shoot with… My dad "perma-loaned" me his T2i/50mm combo! My mom thinks it's a ploy to upgrade his toys and I think she's right!! ;)

At any rate, I've also been taking some photo courses, so any feedback & suggestions would be most welcome! :)

I've been living in Ottawa since January & have hardly seen any of the area because of work! So finally, this weekend, I took a bit of a tour - thought I'd share!

A colleague suggested taking a drive along Aviation Parkway, which is a really nice scenic route that takes you past a lot of the Ottawa-area sites of interest.

First stop was at the aviation museum - lots of cool old planes, and even helicopter rides for the fat of wallet!

Continuing along the Parkway, there are numerous little scenic lookout areas where you can pull over & take in the sights.

Here's the Ottawa river, with the province of Quebec on the other side.

The marina below was busy on such a sunny day, and lots of people were out enjoying the water.

The bridge to Hull, Quebec. Party town! It's where you go when things close for the night in Ottawa!

Continuing along - one of my favourite buildings - the National Gallery of Canada. The place to go to get your art fix. It's had a number of controversial exhibits - including one artist's creation - made of raw meat - for which the Gallery paid an obscene amount of money! For obvious reasons, it wasn't displayed very long :P

I wonder if that's where Lady Gaga got her idea!

Modern architecture switches over to the old as you approach the Parliament buildings - Canada's seat of government. The detail work is really amazing.

The clock tower - swarming with tourists! The fireworks & crowds are astonishing here on Canada Day - next year I'll be prepared to take some shots!

Since I'm practicing my photo skills, here are the obligatory flower shots! I love shallow depth of field!

By the time I got home, I was hot & thirsty, so I headed over to my neighbour's place, and we had a beer while we chilled with his 3 month old shiba imu puppy! So cute!!!

Didn't take any pictures inside because I felt it wouldn't be appreciated, which is a pity since all the girls working the counters were cute Chinese girls :( .

After that I planned to take a proper stroll through Den Haag, but due to rainy weather I had to cut it short. Did very much enjoy this streetsign (it means beershore or beercanal):

To get into the mood of what is ahead of me in a few weeks I strolled through Den Haag's Chinatown, and being a born and raised citizen of Amsterdam I couldn't help but take this picture:

Made a quick pitstop at the Chinese supermarket on my way back to the station, where I took a leap of faith and bought this interestingly looking drink. It wasn't bad at all actually, just a bit too sweet for my taste.

Snippets of my week….

We're back to hosting visiting family & friends, after a week "off" the previous week. Lot's of BBQ's!

My sister goofing off, wearing a necklace made by the kids!

Summertime means major construction everywhere, and for months now, our neighbourhood - like many others - has been ripped up, with workers laying pipes, cable & whatnot.

One afternoon, we get home and see this:

62b7cba6.jpg

My first reaction was - better check the phone lines. Sure enough, no dial-tone. I called our service provider right away… It took them 3 days to get it fixed. I also called the construction company and gave them shit for not even bothering to let us know that they had cut the cable.

After I got off the phone, I told my wife that it could have been worse, at least they didn't hit a gas line….

The next morning, our doorbell rings at 7 in the morning - I'm glad I was home & not out on a training ride. It was one of the workers. They had - you guessed it - hit a gas line, and were telling all the nearby residents to evacuate.

I pulled on my Roys, grabbed the family, guests, the pups and my camera bag and we vacated the place. We were lucky that they allowed us to start the car. We dropped our daughter off at camp, then circled back to keep an eye on things.

By this point, the street had been closed off, the police & firemen were there, and somewhat stunned residents were standing around at a safe distance.

It starts to pour - of course. So we took the pups for a brief walk, then came back & I continued to snap photos.

The cop was really something… He bullied a couple of neighbours and demanded that they not take cell phone pics. He spent a good deal of time glaring at me (I had my Canon "cannon" pointed right at him) but was too intimidated to pick on me :P

cbe7bba2.jpg

The fire crew was great - hoses and canisters were out, in case of an explosion or fire, and everyone was awaiting the arrival of the gas crew to cap the leak.

29be5d7c.jpg

51fb16b9.jpg

They finally arrived - an hour later - and got to work. Fortunately, it wasn't one of the main lines that had been ruptured, but the smell was everywhere. It only took them about 5 minutes to cap it.

3469d8f1.jpg

Once all that was over, one of the gas co guys came in to the house with us to check for any remnants of gas. We got a clean bill of health. So we got our sopping wet selves dried off. By then the rain had stopped, so we took the pups for a longer walk.

Drove to Lincoln,NE today. My wife went to a lecture at the University. I am not really collegiate so I bummed around. Did a little thrifting, but most importantly was able to enjoy 2 of these. Real coffee is difficult to come by, as it's about 200 miles away in any direction.

YUM.

Also, here's one of several endangered species I saw today :

would have had a lot more pics, but the phone died just before lunch.
