I'm guessing it's because my calves are larger than his. they seem to "fill out" the jeans below the knee.

Yeah they look really good. I'm still contemplating going up a size or even the 666. I think the problem I had with busters and the flare was that I had to push them down to make room and the sag caused it. When worn higher they were fine in the leg but too tight up top. A size up may fix that.
