The Flight Jacket Thread

Right, I know almost nothing about jackets but I thought it was about time I got a vintage one to compliment my denim obsession.

Picked this up for £70 on Brick Lane with the condition that I could return it if i were to change my mind. It fits like a glove (size 40) and I liked the wear on it. The Talon zip was the selling point as I think this shows age...

Could anyone here please tell me any info about this jacket, its age, value and if its worth keeping etc.

Much appreciated!!

bluegoldblues, that just looks like a generic late 50s or 60s A-2-influence jacket. The main question is whether it's decent quality leather - the uncropped shots look pretty good, but on the close-ups it looks a little cheap, as if it has a printed grain. If the lining etc is pretty good, that's about what I"d expect for £70.

So. My G.1 - M7823AER.

i agree with Paul, leather seems cheap on close ups. on the contrary knits seem in good shape, wich is surprising... no creases on arms too. anyway it is a good looking jacket and a fair price.

maybe you could post natural light pics and fit pics. and probably give it some mink oil or whatever your favorite leather product is....

Thanks for the info! was thinking more late 60's but I can go with an optimistic 50's date!

Quality wise the jacket is really heavy simelar to a belstaff so i'd like to think its decent, can see where you guys are coming from with the flaking..The leather is REALLY dry, will deff get some sort of conditioner.

She's also got a serious kept in a box for 40 years smell going on...any ideas on how to neutralise this?

also does anyone know of a talon zipper dating reference?

Your guess on date is probably better than mine, easier to tell in the flesh, and in fact 50s designs are often quirkier and more agricultural than that. If it fits you, looks good, and the knits and lining don't need repair (which I know, as someone with tons of wrecked jackets, can cost a lot) then how could u argue for £70?

my old 50s jacket, which Im selling, smelt a bit musty.. I actually used autoglym (sp?) conditioner for old car seats, it moisturised the leather, and together with leaving it in a well-aired place, totally eliminated the smell. When summer comes, as it one day must do, leaving it in full light, with UV, also helps.

Seal real deal, right? That's the Aero body shape, out of the box. I prefer more length (because I don't tuck in a lot of shirts). But that definitely fits you. Nice jerky horsehide there too.

Will be sending this jacket to Aero this summer to have the knits replaced since they have been battered by moths.

^^looks good.

is that a vintage Aero? If I remember when they first started making goatskin they were made in India or something like that... or the leather was from India or my memory is getting mixed up with something else....

either way the jacket has looks like it fits great. Are you sure the knits are that bad? The leather doesn't look that broken in yet, but it is Seal so it's tougher to see in the light.

thanks for the comments and rep guys

yeah, its not noticeable on the pictures but one of the sleeve knits looks like it was chewed on; the other have some moth holes, i don't care , i'll wear it anyway untill the weather is too hot and then it will be off to Aero.

I don't think the jacket is that old, definitely not vintage. Leather makes this lovely sound whenever I move around :)
