lets talk watches

Hey guys. So I am graduating college this year (and I am presenting my undergraduate thesis at a national conference:)) so my fam wants to get me a collective graduation gift. Naturally my mind immediately jumped to a watch. I think the limit is around the $2,000 range. Right now I am interested in the following:

Sinn 756

Sinn 356 flieger

Sinn 556

Anyone want to throw out some other suggestions within that range. I'm not looking for anything in particular, except that I probably do not want to exceed 41/42mm in size.

Since you like the Heuer Monaco, I'd rather have one of those than a Sinn. You can probably track down a Calibre 17 Monaco chrono for 2 large, was ready to cop that one last week for that price.

I have the 356 and dizzhizz has the 756S, and they're both nice, the 756 being nicer IMO, but they're not 'nice' where they're like commemorative watches or anything. Kind of like nice daily beaters but not something that you're likely to will your kid someday.

damn you john Q you owe me $1100

lol, I played at the casino all summer hoping to win some watch money, never panned out. I even won and inordinate amount almost every time, I could walk out with a grand five out of seven days a week and bet I earned like $10-15K this summer total, but somehow it never added up to enough to buy a big watch at one time. =\

How much did you start with, 5k?

Usually only fuck around with 500 because I don't want to go stupid, but for some reason I had about two and half k on me the other day.

damn you john Q you owe me $1100

ahaha sorry.

Shit like this cracks me up though. Around the middle of last year, a friend of mine made a huge amount of cash on the AUD one day, roughly in the order of 50k. On the exact same day, another friend lost about the same amount, obviously with the opposite position. He manages his own super and was pretty pissed off about the loss. We were giving him shit for weeks, saying how all things being equal, you gave 50k away. lol

Yeah, its so hard to build up cash. My thinking is either win big or not at all. Overall I am definitely down.

MSRP on the IWC 3717 with the croc strap is $4400. If I can negotiate that down to the 3.5k mark at an AD, I'd jump on it.

Anything else to consider in the 3.5k range? That's the magic number burning a hole in my pocket. Looking for anything on the more casual side as I already have a dress watch, but no day-to-day one. I have an extremely small wrist though, at 6". Case diameters don't really matter, but watches with large faces (i.e., large diameter + small bezels) look wrong.

I wore a Sea Dweller (not deep sea) briefly, and it looked fine.

^ that's like 20% off, so I don't know if you'll be able to get that much off at an AD. Grey market dealers barely give 15% on IWCs.

You can probably wear the 3717 though, as long as your wrists are more flat on top.

Hi guys what do u all think about Steinhart watches, particularly the Marine Chronometer II Roman model. or am i better off with other brands. Im looking for something simple and clean not too complicated on the face. cheers!

i don't have any Steinhart watches but i am on their site all the time

i really like their nav B-uhr

and their triton joints

on another note, i sold off my stowa antea KS and i can feel the urge to get another sort of watch

thinking of a marathon gsar

and a sinn u1

alas, the second may stretch the budget a bit

also been thinking of an orange (or black) seiko monster

i don't know - not sure i really NEED another watch

but you know how that goes

Looking for a solid, tough number in $2-500, and won't do a Japanese watch.

Like German, pilot, infantry-style, etc. minimal. Tough, calendar, pref auto or chrono, but can live w/o it. Where to cop?

get a UK MoD G10-issue watch.

Hey dis, AFAIK this is as close as you can get right now

http://www.watches88.com/pd_citizen_promaster_sky_eco-drive_bj7019-62e.cfm

It comes with an engraved caseback though so that's a bonus.

good looking out, and I think I like this version better actually. I'm into the idea of having one solar watch and this will fit as my black watch and maybe get me used to wearing 42mm cases as well. hm.

I like the Steinhart Nav-B Uhr that's been mentioned a few times recently. Solid pilot's watch at great prices but no calendar.

Check the Steinhart site and be sure to check Watchuseek for any used Nav B's before making a purchase. There's usually one or two people selling on there.

Sorry a noob question, but the clock to the right, what is it? Fucking awesome..

Got this in a b-day present a year and a half ago, I'm kind of happy with it even though it's "just" a PRC 200... Probably buying something nicer when I have the money :)

I used to have 5 or 6 but I sold off all except one, which is a steinhart ocean DLC. The watch was a 21st birthday present so I'll be keeping it forever, plus it runs well and looks great.

I had a few orients, a hamilton , and some other steinharts. I dont regret any of my purchases because It let me get a feel for what I like. For example, I had a watch with a 44mm case, and while it looked great, I realized I don't want anything that big and sold it off. Now I try to stay somewhere between the 38 and 42mm range for watches.

My next purchase will probably be a sinn 756. I'm going to get the stainless steel bead blasted case because while a pvd/dlc coated watch is nice, I just find it is not as versatile.

Later on I'll most likely get a stowa antea. Love the minimal dial and blue hands. Any other watches i get in the future will be the ones off my wishlist.

Currently only working with:

Rolex Air King (just put back on oyster bracelet for the winter, leather for the summer)

Seiko SKX173 (Daily beater on oyster bracelet)

G-Shock DW6900

Would love to pick up a Sub at some point. Also really like the Nav-B pilot watches from Steinhart. A Sinn 656 is also on the pickup list.

I'd be happy with 4-5 watches at a time. If you want to talk to a real collector talk to Kiya. He mentioned awhile back that he has something over 100 watches and he always seems to be on the hunt for a new vintage Rolex. Would love to see him list off his collection.
