Been meaning to post here for awhile, but haven't gotten around to it.  Here's the metal I've enjoyed lately.

Gorguts is my favorite metal band (previous 2 albums are even better, but take some warming up to):

Martyr is suuuuper tight live:

Ron Jarzombek has a serious claim as the most technically advanced guitarist in the history of the instrument (in the first vid, the first song is played exactly backwards in the second song, which starts at 3:06, including every single drumhit):

Ulver has been one of my favorite groups recently.  Most of their stuff isn't particularly metal anymore, but if you have a few hours to kill, I highly recommend browsing their catalog, particularly Shadows of the Sun, Perdition City, Blood Inside, and Messe.  They were one of the original black metal bands, but play an extremely unique form of music that fits best into "doom" these days:

If you're easily depressed, Ulver might not be a good choice.  If not, browse their catalog.  Every album is wildly different from the others.

King Crimson gets far too little credit for their contributions to the creation of both heavy metal and progressive metal.  In fact, I would argue that they are the band that invented prog metal.  A couple of tracks from 70s albums like Red and Larks Tongues in Aspic really started the genre, in my mind:

Speaking of prog metal, the genre seems to have become very stale.  The band that I've always considered to be refreshing and criminally underrated is Shadow Gallery:

Only about half of their songs are "metal", historically, so I guess this is why they haven't caught on as much as some.

Oh, and Focus by Cynic is still the best metal album of all time in my book:
