  1. Went to put on my jeans (LVC 1944) for work last Monday and noticed that the crotch stitching had begun failing (that famed Levi's quality ) I slipped into my Canes instead and after work I went and raided my dad's work bench; among the boxes of nuts, bolts, screws, and nails, there was of course a box of odds and ends. After a bit of sifting I found a few copper rivets in all different sizes, the smallest looking like it would work to shore up my crotch. I used an awl to make the hole, pushed the post through, put the head on, and used a pair of pliers and a hammer to secure it in place (couldn't find a setter so I made do.) A pair of snips removed the excess post, and I hammered it flat.

  5. Washed my 1880s and 1890s. Obvs I've posted the 1880s a lot here - the last new Cone denim design, natural indigo grown in Nashville. Thye are fabulous. What we love with denim is now different jeans wear in differently. These crock a lot - but the areas without wear retain their colour. These have had a lot of wear, maybe 18 months of summers. Marbling at the back of the legs is lovely, I will post a pic when I can. The 1890s (left on the dual pic) are Kurabo, the jeans are posted as new right at the beginning of this thread. Kurabo's version of the early fabric is very green. I like that too but it doesn't have the micro texture of the Cone. These were really hard to wear in, almost no crocking with wear. THey are now my main summer jeans as I can't bear to retire my 1880s, which have now those little loose threads that signals that heavy repairs will soon be needed.

  6. The jacket is great and stiff as raw (it‘s one washed/rinsed). The denim is pretty hairy: I guess it‘ll be more hairy after washing or soaking. I'm thinking about cold soaking the jacket anyway since it's so stiff. What surprises me, however, is the way the pockets are finished inside: Or was it done that way in 1962? 😉 Anyway, fantastic jacket and besides that perfectly made. I love it!

  9. Sold the FOB jacket…I wasn't happy with the fit, even though I think the jacket and its quality are great. I bought a Sugar Cane 1962 instead and couldn't be happier with it! Fits like tailored 🙂

  10. I’m around 2017–2018, I had some pretty bad experiences with a pair (actually, with two pairs) of the RARE R008 jeans that left me with a nasty taste in my mouth, but I always really wanted to like Big John and to believe that I’d just gotten unlucky. Anyway, I’m finally giving them another try. They recently released a slew of things in a duck and a chino both made fully from Sally Fox’s naturally colored cotton. I’ve probably posted about it before, but: Although I’ve never actually met Sally, her main plot of land is right next to the farm that I worked for through a lot of my 20s, in a great Northern California Valley that I hold close to home—so, even beyond its intrinsic coolness factor, I’ve always been really drawn to everything I see that’s made from her cotton. These are the XX801S (41) “XX EXTRA CHINOS TROUSER CLASSIC”. I bought them from joenet.co.jp, which I’d never heard of before, but who were very helpful over email and were quick to ship. (The Big John web store does offer direct international shipping, but with an egregious markup.) They’re a true wide–straight fit, and I’m expecting to need to take around 2” off the hems unless they shrink quite a bit—they’re in the wash now, so we’ll see soon. Here’s the initial fit, feat. Tezomeya tee + Town View mocs

  13. Have you missed me?.. We've been visiting Crete so get yourself comfy for a mega-post I picked up this Suzuki Ignis Hybrid in the airport.. small cars rule here, the last thing you want driving through villages on narrow roads or passing a local in a battered old pick-up truck on a mountain pass is a big-ass car.. It wasn't as enjoyable to drive as the Fiat's i've driven around Italy, but decent enough. This is the first year i've had a modern smartphone.. google maps is just a revelation for travelling! .. the places where we stay are often on "unnamed roads" which i can't type that into the Nav.. additional confusion with the Greek alphabet with their Pi, Omega and upside down f'kin triangles!! .. it's more like a maths equation ..I dropped a pin on google maps and it took me straight there.. our house was here. ..before we left, I was trying to build a gmaps itinerary of addresses so i didn't have to worry about typing confusing shit in while i was there. I was struggling with one aspect so I called the offspring over (he types with both thumbs simultaneously) .. he said, and I quote “Oh my god, you’re such a fucking boomer" (I’m actually Gen-X) "give it to me” .. 10 seconds later and he’d sorted it Then he said “this is an impression of you trying to use your phone“ and started repeatedly poking it with his index finger.. .. Just wait till he wants his laptop fixing! This is our first house in Kalami* (more of that later) nestled in the trees on the outskirts of Kalyves ..the view from our balcony, the cicadas were deafening! .. the mantis were in their millions! The first night we drove into Kalyves looking for somewhere to eat.. it's a very traditional Cretan village, i spotted some tables and they invited us in, we were starving having not eaten since leaving the house at 6am.. we ordered lots of food, there was just us, a large Greek family and a young Greek couple having a romantic evening meal. A small band set up, a guy on keyboards, a guy on guitar and a guy on bouzouki, i thought 'Ow! i hope this isn't going to be some tourist shit' but i couldn't have been more wrong, it was very traditional Greek, folks were taking turns to sing songs, even the restaurant staff came out for a sing. ..after a couple of hours Sarah said 'i wish they'd clear our table' so eventually, i asked for the bill, at which point they cleared the plates immediately and brought out a small vase of ice-cold Raki and 3x shot glasses.. we obviously didn't know the etiquette. Kid was like, "Hellooo!!" I've never really liked Raki but this village Raki was different, no aniseed flavour, made with herbs.. when it was gone, they brought out another bottle and 3x free desserts.. The Greek dancing started, just the old fellas then the younger women joined in.. i was applauding at the end of one song.. an old timer came over and said "i'm glad you liked it, our timing was a bit out, the old folks dance a different style to the younger folks" .. What the!? .. I'd drunk 2x 500ml Mythos and 9x shots of Raki.. like i'm going to understand the intrinsic nature of Greek dancing.. We had to leave to car and walk home through the dirt.. we got home at 2.30am.. having walked off the alcohol, the boy and i went night swimming. Deserves a quiet night This is another village where we ate called Aptera, every single meal in the villages ends with lots of free Raki ..nice view of the mountains Hello I wanted to explore this abandoned village while we were in *Kalami.. it's not mapped so i spent hours searching satellite images https://filmfreeway.com/1385354 ..eventually i found the coordinates on a Greek hiking forum, it was a different 'Kalami' at the other side of the island .. the fk! no wonder the sat-nav doesn't work properly. .. 5 days later we moved on from the peace and tranquility of Kalami and i drove to our next destination on the outskirts of Chania Old Town. We rented this fancy-ass house for 5 days (it cost more to rent this place for one night than the previous place cost for all 5 nights).. top balcony was the doors from our living space and the bottom balcony was the doors from the front bedrooms. Kitchen.. ..out of the doors was the roof terrace to the top right you can just see a minaret which rang a bell around 6pm.. ..it slept 8 ..The street view below our balcony Chania is a mix of Venetian and Turkish with traditional and modern architecture, old town has historic monument status.. it's built.. according to the archaeological research, on the ruins of ancient Kydonia, Kydonians are supposed to be a pre-Hellenic tribe. During the ancient period (3.000-2.800 B.C.) the old harbor was used by Minoans, as a crossroad of all five continents.. it was conquered many times during the past by Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Turks, Hebrews, Egyptians, and Arabs, till the end of the 19th century, when it was liberated... so a good mix. The city comes alive at 11am and goes to sleep at 4am.. (my teenagers preferred hours) i took these photos at 10.08am and the streets are still deserted. ..harbour panorama This was part of Chania Film Festival, it was an exhibition of album artwork ..crumbly old Cretan mixed with urban hip. ..street market ..herbs ..A yawning cat photo which the boy took featuring my Dapper's shirt, Supreme shorts and Nike 78 Elite ..tourist shot of the lighthouse at sunset More Later...

  16. I think the jeans could look good on someone else. the models look like skinny lanky dudes where anything this loose will fit a little dumpy on them. esp the older man....no shade to him at all but he def seems like he has the older man saggy body build.

  22. Thanks Paul, I didn't take them, i took an old pair of Clubmasters, i didn't want to risk losing them, leaving them on a restaurant table or in the car. I only need glasses for reading so once i've looked at a menu or my phone, i take them off.

  24. We often ate breakfast at Monogram at the end of our street ..iced rose (or white) tea and freddo-espresso (sadly, it didn't come with a chocolate frog) was the drink of the morning. ..in the footsteps of Anthony Bourdain, one day i walked from Old Town to Bougatsa Chania, most of the city is pedestrianised so i just left the car on a dirt banking on the outskirts of the city for the week and walked everywhere.. Bougatsa dates back to Byzantine period and became popular in Crete following the Greco-Turkish war in the early 20s when a population exchange saw Greeks living in Turkey returned to Greece.. Anthony will elucidate.. It only cost me 3€ ..kid didn't fancy it so he went to the Greek Football Museum instead ..he said the owner was super-passionate about football shirts. Soon as he walked through the door the owner said "what country are you from?" and took the boy to the vintage England section, showed him photos of Pele, Maradona and Cruyff wearing shirts then let him hold the actual shirt in the photo .. lots of amazing donations in here. ..again, gmaps was great because i could just pin the boy coordinates and say.. "i'm eating lunch here do you want to join me" ? This was Dominico's .. the only hand rolled gelato on the island ..mixing ..it's stainless steel with liquid nitrogen underneath ..spreading, i had espresso (with a shot of espresso) Sarah had pistachio ..offspring had strawberry and mango with coconut milk and yogurt base ..rolling ..a couple of days before we left, his friend Oli turned up.. we didn't see much of them for the last 2 days. fin.

  27. My partner inherited my lot 501 Edo Ai a while ago, but never ended up wearing them much, I guess because of how loud they were—mostly the streaky dye job. Recently, they bleached them and overdyed with indigo, hoping to end up with a more consistent color. I’m really pleased with how they turned out: hopefully they’ll end up seeing some more wear again

  30. File this under reflections. Home recovering from surgery and I realize how often we take for granted how nice it is to just be "normal". I would love to be able to just normally go to the bathroom, shower, or put on a pair of jeans right now. I will try to remember this when I return to normal.

  34. Got some FOB First time getting a pair of duck cotton pants and they feel light but sturdy - 11oz. So should be perfect for this time of year. Not sure what the shrinkage situation is with these but they are long enough for a double cuff and are a relaxed fit so I think I should be fine...any others with any experience with these? Bit of an impulse buy but I'm glad i did Update - washed at 40 air dried and no noticeable shrinkage. FOB also got back to me superfast on instagram and confirmed they are a one-wash so should not shrink much at all.

  36. Reviving this thread, I stumbled into the Big John store in Tokyo after having seen some of their new jeans that were made of Suvin Gold cotton (and also on the very old Ishikawadai loom) when looking up SDA's suvin gold items. I went to the store thinking nothing would fit me, as I have abnormally large thighs (most relaxed fits are still tight on me), but surprisingly these S1956WS fit me (I'm kind of curious who their target customer is for this because anything that fits me well is a strange fit for normal people). I also like the zip fly, so finding something that fits me and has a zip fly is incredibly rare. I think there is also a non-Suvin Gold version of these jeans too. They run 30.8k yen, or 28k without tax, which at the exchange rate at the time of ~152, was a steal at USD185. I got them tapered, started wearing them at the beginning of this year, and just resoaked them, they seem like fast faders. The denim is rougher than I would have expected for Suvin Gold, but by no means rough compared to some of the super slubby stuff that's come out in recent years, and it has softened up quickly. I've been really enjoying them so far, I think they're a great medium ground between super vintage brands that like Warehouse and the IMO overdone extra-slubby stuff that's out there, interesting but not crazy denim and a lot of good details (plus a fit that works for me and the zipper). https://bigjohn-jeans.com/products/s1956ws-001?srsltid=AfmBOoofIgttxRVS-_9qw8eqzH2su-AZ90R9x3q6VC3qlSbgI10tF95r https://blog.denimio.com/ishikawadai-denim-series-big-john-and-more-famous-japanese-brands/?lang=us Below is the detail from the site: Introducing the new premium denim from "ISHIKAWADAI," crafted with 100% of the finest Indian cotton "SUVIN GOLD." Enjoy the exquisite fusion of tradition and modernity achieved through a vintage Ishikawadai spinning machine from 1953 and the raw finish of 14oz selvedge denim. Features ■ Material Made with 100% SUVIN GOLD cotton, one of the world’s rarest cottons from India. By blending first-pick and second-pick raw fibers with fallen cotton from SUVIN GOLD, we’ve achieved a rich, hairy texture and a rugged look. Known for its silky touch and deep luster, this denim stands out in quality. ・Tapered straight fit (roomy around the thighs and tapered toward the hem) ・Zipper fly (front zipper) ・One-wash finish ■ Manufacturing Process Spinning: Using a 1953 Ishikawadai ring spinning machine to create natural unevenness. This low-speed process reduces stress on the yarn, resulting in robust denim threads. Dyeing: Pure indigo rope dyeing Weaving: Crafted on vintage shuttle looms into selvedge denim, the fabric incorporates natural cotton-colored weft threads, producing a slightly brownish unique texture. Raw Finish: No sanforization (shrinkage prevention) or skewing (twist prevention) is applied, offering distinctive fuzz and twisting effects that develop beautifully over time with wear and washes. Details ■ Original BIG JOHN Specifications 10oz ultra-thick oxford pocket linings (in olive, inspired by the Ishikawadai spinning machine) Original zipper fly and copper rivets Custom black rayon tags and orange SUVIN GOLD labels for accents ■ NEW Vegetable-Tanned Leather Patch A durable cowhide leather patch with the "Four Crown" emblem. Featuring a world map and cotton motifs, it represents BIG JOHN’s global vision and the origins of denim. The bottom of the label is embossed with "SUVIN COTTON 100%" as a mark of its rarity. ■ Flasher Design The flasher features a special design inspired by the cotton-picking scenes in India, capturing the story behind SUVIN COTTON.
