Shoes that look better with age...

Moykky, are you happy with your Malton boots? How have they broken in?

Yeah, I'm very happy. I have the ones with commando sole (if I didn't mention that before). It took about one month to broke them in, I walk about 5 miles to classes and back every weekday. When I polished them with Kiwi 'light tan' they softened quite much ( I didn't polish them for first month..) more.

The construction is so good compared to 'modern' shoes. For example when I'm walking downhill with my laces open, with normal shoes it hurts my toes when they hit the front of the shoe but with these, my toes just smoothly compress from sides... uuh... few too many drinks. I will post some pictures tomorrow if I can.

And ofcourse I have to give my vote to Maltons over Alden Indy's. They are quite different, but malton's just have some... elegance in them. I want the Tricker's jodhpur boots also!

First picture-post here.

These are a bit more fashion over function than the rest of this post, but I think you'll agree these belong.

Well, I am still torn. Those photos from thelion1856 show a truly excellent boot for serious use. These are no wannabe poseur boots! Great photos! Thanks, Lion.

After losing a very spirited E-prey bidding on a pair of NIB Malton’s in my size last night, I wrote to Adam at Alden about the AF64 Indys. He responded immediately. I was a bit surprised that he really did suggest stepping down a size (even more than I would have). I’m a perfect UK10, but right on the line between a US10.5 and 11, depending on maker. Sizing down in my brain means the US10.5. I gave him measurements, and he suggested a US10 for me in the AF64. BUT, he has NONE in my size. The wait will be 5 months!!! Drat. For a dress shoe, I could easily wait, but I need a tromping boot much sooner.

Sigh. Such is my luck.

It is also worth noting that the AF64 Fan version of the Indy is leather-lined, while the standard Indy has a cloth lining. That said, the standard Indy is always available. Oh, well.

Just for note that I'm US10 - 10.5 and in Tricker's I'm UK8.5, could be even 8.

Dang! The sizing thing drives me nuts! This comes as a surprise. I have a cool pair of Tricker's Keswicks in a 10.5 that feel just the 1/2 size too big. Insoles and thick socks and they're okay, but not perfect. I was, thus, convinced that 10 would be perfect. Grrr.

Anyway, thanks for the great pics. I've been waiting for you to post them since you first got 'em (and said you would!). You're taking care of them, for sure. And don't they just look great with denim?

The dilemma remains...

The Alden dealer who fitted me for my Indy's suggested the same thing, and they fit perfect. I'm a size 10.5 - 11, and he ordered a 10 for me.

They are an orthotic boot, so I'm thinking they may be a half size larger to fit orthotic foot beds. So unless you are using orthotics or wearing thick wool socks, size down.

Moykky, very sharp boot. Trickers has, as you know, of course, a brogue w/ cmmd sole. What stopped me ordering them was the size thing. I'm 10.5 US also, so your info helps me out on that.

Then there's this http://www.resoul.com/Shoes/Mens/Fiorentini%20+%20Baker.html 3rd image

Or Buzz Rickson’s 1940’s U. S. Army and USAAF

Officers’ Low Quarter Service Shoes, available at History Presv.

I've got the winter to think it over.

Edge do you know about WWII Impressions? They have some really nice WWII Army and Marine reproduction shoes. Allot cheaper than HPA and faster service.

Thanks for the compliments. One of the reasons why I could go down even half a size more is because that commando sole is only available at one width which is quite wide. At US sizing my width would be 'D'.

Those AF64's are stunning, especially if used as a hiking boot -Style int the trail... :)

How much they are? Alot...

Price breaks: The Indy is $290, the Fan-Indy is $355. For the difference, I’d say it’s no question. Why waste $290. In a trade-off between the Malton and the Fan-Indy, I’d go with the Fan-Indy. Between the Malton and the standard Indy, the Malton wins. As the Fan-Indy in my size isn’t available for 5+ months, I’m on the hunt for the best price I can find on the Malton. My feet are wide, so the Malton commando will be great for me.

I need field/hiking boots. In Myanmar, field gear was the lightest chinos I could find and trail runners (Salomons). I’m in the NWFP, Pakistan, now. It’s much colder and the terrain is rough and mountainous. Heavy denim and boots are called for here. That, and my first winter in years is upon me. I am not used to the cold! Brrr.

My only other Tricker’s are these Keswicks. That double leather sole may take years to break in, but, Dang!, these are built like tanks.

Oh, and this is a local shoe repair shop. I took this earlier today. End of the roll on my old-fashion film camera.

P.S. – Not to diss airfrogusmc, that’s some pretty nifty military stuff. I hate the flashing text on that site, but they have interesting stuff. Thanks for the links.

Leica No offense taken. I used to be a hasselblad guy myself. Several 500 CMs 2-50 2-80 120 150 180mm lenses eye level finders 4 220 back 4 120 backs. I really like the M-5 also. I've used them but never owned them. Still have 4 Canon F-1s and some really cool old aspherical lenses.24 55 & 85. Oh back on topic sorry I like the standard Indy becasue of the vintage soles. They really look the part. Some of those modern sole ruin the vintage look for me anyway. Nice wingtips.

I'm not feeling how the toe on those is narrower than on the normal indy's. Might just be the angle of the picture though.

It's totally the angle. Here's straight on.
