i figured since we were talking about portraits, i'd post some that I made a couple years ago when i was in highschool/freshman in college. I was doing a project at the time that i'm continuing, but will probably never get finished because it ultimately concerns people that now live all over the country and in other countrys. couldn't pull it off in the 10 months I had at home, but I got a bunch of good portfolio stuff so all wasn't lost

I'm very interested in getting started in photography.

I will get a pentax k1000 this week and i want to know a couple of things.

How do i get started?

What equipment would i need?

Would I need a flash or can i adjust the camera to capture as much light as my naked eye could see?

Are the surreal pictures in this thread the product of photoshop or pure skill, and would i

be able to do that (eventually) on the pentax?

The whole thing that kickstarted and inspired my whole passion for photography was people. Photography of people, vagrants and portraits. I'd love to hear more comments on my portraits, this has been my favourite portrait so far. She's a really good friend of mine. I made use of the available light there, a little post-processing was done (contrast/shadows).

can anyone recommend some books to expand my photo knowledge?

right now, i play around, manipulate shutter speed, lighting, etc, but i need a better grasp on the basics.

also any suggestions for lenses for nikons?

right now i'm looking at the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G VR for all around (it is expensive but seems to be worth the investment?)

and the Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G for sports photography (won't work too great indoors though?... the VR is so much pricier)

If you got that kinda scratch to spend on the 18-200mm go for it, from everything i've heard about it, it seems to be a superb lens albeit a bit expensive. If you really plan to take photography seriously and not as a passing hobby go for it, you probably wont regret it, otherwise spend it on some Dior or Ann D or something...

The 70-300mm is a great low priced lens and works pretty well for sports photography (It's far from the most well made lens, but it gets the job done), the focal length makes it pretty inconvenient for indoor shooting, but im sure you have another lens to do that (18-200mm if you decide to purchase it).

What kind of camera are you shooting with btw?

Some action shots i took with my 70-300 for reference.

^Expired :(

Here's another good SD for B&H Canon sale. If you bought it under the non-sale price, I would contact B&H and ask for a refund of the price difference. Just put the PS* number in the search feature of the B&H site to get the correct page.
