Local internet has been snail paced the last couple of days, which apparently just means more time to do other things.

Sister's bday dinner

dsc7550b.jpg

Slow-grilled spareribs with a sweet-and-sour honey glaze, roasted sweet potato wedges with chipotle-garlic aioli and a simple salad.

Had blueberry pie and fresh picked strawberries with whipped cream for dessert.

Had our (becoming a weekly) BBQ today with the TOJ family, for today I wanted burgers.

Here is the stuff before we packed it up and headed over to the grilling place:

Some 200g Australian wagyu patties (a blend of really fatty skirt, chuck eye, and heavily marbled front leg).. homemade burger buns that my girlfriend made, burger fixings including Kewpie mayo and some really great Kinokuniya tomatoes, a few pounds of antipasto salad, some huge tiger prawns, some asparagus, plus some more.

The finished product:

Dessert that my girlfriend made from scratch, using my very rudimentary toaster oven, immersion blender, and a dutch oven:

^ Yes. Yes.. Mo-fing-yes. I must've mashed at my mouse for a good minute, that's how primal that post got me. Food simply going in the general direction of awesome. Damn. Me though? Just another meal at home.

Dinner, Beef Stew with a heap of young corn, plated with as close to a softboil as I could get. (Still hung over from the amazing Gyudon I had.)

Drink, a photogenic pitcher of iced tea.

Desert was inspired by that NYT article on food and marijuana. Cereal, and ice cream were the words that stuck out, and I just wanted to emulate. Selecta Chef Series, Berry Strawberry Ice Cream, and Fruitloops.

Also is tiger veg just chinese parsley and some peppers? I never got it but that's exactly what it looks like.

Pretty much. I think this one was chinese parsley, cucumber, some chili peppers, and some scallions. Really good.

Xian Famous foods is opening on St Marks too.

Yeah, but it's all about sitting down in an underground mall that's super hot and smells mad weird eating lamb face on plastic plates. Haha.

Having a go at cooking dinner again for the family.

Going the same direction as Lemon Chicken and Fried Rice, next up was Sweet Sour Pork. Oddly enough, the recipe didn't call for crispy breaded chunks of meat. Probably have a go at adding it next time.

Next involved something I feel like I've got a good grasp at, enough so to invite a couple friends over. Stepped outside, greeted them with a smoke and then had at it. Getting consistently close to medium rare, had Ribeyes and a slow cooked spicy Hungarian sausage. There was mash and pasta too, but the combination of faded and hungry didn't make for great photos at all.
