Ran 89 back down through the Navajo Reservation and onto 64 into the Grand Canyon National Park on Saturday. We rode the south rim and checked a couple scenic overlooks. Then we headed down 64 S to Williams, AZ. We took the historic Williams, AZ train up to the park yesterday and walked the geology trail along the south rim. Headed out onto Route 66 today. It was a bit hazy both days at the canyon and very hard to do it justice in photos anyway, but here are a few. My partner took the train photos. I'll try to have them send a few over to post later on. The train was fun. A bit of song and dance for entertaining the digital generation, but cool to ride in vintage cars from the '20s and '30s pulled by a nearly complete original locomotive from the '20s that fits the models that carried people to the canyon for decades before the ubiquity of the automobile. Its resurrection in the late '80s after two decades out of commission revitalized the town of Williams and kept it from being wiped off the map.19 points

If you part the frayed denim fibres with your fingers then yes.. Copper rivets started life like this.. Here is a pair of vintage Levis i saved with the same button backs ..and another pair with an extreme example of the rust proofing which FWs were trying to emulate.. ..alas, they went a bit OTT and it looked more like enamel .. after the first wash, the hidden rivets turned pink.. i think it was a reaction with the washing detergent .. a few more months of grime build up ..starting to oxidise before i put them into storage ..and after a decade in storage10 points

@Mr Black did some repairs for me recently.. i was really happy with his service. I always patch / darn my own jeans by hand but i'm never 100% happy with the results so when these FW-47s blew out in the crotch around a decade ago.. i put them on ice until i found an alternative to my shitty patch n' darn... This is much better! This M11026 needed the box stitching replacing over the pleats.. sadly neither of us had the forethought to photograph the 'before' .. i suspect that whoever bought this back in the 90s, it didn't fit so they unpicked the box stitching, it still didn't work so they put it into storage for 30yrs.. but before they listed it on Marcari, they stitched back over the pleats.. I quite liked their wonky, asymmetrical box stitch but what i didn't like was their choice of thread, although it was a good colour match to the 2 shades of copper thread used to construct the jacket.. the thickness / guage was too thin.. Mr B posted me some samples of what he had in stock, the colour match was good but the thickness still wasn't quite right.. after some weeks of searching, he eventually managed to source the correct thickness and colour of thread Sample thread above, existing, below ..finished result Thanks Martin! ..and here are a couple of my recent repairs.. I've hand darned a small hole in this 75yr old Champion sweatshirt Its just above the hip so out of sight I've sewed the arse seem of these CSF .. and darned a few small blowouts here and there .. i'm getting better lads8 points

@julian-wolf, We took the big roads from Vegas to Zion, 15 out of Vegas to get to Valley of Fire and then 9 off of 15 to get out to Zion. Today we left Zion and ran 59 out of Utah onto 389 in Arizona to 89a to go through Kaibab National Forest, down into Marble Valley and up to Page on 89. Postcard views the entire ride.3 points

Thank you … thank you very much indeed. I mentioned somewhere here earlier, I’ve made a couple of hundred belts after hoping I might have made a couple - full stop … you (and others) put your trust and hard earned dollars into my project - I remember every single belt for every single reason, that’s my privilege2 points

Celluloid has the S3100VX in a 33 waist (and also 31 and 32 if anyone else is interested) for the JP domestic price - no tabs or arcs though. Similar to Fullcount, I think that Celluloid may be the cheapest place to get Samurai stuff now after they adjusted their international pricing model. Ordering from them is pretty painless too. Samurai Jeans S3100VX Zero + Taisen Model Wide Straight 17oz Zero + Selvedge Denim SAMURAI JEANS 2025 - Celluloid Self Edge seems to have stock of both the 3000 and 3100 models as well - no arcs or tabs either though.1 point

There are some more photos here Edwin ..they've only been worn a couple of times since then^ so not much has changed other than summer lighting, a different camera and oxidation of the rivets1 point

@Duke Mantee An honor to’ve been among the first & among the last Big ups to you for finding a cool niche for yourself, building up a great skill set, and getting out on your own terms—even any one of those alone would be a big accomplishment1 point

Really love the denim on these 47s. Very soft and stretchy. Kind of the opposite to what I was expecting from cones 40s type fabric but maybe that's my misconception. Could also be because they are well worn. Reminds me of the resolute 714s I had. I have some LVC 66 japan made arriving soon so will be nice to compare.1 point

A guy is selling this nice vintage Lee 101-J jacket: What puzzles me is that it has an internal label that, as far as I know, should be from the 60s (with made in USA and the R mark only) but on the left pocket it has a label with R+MR (that is more 70s) when I was expecting R only. It has a 82 in the back of the buttons Does anyone know if this can still be dated from the late 60s? Was there some transitional period with a mix-match of R and R+MR? I own a 101-J with "opposite labels" R+MR in the internal label but R only on the pocket, it's all very confusing... Any help is appreciated. Thanks1 point

Yeah - I got a pair from Naoki that arrived at the start of the week. The Okinawa denim was calling me after I reacquainted myself with my MF Ranch Blouse but, after taking a closer look, plumped for the Hawaii for a change and out of curiosity. What great denim. So nice. I was a bit hasty and forgot to get them hemmed so it's heavy double cuffing until I do. I know what you'll say... yes the denim rail is coming under a lot of stress lately... but I am otherwise pretty low-cost 😁1 point

So it started with Texture. Then Voluminous jeans with texture. Then Heavy voluminous jeans with texture. Then Dark heavy voluminous jeans with texture… anyway you know how it can spiral… I’ll do the Sugar Cane Hawaii post soon for further proof of that 😉 Anyhow these 17oz Samurai S3100VX WW2 model landed today… and they’re ace. They meet the brief perfectly. Great service from Daniel at DC4 in Berlin... and lovely hemming to boot... using actual Samurai thread so it’s all matchy-matchy… I’m going with one big 3-inch fuck-off bucket cuff... no stopping me... 😀1 point

This is a fluffy piece of documentary but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Some of the designs he’s come up with over the years really are just so good.1 point

Hi all, For those that don't know me, I spent the last 3.5 years or so working at Son of a Stag/Soldier blue in London, UK. If any of you had any repairs done by them during that period, it's very likely to have done by me. I've now left SoaS and have moved down to the Kent coast where I'm going to spend more time making bags and leather accessories (wallets, keyrings & the like) I'm also set up to take on jeans repairs. So, if any of you want anything done, please do get In touch. Will be very happy to give you a price. Below are a couple of before and afters I did. Sadly l can't justify the cost of a chain stitcher so I unable to offer shortening. Apologies for the blatant promotional post 🙂 Martin1 point
