I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but out of all the one/two-person brands I know of, I'd take Ande Whall, especially from before the earthquake or whatever destroyed his original workshop and he made jeans with hidden rivets and stuff. Ande's jeans were affordable and not $700, he actually made and delivered what you ordered, didn't sue you for putting pictures of his jeans in a book, had a unique design of his own instead of trying to be 1000% accurate repro of this one deadstock pair made for two weeks in May 1943, and was totally in control of his own thing instead of having a single retailer in charge of distribution that would hype his pants to the moon and back. That's a combination of factors that to me at least, is hard to beat. The denim community really did lose a real one with Ande.9 points

There's nothing like moving house to demonstrate you have to much stuff and clothes 😐 There's nothing like moving to a bigger house to demonstrate you have plenty of room for more stuff and clothes6 points

I sometimes search the internet for denim infos and find exactly what I’m looking for in posts on Denimbro which I’ve written5 points

He made a fkin Powerpoint .. that’s why! Ive filled my brain up with bike infos and it’s pushed out a lot of the denim infos5 points

Funny he’d name drop and not just say “__ years designing, making” but also, those of us who’ve worked around narcissists aren’t surprised by this behavior and 99% of the people who watch these videos aren’t really listening, or know/care about his old brand We can all rest assured that most people at the company know he’s a con and can’t stand him though4 points

What i find strange about these folks.. same with Masterson's, they'll jeopardise it all for such a low-level grift.. although i don't condone, i do understand those folks who check out for £100k+ .. because it gets them out of a business that they might not want to be in.. but this bellend above, was doing something he loved (if he didn't love it, why is he still doing it now?) ..and with minimal amounts of internet-shilling, folks were literally queuing up to hand over large sums of cash in exchange for his work, all he had to do was 'the work' and his business would be a success.. but no, throws it all away for a few measly grand.3 points

he's helping them with a new concept of airport stores where all the snacks, magazines and neck pillows are preorder only but you'll never receive them.3 points

I worry that all I'll be able to remember when I'm 90 are the weights of fabrics2 points

I could see myself being in a similar situation some years down the road. Definitely short term memory of these last few years is compromised due to child/lack of sleep.2 points

I know fuck all about this brand but my takeaways here are.. the leather shoulders on that first jacket look terribly cheap and shiny .. they’re repro-ing the 90s a decade after everyone else and the dude is wearing an outdoor jacket and hat indoors? .. is he trying to disguise the weight he’s put on?2 points

Excellence in an art or craft and running a business are two separate skills. Rarely does the same person exemplify both to a high degree. Sort of sucks that it needs to be the case so often, especially these days, but it's not an excuse for ripping people off. Even worse is that better sellers/businesspeople/con men tend to succeed more than the ones who are excellent in craft. Rewards go to the wrong places.2 points

^ Just my opinion, but I don’t think so. I believe it simply depends on the setting of the individual operator’s hemming machine.1 point

@Double 0 Soul No, I don't know of any connections between Rising Sun and J/K.1 point

For something I used to live and breathe.. I’ve disappointed myself with my inability to retain infos from 10-15yrs ago.. I blame baby brain, in 15yrs time @Broark .. Slash Overalls will just be a distant hazy memory. Didn’t the guy who owned JK also have some connection to Rising Sun .. or is this some other half remembered memory?1 point

Kind of, mostly lead by one bad actor. I've been sitting on all the details for a couple of years now, been meaning to type it all up. Hoping I can get to posting it in the next week or two.1 point

Didn’t Roy also make some fake Jack/Knife jeans that were far superior to their own ones?1 point
-
I can’t remember the details @Maynard Friedman .. wasn’t it something like .. Jack Knife was owned by somebody cool (his name escapes me) who made nice jeans and such.. then he handed it over to some grifters who ripped folks off, then to complicate matters further, there was a second imposter Jack Knife company based in the far east copying the brand? I knew this shit when I paid more attention to the denim0sphere, alas..1 point

I read recently about a German entertainer/TV&radio guy. He had passed away in his 80s. He had his own shows on TV and radio for decades and was quite popular and well liked. Apparently in the 80s or so he had a tough time taking drugs and frequenting brothes and also debt. Despite making good money apparently he was in debt for around DM 700,000 (in today's money probably EUR 1m) or so. Instead of filing for personal bankruptcy and having the debt extinguished after five years or so (in which time you only receive the bare minimum to live from your income) he paid back everything over many years once he got sober again. Quite remarkable, especially compared to today with scams and fraud in many places.1 point

Guys.. it's less to do with the water and more to do with the salt content in your sweat, the spices in the foods you eat and where your fingers and body have left sweat / salt deposits on the ferrous. A chap i used to work with.. all of his carbon steel carving tools were black.. mine are all silver.. one day, i was struggling to develop a shape i couldn't visualise.. he said pass me your gouge.. i handed it to him and he took it by the blade, he started to carve out the shape and handed it back.. the next day, his fingerprints were rusted into the steel.. i was pissed but 30yrs after his death, i still have his fingerprints rusted into my carving tool which i find quite poignant.1 point
