3 weeks ago this weekend, my neck of the woods was hit by a devastating ice storm. I was fortunate to only have been without power for 3 days. Some friends were without power for over a week, and some areas on the outskirts still are without. I spent a fair few hours (in jeans) on clean up in my yard and around town the last few weeks. Some of these photos are mine, some are borrowed. There definitely was a certain beauty even in the midst of the destruction. And it was interesting to see the way the community responded and came together, it reminded me of the early days of Covid in a sense.

^ Probably Upper Peninsula in Michigan? Beautiful indeed!

But yea you guys got walloped @PartTimeBarista - glad you’re doing okay. I know it’s been really rough for some people. I’ve lived quite a few places in the US and the grid in Michigan is a level of shittiness only rivaled maybe by PG+E. That said this storm would have been a problem anywhere.

We've still got that Marks n' Sparks wardrobe 15yrs later.. i took the shelves out and gave it a coat of Farrow & Ball to make it suitable for a teenager :D

True. He should be happier considering I was able to avoid him with the tractor.

Trees were long overdue for a trim so I've had to be ruthless. That's hard for me as I'm one of those hippies that feels the trimming causes pain to the tree.

I'm the same Carl.. the first 10mins of a tennis match is spent picking up the worms which have wandered onto the court and putting them back amongst the trees..

Before i left work on Friday, i washed my hands in the sink, I turned the tap on but there was a baby woodlice which had fallen into the sink getting washed down the plughole.. like a coiled spring, i err.. sprung into action and covered the plughole with my hand before he got washed away.. alas, i was a second too late.. when i looked under my hand he or maybe she? .. (you know how these woodlice are with their pronouns) was hanging onto the metal thingy which catches the debris.. "hold on little woodlice" i ran back into the workshop and got some tweezers and picked him out, i put him on a piece of kitchen roll to absorp the water.. his little anteni were still moving around so i thought he'd be ok after he got over the shock.

Then when you get home and put the news on.. 300 dead today in this war, 200 dead in that war and you think "what the fk, why do i even bother" ..

Sadly, when i got to work yesterday morning, the little woodlice had died.. he was all curled up so it was possibly too late to defibrillate him with the 9V battery from the smoke alarm and a couple of wires.

I thought giving him a decent burrial was going a bit too far so i just chucked him in the bin.. :D

Looks delicious! Took me a few seconds. I was 100% it’s a boars head (I guess the upper cut of the knife looked somewhat similar to eyelids?)

I saw the same image at first.

Took my jeans and my boy to see Dizzee Rascal. Was pretty a pretty cool show.

I listened to his first album . My boy sometimes hangs out in my shop and it’s on music. The other day I asked what cool song he was playing, dizzee rascal. And I just saw he was playing in our town.
he was surprised his old man knew about the cool stuff and even joined him in the moshpit.

this type of moshpit was new to me. They open up some space in the crowd, and when the climax of a song starts everybody moshes in that space.

a lot friendlier than some pitts at hardcore shows

Adding to the gardening talk in the contest thread - I spend some time mostly each spring trying to set our now mostly established pollinator garden up for success. Light layer of mulch to spread this year after deadheading all of last years growth, and still some light weeding to do my best to keep out invasives. Lots of alliums, bluestar, goldenrod, false indigo (yellow), coneflowers, sedges, butterfly weed - I’m forgetting some - and a stray milkweed shoot setting up here. The goal is basically to have a little bit of prairie - mostly natives - in the front yard instead of grass.

We have a (comparatively at least) small lawn as it is but happy to have even less here. Bonus of my favorite tree a weeping cherry in full bloom. Okay well a tie for my favorite with out black walnut. I was wearing the contest jeans but no pic of that!

I’m not ‘bike packing’ as such so I have no bike luggage, just this small 13l hike/bike daypack..

https://www.sim.works/products/chips-bag-13l?srsltid=AfmBOopyy3VLlLzF2XprK4U4iw-ztV_B6TUMqUlMNYm3FXSO_gfst_wH

It’s only just big enough to hold a single season down bag, tarp and the pole

IMG_0475.thumb.jpeg.58a19dab7a3328df78d9502927836047.jpeg

..which is all I need for a single nights camp without food.. my rides are usually 60% road, 30% trail and 10% climbing up rocks with the bike on my shoulder, thankfully the bike is light af.. but it would be impossible to shoulder the bike laden down with luggage.

If I sized up to something large enough to carry the mat, it would be a 40- 50l alpine pack.. way too big for a single nights camp but I might try using the bungees on the Chips Bag to hold the mat if I go further afield.

Found a wild rhubarb patch while out on a walk today (wearing SC 66s). Became quite a harvest! Any suggestions on what to do with it all?
