Shoes that look better with age...

ohh nice! when is our eatons coming?

You'll all be following in my footsteps when they come ;)

The Eatons and Stow are my work 'shoes', along with the Coniston which is getting plenty of love:

And a little zug porn, with the Rannoch (left) and Kelso...you can see the difference in the leather creasing on the two - the Rannoch's is coarser and more rugged; the Kelso has a more 'refined' feel to it...

Great job on these Ben .

Made it to the Bureau today , picked up some espresso Trickers polish for my Rannoch . Another gents outfitters a few doors along the street retails Cheaney shoes . Most are vey heavily discounted , upto 50% in some cases . Wasnt overly impressed with the burnished leather country models , maybe being used to the heavy zug has spoilt me !l Comparing each made me realise what a good deal the Rannoch are now .

Hi. I'm a total noob when it comes to shoes. I've been stalking this thread every so often and want to try getting into them. I'm not really sure where to look though? I really loved the pictures posted by Paul T a few pages back but I don't know the name or where I could maybe try on/buy a pair? I think I really want a low top-leather grained type shoe (like the one below) if anyone has a good suggestion?

Those shoes are made by the now defunct UK manufacturer, Lotus.

For something very similar, both in appearance and build, try the 'Coldstream' or 'Caldbeck' by Alfred Sargent, the Rannoch 'Roxbergh', and so on...search for 'veldtschoen shoes' for more info.

CTB's suggestions are definitely the first places to go. The Alfred Sargents are, essentially, discontinued, so if you find a pair, grab em. That type of leather is called zug grain, and these are a traditional construction, different from the conventional Goodyear welt, called Veldtschoen. There's a post detailing most of the boots here, - you'll find that nearly every manufacturer (except William Lennon) that produces a zug boot also produces an equivalent shoe.

Altho we don't know who makes the Hoggs Rannoch boots or shoes (it's probably Joeseph Cheaney) they look to be terrific value for money, and very much in the tradition of the Lotus shoes. You can pick them up for around £160-180 at Red Rae or PPG clothing. They're more of a burgdundy coloour than this pic suggests - look at crashtestbrummie and mikebt5's pics of their boots which are the same leather.

The other alternative is to set up eBay searches for Lotus, veldtschoen, etc.

Tecnic and George Webb also made these boots and shoes historically, although Lotus were the originals and from what I can tell, the most well-known and highly-regarded by some distance.

Spent last night conditioning my own Tecnic and Lotus as the leather was still feeling brittle in some places...very, very happy with the results from some serious Saphir application :)

Judging by some of the prices that the boots and shoes are starting to fetch on eBay, I think that's exactly what some people are doing...those Tricker's veldts inadvertently posted on here a couple of weeks ago went for a couple of hundred quid, and a pair of Lotus boots went for a decent price today...

Tecnic shoes, given a fair amount of TLC recently:

The uppers are supple now on the outside, although a little more work is needed on the inside...and the Lotus boots are finally breaking in properly...

smitty, that's a great deal. I'd be tempted if they were just all brown. I think I want to try a bigger size just to see and at that price I could unload them on ebay if they don't... tempting....

Warning: pic heavy!

OK, here is something a bit different, neither American or Pommy.

One of the few remaining makers of one-piece riding boots - Australia's own R.M. Williams.

p6280003.jpg

Worked out a little deal with my local dealer & the factory, got the welt-stitched craftsman boot made in a very unique Australian leather - vegetable tanned camel.

Though camel is not native to Australia, we do have quite a lot of them - not to mention tanning of camel hide was first done in Australia (IIRC 1992?), and it's a very new leather in the history of making leathers.

p6280033.jpg

p6280007k.jpg

One of the strongest hides known, it has 5 times the tensile strength of cattlehide of equivalent weight...but unlike the similarly strong kangaroo leather, camel leather can come in at full-grain 8oz for shoe making!

The grain is also really interesting (and very tough), having both wool & hair follicles!

Only small complaint is the lack of a heavy leather mid-sole, but otherwise the fit is good, and moulds to my feet really well (can't beat a one-piece construct when it comes to moulding!)

But at least the heel-stacks are present, and installed better than my Alden 403s:
