^^ Great stuff undcvrsm, Tochigi's steerhide ages to that very distinctive golden yellow, love it!

My Tochigi leather belt got ruined during moving apartments last week - massive oil-dye spill kinda killed the grain - am in the process of sueding it.

^ Cheers patrick_b. I think buying a natural veg. tan belt is a very worthwhile exercise! A lot of fun to be had.

Hi all, just a quick heads-up that I may have another group buy project coming soon. Exciting stuff as always, custom forged double-prong buckle, with a very new & exciting veg. tanned leather (currently still being developed), stay tuned! :)

^ That's a thick belt!

But I would recommend using a calliper to measure leather thickness - the amount of error measuring with a ruler like that is way too much when we're talking increments of 0.4 mm (1 oz).

Mike,

WHO THE FUCK HAS VERNIER CALLIPERS AT HOME!

Haha, a decent one is like $50 on eBay. Good investment! :D

What do you guys think of a 12 oz veg. tanned shrunken bull shoulder?

Or would you prefer a thicker butt leather, but with a less interesting grain?

(Please PM me if convenient, so I don't pollute this thread)

Mike, is there any chance, since the belt is still on the drawing board, that it could be a single prong buckle (custom forged)? Shrunken bull shoulder sounds interesting, any visually accessible sample? I love THICK belts, though

Looking forward to know more about this project, please keep me posted

Cheers mate... definitely everything is still on the drawing board at the moment. I don't even know how long it will take to confirm the leather availability, or if the little tannery we're looking at will ever be happy with the specific leather being developed.

In regards to the buckle, the double-prong is the new option being looked at - but I would think you'd be able to choose regular one-prong buckles if you like. Again, the process & details are hazy, and I haven't worked out the logistics of this yet, as I haven't got the green-light for this project yet.

From the previous two projects, I've realised that no matter how great the specs. are, there are bound to be folks who wish to change certain details...so it's really up to the craftsman whether he'd want to do a uniform production, or allow people to specify the details.

The thickness of leather, though, is what I'm pondering at the moment. The projects that have been done isn't all about the weight of the leather...the Baker oak-bark & Moser hand-stuffed leathers have been chosen due to their exception tannage and character. And they weren't only thick, but also had density and depth of grain growth.

So, if I can't find a special leather, I won't try and push a project through...we all know where to get a double-butt 15 oz belt, it's kinda like standard fare on this forum now :P

Will post the preliminary specs. and pictures once I get the go-ahead :)

In the meantime, please PM me with suggestions.

Edit: I'm also having trouble finding craftsman in Japan to do a project in 2012 - the language barrier doesn't allow for complex discussions :(

I look forward to see how the project will unfold, and I'm kinda happy to hear it will probably not be a made in Japan thing. They're awesome craftsmen (Japanese awesomeness is expressed pretty much in everything they do, except porn, maybe) but their prices are definitely out of reach for me.

I know it would be almost impossible to repeat the affordability and quality of the joe hill project (the buckle pin issue a few people experienced was a bit of a meh, but after all it had to be contemplated as a possibility for something in its 1.0 version), but keeping price in that range would be awesome

I remember you mentioning Ozzie leather once, maybe this land also hosts a good craftsman and we could have the next project made downunder.

And thanks for promoting these initiatives Mike! .

Cheers Ord! Perhaps a Japanese project later on, when I have time to visit Japan again, and catch up on some Jap magazine reading.

I've tried looking locally before, haven't found a leather which was interesting. The curious ones (camel, kangaroo, salt croc) are usually too thin or impractical for belting. There is a local Victorian tannery that does veg. tanned cattlehide, could look into that.

Craftsman wise, I've noticed a local workshop called TailFeather - don't know if they would be interested in a small run project though.

Mention a bunch of friends you have in Carlton who would be very upset if he refuses to work on that project, among which, your uncle Mick (specify his surname is GATTO). I'm pretty sure he'll be happy to give you a big discount too.

^ lol. My friends in Carlton are all poor uni students :P

Sent them an e-mail today, asking if they would be interested in doing something for early 2012.

In the small chance they do agree, we'll need to source some good local stuff - the cattlehide they use are European in origin.

Thing is though, hand-made things like this cost more in Australia compared to US and UK...

Still, really want the project to be Australasia based in 2012.

Btw, here's mine...low tec but reliable.
