For a few days I broke out my Brit army brace which go well with my lightweight 1901 jeans. I think my fellow campers thought I was a nut job but were too polite to say aynthing. Other friends dropped in and complimented me on my attire... but since then I have noticed the braces (suspenders to you yanks) getting regularly piss-taken in txtx. Oh well.

frontbol.jpg

Funny how something that was entirely the norm less than a hundred years ago is now considered unusual to the point of being bizarre. Suspenders usually get attention in the Colonies, but usually it's favorable, at least in these parts.

Is there some sort of added cultural stigma in the UK due to the skinhead movement?

There's an indirect connection; suspenders haven't been worn much since the skins, and perhaps Mork and Mindy, so they're more likely to attract comment. Plus of course there's a healthy national tradition of taking the piss.

There's also the issue of head size. I think to wear suspenders well you need a small head. It's more historically appropriate.

Also, re: your more recent photo-post: I wish I could borrow your eyes for a day - you have such a beautiful way of seeing the world around you!

good girl!

You "grownups" and your adorable Me&MyKid photos. Killing it!

And I was a total climber when I was a kid, too (okay, still am a bit). My mom loves telling the story of walking into the living room when I was three and I was about 10 feet up the face of the book-case, clambering my way towards the ceiling.

Unsurprisingly, I've had five concussions, four of which were before I was 9 years old.

I'm actually a bit laid up feeling unwell today, but you still managed to make me hungry!

Cute Weimaraner pup (and nice post, as always). For the owner's sake, I hope it didn't come from strong hunting lines. I live in the country and raising a bird dog is a still a nightmare at times. I couldn't imagine dealing with him in a city setting.

Day 3 went moderately better than Day 2 (and as of today - Day 16 - the trend of slight improvements day-to-day has continued... with only a few hiccups).

Headed out in the AM with one team. Failed to get our respondents at the first club (this has been a recurring theme, and an unending wellspring of anxiety for me), and learned that our matatu driver was a royal a-hole. The team leader had gone with him to try to pick up some respondents in the matatu to bring them to the church where we'd be doing the surveying, and he apparently

A) whined non-stop about the condition of the roads and the wear on his vehicle (not any worse than any other roads, and we had contracted all of these matatus through a central guy who would be responsible for paying for any maintenance costs)

B) started jerking his foot on the gas/clutch in order to make it seem like he was running out of gas and whined about us not giving him enough gas

C) whined about us working him too hard (the length and breadth of his job involved driving us to meet with a club in the morning, then taking a nap, then driving us to meet with a second club, then taking a nap, then driving us home... God forbid we ask him to do 5 minutes more driving)

D) stopped the matatu at one point in order to call his boss right in front of Tony and loudly complain about the above points A) through C)

The team leader got so fed up he just told him to go back and went the rest of the way by foot.

Aaaaanyway. We managed to get the second club to meet with us earlier than planned. And the scenery was... divine

Hi neighbor!

IMG_1096.jpg

Once I saw that things were rolling along smoothly enough, I decided to head back to town. I had the matatu driver take me much further along the way than necessary, mostly to show him that we weren't going to tolerate his crap, and then caught another matatu to town.

[sidenote: on all matatus operating as "taxis" (these are privately-owned minivans operating along semi-fixed roots, so really more of "buses", yet confusingly called "taxis"... and then there "special hires" which are, uh, normal taxis), there is a broadly-painted statement that "This taxi is licensed to carry 14 passengers". I even noticed in a guide-book I'd skimmed shortly after arriving here the comment that the author "never saw a taxi carrying more than the licensed number of passengers". LIES! I can't even count how many times I've been one-cheeking it on a taxi seat, with between one and three total strangers' body parts entirely too intimately intertwined with my own. This day was a particularly lovely example: I counted 20 adults and 2 children in this taxi]

I had to do... something(s) in town but I can't remember what. Afterwards I posted up on the balcony of a 2nd-story restaurant for some lunch and work. I was famished, so did some pretty semi-rational ordering:

IMG_1098.jpg

Tea

"Garlic mushroom toast" which I expected to be some sort of be-mushroomed garlic bread but turned out to be toasted sliced white bread with some sort of heavily garlicy (mmmm) mushroom-based gravy-mush

and

An "avocado salad" which turned out to be an avocado with some soy sauce poured on it, accompanied by a few slices of tomato.

That was about it for noteworthiness that day.

Here's a two day post...last night, I got back to the hotel from work (in Wisconsin again this week) and to my delight, I got to watch the 1994 USA vs. Columbia World Cup match! I watched this when i was a kid back in the day, and it was really fun getting to see it again, and to hear how much the announcers were talking about the lack of skill on the US squad / how Americans don't like soccer yet. laughed quite a bit at this.

Drank some summer shandy as well, refreshing. later realized i drank the whole 6 pack..

and now, today, driving home from Wisco, did some (not as dangerous as it looks, I wasn't looking through the viewfinder) random photo taking.

Oh fuck! I have totally seen that car around before, usually over in WePo. Did you see the chick who drives it? Are you seeing the decal on the drivers side rear window?

I was unable to locate the owner of this embarrassment of an automobile but yes I did see the sticker... Tell me she is not god looking.
