Shoes that look better with age...

just curious is there a difference between this and the 8-stitch?

Not really. I think its a more aesthetic choice, because the stitch goes around the white dots nicer. They both serve the same purpose which is to reinforce the attachment to the mid-sole. I like what Sugarcane does by combining it with nails.

They're making a comeback:

www.idealcapco.com

that site doesn't work right in *any* of the three browsers i tried on my mac: firefox? nope. chrome? nope. safari? nope.

maybe i should hunt down a windows xp machine with internet explorer 5 or something, eh?

really sucks, because i have been looking for a vintage style cap for a while and haven't had any luck.

should be studying, but can't stop admiring my newly acquired GTs!

they're a bit big on me (i purchased the same size as my clark dbs; different users told me to either size down or purchase the same size), so i'm trying to work with it still, but the leather is reeeeeal nice

Wow, nice boots.

How'd you size on them? (Specifically comparing the white's and viberg.)

If you were referring to my post, I went with an 8.5E (which is their D) for the Vibergs and a 9C in the White's. I think I could have done an 8.5D in the White's, but they still fit fine. I wear an 8.5 in clarks desert boots and most other shoes.

Stopped by Context to check out the "Rough Roy" and they are pretty awesome in person. The leather is much tougher feeling/looking then I expected. Now I definitely want a pair...glad they won't be available for a few months so I have time to save up for them.

Also grabbed the new boot issue of Free & Easy. Never bought one of those magazines before because they are crazy expensive for a magazine but damn...if you like boots it's like a boot porno mag. I just wish I could read it...but totally worth it for the tons of great pictures of awesome boots.

Not sure if it's been discussed much on here, but I finally got to see the Wolverine 1000 Mile Boot 721LTDs...and for $725, they are utter horseshit. I sincerely hope nobody spends that kind of money on such unremarkable boots.

I don't think they are horseshit, (I've seen some pretty shitty shoes) but they are way too much for a pair of Allen Edmonds. Maybe around $500 mark would be more realistic, however you can't blame them for jumping on the band wagon.

Anything in particular that you really didn't like?

Anyhow, I'm actually not surprised at all. I have the original ones in rust, which need a resole. I paid about $200 for them, which still feels like too much. The stitching was all over the place, and the left and right boots were uneven. I really didn't like the tapered toebox either, but that's not the main issue I had. I just thought the QualityControl was pretty terrible. All the same, they're my beater boots. For the money, my Iron Rangers were way more worth it.

And for 725, wow that's a lot of money. You could get Cordovan Aldens for cheaper..

I picked up a pair of Wolverines in a local store about a month ago... They were the lightest boots I've ever held. Felt like I was holding a pair of Vans or something... If the same construction is involved with those that goes into the normal thousand miles then I don't want any part of it.

The combination of unremarkable craftmanship on all accounts and some questionable aesthetic choices paired with finishing of the shells that doesn't even belong in the same ballpark as less expensive Aldens makes them a pretty poor choice for a "lifetime boot". I'd not buy them for $725, $500, or $200. The rest of my hatred for these boots has been pretty well documented in this thread already, the thing I mainly intended to comment on was the vast difference in what I am led to believe are effectively the same shells from Horween after being processed by Alden and by Allen Edmonds...Alden has developed a technique the results in a much more beautiful final product.

coleslamyum; do you know if brass or unionmade are located anywhere near kansai area? It's probably more convenient since i'll be staying in Osaka. Do they understand english?

I hope you mean Union Works, because Union Made is another store in Tokyo. Unfortunately all the shops are located in or near Tokyo. Brass is located in Setagaya and Union Works have 3 shops, Shibuya, Aoyama and in Kanagawa, Kawaski City west of Yokohama.

I've contacted Union Works before about overseas orders, but they don't do overseas payment. However if you send them in and pick them up, I'm sure they'll be more than accommodating. I've only contacted them in Japanese.

I've never tried to contact Brass before, but I know from reading their blog, that the turnover time is about 2 to 3 weeks, depending on if you need a full resole. They also do bespoke boots. I suspect that they only speak Japanese.

Honestly, the easiest person to speak to is Okuyama-san at Hukurokuju, if you are going to head into Tokyo anyway. He speaks English and is a great guy. Besides, I'm a bit biased when I speak about him because not only is he good at what he does, he's also a good friend.

…but I managed to do a little googling and found some boots repair shops in Osaka. I can't vouch for them since I only found them a few minutes ago.

By the way if you have some Wesco's that need to be done, the repair shop is in Osaka, but I think you would just get them done by Wesco in the States (cheaper and closer).

pls someone rep coleslawyum for me (i cant)

thanks cole for the info and the links! If i do find the possibility to go to Tokyo i'll send them to Okuyama-san, otherwise I might try one of those Osaka cobblers. I live in Europe so sending them to US cobblers is just as much a hassle as sending them to their Japanese collegues.

My 2nd attempt with White's Oxfords came today. I am 100% satisfied with how these came out. Everything looks perfect to me. I still do like my 1st pair, but these turned out to have quite a different look by changing some details.

Here are the pics beside my lightly worn Black Chromexcels:

Both pairs I changed to aftermarket laces. The factory black round puffy ones just didn't do the shoes justice.

The Black Cherry Water Buffalo is so soft and shiny!!
