Through pastures, to a little gate

IMG_1902.jpg

And, like Alice in Wonderland, through the little gate was a different world: the jungle!

We went through,

down,

Picture%252520601.jpg

over,

IMG_3351.JPG

and all sorts of other prepositions in the jungle

IMG_1905.jpg

to a beautiful little waterfall

C'mon, Homegirl!

IMG_3422.JPG

And, for those of you who have seen a fair few of my posts, this photo will be unsurprising

IMG_3431.JPG

Nice view, eh?

Ahhhh

IMG_1901.jpg

A "flame tree". Prevalent in Western Uganda, and gorgeous.

IMG_3435.JPG

Our guide showed us how, as children, they would harvest the flowers of the flame tree and, with the addition of a twig to each flower, make themselves great make-believe poultry farm magnates

IMG_3439.JPG

As well as how another type of local leaf could be used as velcro - ideal for building leafy sun hats

Having finished our trek, back to Fort Portal town we went

Picture%252520614.jpg

To reward ourselves with a shockingly good dinner of pizza and delicious Italian wine at Pier's Italian restaurant in Fort Portal

Picture%252520526.jpg

The next morning, up and at 'em, out of Fort Portal town southward toward more Crater lakes and Kibale National Forest.

On their way to school...

IMG_1927.jpg

at Nkuruba Lake to check out some campgrounds and, straight off, MONKEYS!

IMG_1931.jpg

This summed up our shared sentiment well

IMG_1935.jpg

We wound up staying at a different campgrounds, though, because they were quite nice. Homegirl did the heavy lifting in the tent set-up

IMG_1938.jpg

Not a bad spot...

IMG_1939.jpg

The next morning we decided to walk back, through village roads, to Lake Nkuruba to have a look around.

Tea plantations are all over this region

Stopped at Rwehambra (?) trading center for some breakfast

IMG_3461.JPG

Coming upon this scene made me happy. A grip of ladies and gentlemen out digging their fields, chatting away and laughing, laughing, laughing

IMG_3463.JPG

Oh how far we've come

IMG_3465.JPG

Back to the Lake Nkuruba campsite, where our friends also returned.

The run between stands of trees

One by one, they all made the risky trek

IMG_3501.JPG

IMG_3498.JPG

We wandered down through the dense vegetation toward the lakeside

And found a nice little path going around the lake

^ Thanks! Fortunately working (ie. being paid to live) in a country makes traveling around it much more economically viable, even when earning the pittance I have been for a couple years.

Jungles make me feel like this:

Up to a slightly different ecosystem

Picture%252520701.jpg

Wandering through village paths, wound up traipsing through a homestead

IMG_3607.JPG

IMG_2056.jpg

I was pretty nervous about hanging around for a minute to snap a couple quick pictures, due to the fearsome...

Then I decided it was a good idea to follow a "trail" down to the waterside again.

Finished out the hike by trekking through a different sort of "jungle": a primary school

IMG_3652.JPG

...where we picked up an entourage

IMG_2068.jpg

Finally they went their way and we went ours

IMG_3662.JPG

There's a storm a-brewin'

IMG_3673.JPG

The next night I discovered our tent was under close guard from all birds, small primates and other intruders. The next morning I made friends with our guard.

IMG_2079.jpg

We decided to drive into Kibale Forest a bit.

Lousy photo, but we learned that the locals have some interesting habits

IMG_2082.jpg

IMG_3694.JPG

Stopped for some breakfast on the other side of the forest. Mmm, katogo (sarcasm...).

Picture%252520722.jpg

Passed by this nice looking place.

Some more locals having a drink

Baboons everywhere! They're considered quite a pest in this part of the world. The babies are still cute, though!

IMG_2099.jpg

There must have been about 50 of them at this point. Kinda spooky.

IMG_2100.jpg

Didn't want to run out of fuel around the baboons, so stopped at a petrol station

IMG_2106.jpg

Picked up a bit of a DIY dinner

Get a room, you two. This is a family show.

IMG_2113.jpg

IMG_3713.JPG

Passed by some interesting exotic fauna. Notice how the body covering is carefully selected for maximum African-jungle-trekking-suitability and REI-supplied awkwardness. Me? Judgmental?

IMG_2118.jpg

Guarding neighboring crop fields from monkey invasions (seriously...)

IMG_2119.jpg

Back to Fort Portal. Damn traffic jams.

IMG_2120.jpg

After that action-packed five days, I met up with my good friend to visit her village home for the weekend.

IMG_2122.jpg

After so much moving for so many days, spending a weekend doing nothing but eating and sleeping was exactly what the doctor ordered. Not much to see; spent most of my time like this

Daniel.JPG

All right, I'll leave you all alone for a bit now. Got a handful of pictures (not nearly as much, I promise) to share from Nairobi, Kigali and my last days in Kampala (!!!) but I'll put those up in the next couple days. Now, back to travel-preparations!

This past weekend I went up to 'Cuse, Binghamton, well.. upstate NY, and had a bit of fun. To start the weekend off I had to drop off the dogs. Most of the photos lack image quality because they were taken from inside a car.

Then we were on our way to Upstate--5 more long hours. Couldn't do it without the help of some trusty snacks.

5925904033_e5e8e418c0_z.jpg

On the way up we saw a military convoy with trucks probably from Iraq since they had the opening for the machine gun, they also had the bullet proof glass.

5925905585_84324a5fe0_z.jpg

About 3 hours into the trip we were getting hungry so we stopped off at the famous Roscoe diner (so famous I never heard about it).

5926464916_9926cdce6c_z.jpg

No pictures of what i ate as I didn't feel good and was not hungry.

Then we hit the road again, and on the way up to Syracuse we visited Binghamton (my top 5 for where I want to go to college). Didn't take any pictures of the actual campus, but I assure you it is a pretty nice campus and maybe in 2 years you will be able to see it :)

5926465942_1c7b2e1fe2_z.jpg

Then we finally arrived to our destination which was syracuse, and we also visited SU which was a HUGE campus. These are just 2 buildings, the first one is the college for journalism and the second is for art.

5926466700_7f12d757b9_z.jpg

5926467296_d6a1e3f107_z.jpg

We walked around the campus a bit and ate at this pizza place since I was starving, but the pizza wasn't great, I was actually so hungry I couldn't wait and burnt my mouth to the point I had a couple of blisters.

Anyways we left eventually and went to this nice lake onendaga lake I believe was the name.

5926469594_410cd13132_z.jpg

We walked around there but went into town but nothing was open so we just walked around and it was a pretty nice town, but boring. Anyways we saw this nice GTO.

5926471520_9582bafd66_z.jpg

We then proceeded to go and have something to eat. I wasn't hungry at all so I only ordered a salad, and the place was mediocre (some Italian joint). Finally it was that time of day to go to the hotel and check in and as we were driving (this was the ghetto we were passing through) this barber shop cracked me up.

5926576822_c72cf9347f_z.jpg

No shots of the hotel as pretty much everything is boring.

Well, that was end of Day 1! Onto day 2.

Well we got up and had to find a place to eat so we found a little diner (which was amazing), no pictures though, and we hit the road again. The parents wanted to find a farmers market and we eventually went to 3, but on the way there was a great view.

5926577456_8bc9d70593_z.jpg

5926019915_c994ff4409_z.jpg

Then we saw this antique shop where I got a new camera! Well, technically it is 30 or so years old, but it is new to me.

5926579430_112f2d0ee5_z.jpg

We then left and hit the road again. Where we were was pretty much all country and farms, barely any civilization. Anyways there were windmills which to me was freaking awesome they are HUGE, and I know they are but IRL they look even bigger.

5926021187_e86a98b965_z.jpg

5926021899_dc4e0e7590_z.jpg

The main point of this trip was to visit the Baseball HOF museum. I fucking hated it (not because I play lacrosse), but because the shit was so boring. I swear, I will never go back there. After that we walked around cooperstown and found this cool shop that sold chocolate and some lady inside told us to visit her shop down the road. I did and bought this jerky, let me tell you this shit is HOT. They also had habanero jerky and I can barely eat this. Oh, and I also bought lego candy :)

5926023451_11d70bf7e1_z.jpg

Well, we left cooperstown since it was about 6 p.m. and we needed to start heading home we passed some cows, and such.

5926583308_558674140b_z.jpg

It was going to take a while but there was an AWESOME view of these mountains as you can tell from this photo, and excuse the annoying window but I was bummed that I couldn't take a shot outside.

5926024989_2287b84bbe_z.jpg

There was also a beautiful sunset but the rest of the trip home was mainly driving. We stopped at a farm stand and got some more stuff but that was pretty much it.

Gave this thread a rest from my posts for a day, now its back to my amateur hour.

This was my 2nd favourite Eastern European city. Budapest, Hungary.

Buda being the hilly side, and Pest being the flat side, separated by the long river Danube. Quite an unusual terrain for a country don't you think?

Fisherman's Bastion

IMG_1813.jpg

Hungarians are actually descendants from Huns! As depicted in the Heroes Square. Under every hero (ruler) there's an illustration of a significant battle in their life, carved in bronze.

IMG_1834.jpg

A school of pink stingray circling around a defenseless shrub patch.

IMG_1886.jpg

Detoured to the famous Gellert Geothermal Spa. Was a relaxing experience meditating with this great view!

IMG_1957.jpg

IMG_1961.jpg

Took a champagne cruise on the river Danube

Do we have a 'shit i found at the thrift store' thread?

I tossed on my Roy contest jeans and bought this guy, made my day.

I didn't want to get the camera all FUBAR, but here is evidence of a water fight I had this afternoon with the kids :

tumblr_lo8z3hJZJA1qd5balo1_500.jpg

After filling up about 80 of these damned things I was bombarded.

After we dropped the kids back home we decided it might be fun to get dressed up for no reason and go out, so we did. Headed to a local burger place I'd been wanting to check out.

tumblr_lo8xzgtmBR1qd5balo1_500.jpg

Some pictures of us 'dressed up'. It isn't tux and tails, but ...

6d21511b6521465e8b8d89f627f83ac1_7.jpg

We started out with a frosty mug of their home made (on the premises) root beer. It was so tasty, lots of vanilla which sealed it for me.

eff29b8c471d401094ead5279faae089_7.jpg

tumblr_lo8yo3iRXs1qd5balo1_500.jpg

Took a look at the menu. Always get a chuckle when I see places STILL calling them 'Freedom Fries'.

0bbfbc17b616451f8fe16d227b0217ae_7.jpg

Very promplty thereafter the food arrived, couldn't get the whole thing in, but this is important because I am smiling. Usually anytime I need to smile for a picture I have to think of this joke that always makes me laugh/smile :

' what did one tampon say to the other?................................... nothing, they were both stuck up cunts.'

so, this was a real genuine smile.
