hey guys DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 broke up like 3 days ago. i was upset.

yeah actually they have been broken up for months.

i went to see controller.controller last february (?) and ended up hanging out with them after the show. about a year earlier i saw dfa1979 play with c.c. (twice in a row actually 7:30 and 9:30@ empty bottle)

since both bands are from toronto i asked "whats up with dfa's new album?" and they were all aloof. and i could tell something was up because the bass player just kinda laughed under his breath. i guess he was good friends with jesse.

i pressed for more details and they finally told me that jesse had told them he was no longer working with sebastien. they made me promise i wouldnt tell or go on myspace because the guys had not publically anounced anything.

needless to say i was crushed. dfa 1979 was by far my favorite band in recent years.

the two shows i saw last year blew me away. so much energy for two guys.

and as you can see i didnt exactly keep my promise. i posted this back on 2-23-06

dfa 1979 ( r.i.p.)

i saw them twice and they fully kicked ass.

oh and sorry for derailing the w.a.y.w.t. thread earlier.[/quote

other notable shows off the top of my head.

material issue@ cabaret metro '91. first time i was actually afraid for my safety. they covered "the boxer" and jim ellison (r.i.p.) was the perfect rockstar. skinny black jeans, docs, mop top and a vintage tshirt with the levis logo that instead read elvis. it left an indelible mark on my psyche. thats when i fell in love with live shows and im still searching for that tshirt.

and the rest in no particular order...

skatalites@metro '95 met the legendary lloyd brevett and tommy mccook!

greenday@macgregors '91 or '92. a girl i knew put them up for the night...on her living room floor.

white stripes @ metro 2001? 2002? awesome show. great chemistry on stage.

weezer in a roller rink with about 100 other people for a free show. they played "tired of sex" and rivers was like 4 feet tall.

toucan slam, orange crotch, greenhouse @ elmhurst vfw.

yavin four @ lombard log cabin

royal crown revue @ frankies blue room pre swing craze. lots of rockabilly cats, bikers and skinheads with a palpable air of menace in the room.

hepcat@metro with my pal vince vaughn

radiohead @grant park. to have lake michigan on one side and the chicago skyline on the other, stoned off my ass, listening to almost exclusively kid a and amnesiac tracks was c r a z y stuff

john williams @ravinia. to hear raiders, superman, and star wars live was awesome. i was 5 years old for the night.

name any punk or ska band (especially the pietasters) @fireside bowl

deerhoof @ open end gallery

mando diao @ empty bottle. it was how i imagine the stones would have been like circa '65. the hives kick ass live too.

blue meanies @metro always

squirrel nut zippers @ fitzgerald's before they broke. like 30 people tops. very talented people.

morrisey @ chicago theatre. he ripped on johnny marr all night. pure comedy.

social distortion and suicide machines in the rain @warped tour. best vibe in a crowd ever.

mike ness and deke dickerson@ park west got in for free and got back stage. some one threw a can of pbr at mike's head during his set and he pulled out a wad of cash and said "ive got $500 to anyone who brings that motherfucker up on stage"

oingo boingo in '95@metro waited for a cab with danny elfman and talked about his work on batman. yeah im a nerd k?

the cure, interpol, the rapture, mogwai etc @curiosa 2004. during "just like heaven" i realized i wanted to grow old with my girlfriend.

killer whales @ some crazy artist commune loft over the summer

css @ pitchfork last month in a 110 degree tent. sweaty sweaty studio 54 vibe.

the liars @ pitchfork. the set was too short but i got to meet angus and gave him one of my tshirts.

shit thats like 20 sorry.

i could go on but i wont.

I've seen a lot of really good stuff in my time, but the best night has to be a toss-up between Interpol at the Enmore in Sydney, with Carlos D on the decks at the afterparty (surprisingly, or perhaps unsurprisingly, a very camp selection); and the Buzzcocks two nights ago at the Zoo in Brisbane (a tiny venue, very intimate). After which myself and a couple of friends went drinking til about 5am with Pete Shelly and Steve Diggle.

Fucking awesome...

Best cumulative show would either be:

the USAisamonster/Kites/Eloe Omoe/Fat Day/ Life Partners

Neptune/ Black Dice/ Dev/Null/ Tastic

Single performance would either be Lightning Bolt at Terrastock 6 or Polysics on their "Polysics or Die/ the Time is Now" tour.

I think the best single bands I can remember right off the top of my head would have to be

The Wrens

The Animal Collective

The Juan Maclean (Both times, blew LCD Soundystem out of the water when they opened for them)

There are others but I'm tired and these were all great.

Edit:

Jesus christ I can't believe I forgot Man Man. Saw them before the fiery furnaces. Incredible.

aw shit the buzzcocks were good??? they played here tonight (probably finishing about now) and i figured it would be a let down....

best gig drop kick murpheys 5? years ago, more to do with crazy night in general than the band.... bottle of whiskey, exhibition opening, gate crash d.k.m gig, gate crash tv show launch party....didnt spend any money and escaped from all drunken encounters without bruises..

best because of the music .......the cure, wish tour....suck album but had waited so long to see them and the 15mins of the forest more than made up for friday im in frickin love

other bests are all nz bands

you gotta be insane if you think wish was a suck album, its their best.

you gotta be insane if you think its their best, please dont tell me you like wild mood swings aswell.

:judgementaloldgoth:

ok, it might not be the best, but it's up there. wild mood swings, blah, no one will tell you that's a good album, but when i break it down, robert smith is tops at writing pop songs, and wish is where that shit is the best. i could be safe and say disintergration is the best, or go out on a goth limb and say pornography is the best, but they're not.as an album, pound for pound, i'll put wish up there with any of the albums written in the last 20 years. shit, robert smith doing shoegazing before it was popular. listen to it again tg76, without any prior notions, and tell me what you think.
