What are your jeans doing today?

got some thinking to do...I may just return this tomorrow and pop for the f1.4 version, but at 4x the cost, i'm not sure its worth it for only build quality, IQ is about the same. Today I felt like this thing was going to break if I manually focused with it!

you should return it. it broke in mrs. ming's camera and we had to pay to get the lens extracted and repair the body. the lens was done for.

you get what you pay for, so go for the better lens. we are.

well i used it [50mm 1.8] again today at Flugtag and i'm at the same spot I was at yesterday...its just too fragile to be useful to me. I'm not THAT hard on my equipment, but my 20mm is built very solid, and I just cannot fathom putting this 50mm through any kind of abuse. it goes back to the store monday for the 50mm 1.4

pics from flugtag to come.

What my jeans did last night, first time out with the 50mm. great portrait lens. beautiful night, and an amazing sunset over minneapolis. portrait-centric post this time, with a few randoms thrown in.

FLUGTAG PICS!!!!!!!!!! We got to see the world record today! 207 ft. from a design that resembled....you guessed it, an airplane! a really fun day, a crazy tan, and much fun for the whole family. here are a few from today. most of the ones of the jumping are 100% crops, don't have a telephoto in the bag. but mad jealous over the guy I posted up here with the fucking 400mm. damnit.

This thing actually flew, it was amazing to watch, though its design was a bit....well, it was an airplane so of course it won!

must spread -z-.. i went to the flugtag when it came to portland a few years back and it was awesome. it's really fun to watch people attempt to fly something they've built, for the pure enjoyment and fun of it, just to get a good laugh. i'm also right there with you in the jealous "fuck you" to the guy with a 400mm.. i feel like that at every sporting event i shoot when there are dudes with 70-200 f/2.8s on one body, and a 300 or 400 mm f/2.8 on the other...

Wish I could rep you Z, made me miss the home away from home that I haven't seen in person for about 3 years.

I don't have any pretty pics of outside but I did spend some quality time with my Sugar Cane 1966s. I decided that I want to hem them after all and have a good cut that I don't have to cuff. My problem is that I don't really like the way a lot of local tailors here hem jeans (they always make the fold too big) so I decided to do it myself. Avert your eyes, this is going to be messy:

First, mark the spots. The pin is where it's going to be hemmed to. The second pin is gone but that marked where I needed to cut. Remember that we have to fold twice, so 3cm extra is needed. At this point I'm thinking, "Holy shit did I just cut my Sugar Canes?"

28cjdia.jpg

Measuring to make sure I didn't just fuck up, and evening out the hem.

n9grd.jpg

Here's my stitching method. Did I mention that I don't have a sewing machine? This stitching method will get some severe roping. It's already noticeable thanks to both high tension and pulling. I watched a few episodes of The Shield while doing this and only stabbed my finger once.

169ncjd.jpg

Success, just enough stacking to look normal for the cut with enough room to cuff if I want. Jeans are pretty much unworn so of course they look slightly off.

295db1g.jpg15dr9x.jpg

Not pictured is my time spent with a soju bottle and my Skull 5507s spending a while patching up crotch holes with just thread. If only I hemmed my Sugar Canes first for the denim instead of fixing the Skulls first.

today was another adventure up country. this time to an isolated farm on the central plateau to collect a truck with my mum and stepdad.

1.jpg

it had been parked for ten years and the first problem was how to get it down the hill onto the trailer.

2.jpg

luckily the brakes were not seized, and the steering worked, so with some pushing, some winch and some spinning tires we got it onto the trailer.

3.jpg

next problem was the cattle yard with deep water, it was decided that the best way through was to use the hill to get a run up.

4.jpg

after bouncing through the water and doing small damage to the tow vehicle it was going to be smooth sailing, well after negotiating the narrow muddy farm track towing a heavy truck and avoiding the sheer drops.

My wife's grandfather passed away recently, and some similar tablets of his were found. He was a lumber man, and his order tablets were overflowing with information about cuts, species, quotas, etc etc. All in his own hand.

Saturday:

39133_415971454350_644634350_4495638_4239134_n.jpg

The Boy and I wend to the park behind my house for a little swinging action.

39133_415971449350_644634350_4495637_2884369_n.jpg

The biggest summer time holiday in my town is July 24. It's the day Mormons came to Utah. It's bigger than the 4th of July. My neighborhood is ground zero for the party.

39133_415971434350_644634350_4495635_1329309_n.jpg

Chevron had a 33,000 gallon oil leak that gushed into this duck pond a few weeks back. Created a nice little mini Louisiana in my backyard. Still smells pretty bad.

39688_415973399350_644634350_4495659_7139888_n.jpg

This guy is a clown, I think he is on Hypebeast.

39133_415971429350_644634350_4495634_6793275_n.jpg

Some O.G. Americana workwear (they host a Pow Wow to even out the Anglo aspects of the holiday).

39133_415971459350_644634350_4495639_4471116_n.jpg

Making some ice cream sandwiches for the kids. Vintage T, Lee cinch-back, Converse shoes.

39133_415971439350_644634350_4495636_5378927_n.jpg

Since my street is in the "fallout zone" for the fireworks, the police shut the road down and it turns into a pretty big party. Disregarding the pious origins of the holiday, we all had too much to drink.

39133_415971414350_644634350_4495631_5736657_n.jpg

39133_415971419350_644634350_4495632_7049976_n.jpg

39133_415971424350_644634350_4495633_1335296_n.jpg

The fireworks are launched in the ballpark behind my house -- close enough you can feel the concussions. There was a mishap and one of the mortars tipped over firing shells into the crowd at the ballpark. A bunch of people were taken to the hospital. My neighbor was disappointed because for years he has hoped the firework display would burn down his busted garage. No luck this year.

Went home to New Hampshire for the weekend. Spent the day at The Fells a historic estate and garden near my house. They also had a sculpture exhibition going on on the property.

The property was originally owned by the Hay's who eventually put it into land trust. John Milton Hay, born in 1838, son of a rural Illinois doctor, graduated from Brown University and at age twenty-two was chosen as private secretary to Abraham Lincoln. He went on to serve as ambassador to Great Britain and served as secretary of state under presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. It was on the shores of Lake Sunapee that he and his wife, Clara Louise Stone, sought refuge from public life, and in 1888 Hay quietly began acquiring abandoned farms that would eventually total nearly 1,000 acres.

The road into the estate, parking is by the main road, its about a 1/4 mile walk in. Kind of surprising because most the people who come to visit are over 70.

P1010634.JPG

The first of the sculptures that are on display on the way in. Not a huge fan. But 5,000 bucks and its yours.

P1010632.JPG

One of the sculptors George Sherwood had 5 or so pieces, all made of stainless steel and aluminum and all kinetic. His were all pretty cool.

P1010642.JPG

P1010646.JPG

The rock garden was built in the 40's when the family still lived there.

P1010655.JPG

An Old Fountain is the center piece of the back yard.

P1010673.JPG

My favorite statue was a solid iron pig. It was hard to get a picture because it was constantly being sat on by kids.

P1010679.JPG

Out in the woods they have a fairy village where little kids can build tiny fairy houses of of scrap wood, bark, rocks, and other stuff.

P1010681.JPG

A fairy house

P1010682.JPG

A trip through the oldest garden brings you down to the lake.

This was technically yesterday, but I couldn't catch any internet.

I was feeling a little under the weather, but my jeans were in Stockholm, and went to visit lildavid at the C store. And me, complete with hobo beard/hair and busted ass travelling hat.

Awesome guy, great store. I felt I would have missed something if I didn't make a stop while in Stockholm.
