apc petite standard, bought 01/2009. worn maybe a year total? washed once last summer & then these photos are after i decided to throw them on my roof after working in the community garden for a good rain soak in a midwest thunderstorm that produced golf-ball sized hail (only marble sized here) and tornadoes the next county over. the hail was a nice surprise - i figure it's comparable to stone washing denim though far more subdued. total process was 3hrs 80degree sunlight on roof, 30 minutes hail, 2 hours rain, 60mph+ wind gusts & 40 degree weather overnight. this natural rinsing experiment cleaned them up and makes the fades more pronounced. i edited them in photoshop to try to represent as close to their true color as possible:

I use to live a few blocks from the distillery district in a 100 year old pant factory where every resident was an artist.

Mill Street Brewery use to be based in the DD until about five years ago when they got too big and had to move production to Scar-city. They still have a mini brewery and store there.

Often I start these posts with "out early". But we were out early!

Billingsgate market, London, 4.50 am. This is where all the restaurants and retailers across London source their fish.

1outsidemarket.jpg

We were off for a shoot involving market holders. We had one guy we were pretty sure would do it, then it was all on spec. Slightly intimidating, as these are old school traders - Billingsgate has been famous for centuries for its loud foul language (Hence the phrase "swearing like a fish wife"). Course, they were sweeties. Went like a frickin' dream.

2marketfloor.jpg

We had to wait around for our first fella… every stall holder is crazy-busy, taking orders, moving fish around, writing up entries in their book. But obviously, you have real characters.

THis is one of them. "Mick eels".

3mickeels.jpg

We'd been taken in to the market by a friend owns a fish shop. She told us Mick was "abrupt". But I march up, give him a business card and a quick spiel, then his daughter kate goes "it's for a Blog, dad, you should do it." And then this big bear of a man, real East Ender, poses for photos with a tray of jellied eels.

They supply eels to pie'n'mash shops across the East End. Perfect for us.

4jelliedeels.jpg

I love this place. Filled with noise… we photographed five people. One of them, Ali, at the back here, is muslim, his stall is called Billingsgate Exotic Fish. We get him posing with a huge frozen kingish, this stern looking guy but with a huge smile on his face. Meanwhile, all the East End traders are shouting "Here ali, you know when they print that photo, you'll be holding an AK47!".

8Harring.jpg

All around, trays of fish; high quality, fresh, no fishy smell at all.

We photographed the white-haired gentleman on the left - they are the Bush family, one of the longest-established traders here. again, sweet people, when you maybe expected them all to be a bit… hard-boiled.

5Bushfamily.jpg

We'd got enough, but I fancied someone holding a big old crab. I'd tried this fella's dad, he put me on to the son, Gary. I was disappointed until I looked at that big granite face, and then he picked up a huge blue lobster in one hand, big brown crab in the other. still the market is manic busy, more people shouting and getting in the frame and ruining the shot. Julian, my photog mate, showed me: one perfect frame. Yes.

9Gary.jpg

His stall stretches over two units, hundreds of crabs, lobsters - we got him with the huge blue fella.

6am. Suddenly it's getting quieter.

10gettingquiet.jpg

Time for a cheap breakfast.

12cupoftea.jpg

I was a veggie for many years, and longed for this. THey didn't have my favourite fluorescent mustard, but it still hit the spot.

13sarnie.jpg

Dawn was breaking as we emerged

14dawn.jpg

Billingsgate was based by the Thames, from the 16th century. In 1982 it moved out of the city, close to Canary Wharf. At the time it was a quiet area, now the finance district is moving east, it's getting crowded. Since it was built, it's become framed by these phallic monuments to banking...

15billingsgateandbarcalys.jpg

Finally. Home. Dawn over Greenwich. Espresso machine is warming up, and an hour of peace before the school run…

been away for a long time. its my last 2 days of work before i begin preparing for my move to NYC on the 23rd of April, and the eventual relocation to Bejing at the end of the summer. got the loft rented out to someone (sad to leave this place), visa process is in full swing, trying to catch up as much as possible with friends before i head out. Saying goodbye to my little girl for 2 years is going to be really hard....guess Skype is going to be my best friend soon.

so not much time for sufu...but i've been lurking and have enjoyed the last month or so of stuff from everyone!

here are random shots from the 5DmkII from Hawaii. I forced myself to leave the camera at home as much as possible so I could really just enjoy myself there, and I'm glad I did. I'm also in a bit of a creative slump and have been so busy that I can't really get out and shoot much which sucks!

So lets start at the beginning...landed at the airport in the early evening. This lady must have been enjoying the view as much as I was...beautiful place, even at the airport.

5581628424_84c2360cbf_z.jpg

Didn't do much the first night, just had some drinks and then sat on the beach for a few hours after the sun went down...then took this from the balcony off my bedroom.

5581628894_9bcf8dcb84_z.jpg

The next morning was cloudy and a bit rainy for about 45min. as we went out snorkeling and diving.

5581629420_8e66ae28da_z.jpg

Then the weather really cleared up as it did without fail every day in the early afternoon.

5581631936_45083a4353_z.jpg

Ended up spending a ton of time at this beach later in the week...really chill spot with no tourists and really good for body surfing.

5581629966_e7d38c4e64_z.jpg

Did a bit of shopping on the way up to the north shore (got a sick patagonia duffle that I needed for impending travel), and spent a few days up there.

5581044669_93b2403543_z.jpg

Got up early every morning for this.

5581632904_ff1aa5c080_z.jpg

visited a friends place in Waikiki, spent the day at the beach before going out to yakiniku, and waaaaaay too much shochu.

5581633742_386be86a37_z.jpg

some rural north shore action. the landscape of this place is insane, never seen anything like it.

5581634604_99d4ef9fa5_z.jpg

coming back home from the north shore on the H-3 just after the tunnel under the mountains.

5581635096_cf253808cd_z.jpg

to be continued with some randoms, and then a few iPhone pics.

The prize of "Best Food on the Island" goes to the Pupukea Grill. A food truck just north of Waimea Bay...I have never had a better lunch, met nicer people (so much so that they come over and join you at your table and buy your daughter desert) so if you're ever in Waimea go there, you will love it.

Wonderful photos, Z. I like how everyone focuses so much on food in their posts here. Never fails to make me hungry.

Good luck with the moves! Mind if I ask what you'll be doing in Beijing?

-z- these shots are so crisp i miss seeing them. some really good stuff you shot, made me catch a bit of the traveling bug. it must be hard to leave the wife and little girl behind for 2 years, but time will pass really quick and with skype they're only a buzz away. hopefully things work out real nice for you!

Call me selfish -z- but as much it will suck to be without family for two whole years, I am ecstatic to know another person with the love of jeans will be in Beijing. I will treat you to a beer when you get here.
