The highlights are really blown though. Did you try the Recovery slider in Adobe Camera Raw?

The light being emitted from the teeth cleaning lasers was something like 8 stops different then the overall exposure.

No way you could bring that one back. I could either have a properly exposed picture with an interesting detial blown out or a completely black frame with properly exposed laser light. Not the most ideal shooting situation.

Yeah I know what you mean. At least w/ nature photography the contrast is between sky & ground, so a split ND would bring the range down.

I think the image is very strong and the highlights being blown I don't think really take anything away.

agree. i often notice on 'digital photography forums' like dpreview, the sensor nerds are always evangelizing about 'properly exposing' everything,. sometimes that's just not the best way

i say let the highlights run wild! (within reason of course)

Heres a few shots from a corporate event I shot this past Friday. Check the 5D with an 85 1.2L in low light. I think they were all shot at 3200 ISO. Anyway I think this combo 5D and 85 1.2L just rocks.

^ yeah those pics look amazingly clean for ISO 3200. I use ISO 1600 on my Rebel XTi and it makes me cringe sometimes.

Yeah I used noise ninja but they're still very usable before the ninja. I shoot at 1600 and 3200 allot. Good glass, good sensor and good exposure in my opinion is the key.

Damn, I just tried out Noise Ninja, been hearing good things about it, and damn it's really good. Tried it ou on a ISO 3200 image I shot a long time ago and it made it look real nice. Could be better but I don't have the knowledge yet, all I did was auto, haha.

quick question before I pull the trigger:

D80 or D200? I want a camera I can grow into, but 1500+ for the D200 and a good lens is a bit too much vs the sub 800 price at which I can get a used d80 and a good lens.....
