Ran, Farmer and ah_long - you guys are making me hungry! And CONGRATS to Pomata!

Damn I love this thread.

I still owe you guys more pictures from the second half of my trip with my family, but for now... what I actually did today:

I went out with my good buddy and flatmate to take a look at the land the NGO he's started recently bought. He and a friend started United Futures Foundation based out of Sydney. They're building a primary and secondary school with a vocational training institute on an innovative education model that places heavy focus on community involvement. They're just starting to break ground for their first school in Mpigi district, just West of Kampala. He wanted to go check on how the land-clearing is going so I decided to hop my hungover useless ass in the truck and come along to check it out.

Damn traffic on the Bypass

IMG_2211.jpg

"That's a coffin on top of that matatu"

"Yup"

"Think there's a body in it?"

"Nahh"

"But would you be surprised if there was?"

pause

"Nahh"

IMG_2212.jpg

That's a big ol' plot of land. Presently they're just clearing two of their ten acres so that they can get up a couple classrooms and enroll their first primary class in February. Big ol' plot of land!

IMG_2214.jpg

We decided to walk the boundaries with his engineer so I could have a peek around

IMG_2218.jpg

...I really need to buy some fucking boots. Shit's ridiculous. Boat shoes in the bush? Really?

IMG_2216.jpg

The back part of the land butts up against national forest land. And wait... what's this bush? It looks familiar. And there's one over there too. Huh. Oh whoa there's a whole lot of them!

Soooomebody's been busy...

IMG_2222.jpg

I just read The Beach recently... gave me flashbacks!

My buddy's response: "Income generating activity!"

Apparently it's a pretty regular problem here that as soon as you buy land, people come and start snatching all the wood they can from it before you actually physically move in. Looked like some snatchers had been here recently (and would probably be returning soon).

IMG_2224.jpg

From the opposite corner of the section being cleared. And that's only a fifth of the land!

IMG_2225.jpg

While the operator went to get more fuel we decided we should take advantage of the fact that they were renting heavy machinery

IMG_2233.jpg

Pretty funny - it's apparently a government owned vehicle, so the guy could only work on the weekend. Aaand they got the rental for about 3/4 market price... somehow I don't imagine that money's going to find it's way to the "government" as owner of the truck...

Surveying the territory.

had quite the weekend...drove with some friends to Wisconsin to attend the Eve of Destruction, a damn fine demolition derby held at the Wisconsin International Raceway. Then Saturday was devoted to getting up early, making breakfast and tapping the keg, college football, more beer, and a very long "walk-a-thon" through a few small towns to visit every bar in the area, with at least one drink at each. I remember none of that evening, and the camera stayed home. but here are some from the weekend that I did capture.

this was a blast, reminiscent of my college days, and I did need a little vacation, work has been a bitch lately.

so you could say we were out in the country...

4985632766_db2553e3e5_z.jpg

got my ticket ready to go...

4985600732_f7fec831aa_z.jpg

threw the disc around a bit before we left...

4985600318_a78fe72a60_z.jpg

had some good Wisconsin beer...

4985599516_1a5febfa0f_z.jpg

finally arrived at the raceway, now to find a freakin' parking spot...

it was a beautiful night, actually pretty cold once the sun went down.

a bus race, which was amazing.

and a JET CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

plus extra explosives.

4985003611_b147e3588c_z.jpg

and finally everyone's favorite, the trailer race! where everyone drives around with something in tow, and the other cars try to knock it off. last one with something still attached to the hitch wins!

My girlfriend and I decided to go to a local art gallery event after we were denied entrance to a Derby Doll's roller derby event for not being of age. I needed to be 21 to be on the property. I wasn't even allowed to pick up my VIP tickets that i paid for since they wouldn't let me on the property.

so. fucked. up.

Anyways, my consolation prize for the night:

A few photos from my trip to MN last weekend.

Jim THome hit two home runs this game. Overtook McGuire I believe.

IMGP6638.JPG

MN State Fair. This cow got borned just as we walked in. Very cool. After deep investigation, the vet announced it was a twin! Very rare for moo-cows. There was a round of applause, the cow spooked and tried to run away, and it took four strapping 4Hers to get the old girl to chill.

I really like livestock.

Freshly fried donuts get my deepest recommendation. Best Thing I ate all weekend.

I took essentially the same picture as -Z-, probably at exactly the same time. Gotta love light thru smoke. (I agree, his photo is better).

^ shit's rad, Shangers!

Okayyy finally getting to posting some pics from the 2nd half of my family's visit to East Africa + my first real vacation here. I'm gonna take it in phases.

Episode 1: Flying to Kidepo

Kidepo is a national park in the far Northeast of Uganda - right on the border of Sudan. It's in a region called Karamoja, sparsely inhabited by the cattle-herding and -raiding Karamajong people. It's actually a travel warning area because occasionally UN vehicles in the area get ambushed by locals. Fun!

Soooo given the remoteness, getting there is a bitch. One can either take a bumpy-ass two-day drive orrrr.....

charter a Cessna! WOO!

At Kijaanzi airstrip, Pops showing how stoked he is on the idea

IMG_1577.JPG

That's home right down there! (3rd housing project-looking block from the left on the top row)

IMG_1601.JPG

Flying Tellasons. This plane's a six-seater like a Porsche is a four-seater..

IMG_1604.JPG

This country's real pretty

IMG_1623.JPG

Seriously... REAL pretty

IMG_0369.jpg

That's my brother. Sitting co-pilot. With his fingers on the controls. Terrifying.

IMG_1612.JPG

That's probably realistically a district capital - as in the biggest urban center in the area.

IMG_1784.jpg

Karamoja...

IMG_1786.jpg

See that cluster of green trees and brownish buildings on the little rise? That's where we're staying! STOKED

IMG_0373.jpg

Kidepo airstrip.

Mom says: "Congrats dear, you made it!"

IMG_1788.jpg

In Episode Two (whenever I get around to it): More animals than you can shake a stick at! And I can shake a stick at a LOT of animals.

Stay tuned!
