What are your jeans doing today?

To tell you the truth I was a little bit sketchy on going into the mines. You know cave-ins, collapses, etc. and when looking at the entrances of these mines my mind wasn’t settled much. The stories that Mike and his father-in-law didn’t help either. Mike told me not to worry about these mines, but that the mines the Chinese worked in were typically about 4ft tall and many times the workers needed to crawl in and out of them. Russ (mike’s father-in-law) was talking about times when he was wedging through a crawl space and the ceiling would crumble any time something brushed against it… very reassuring.

Some shots of the entrance of the main mine we went into:

The mines that we originally went into were not the mines we had intended on going into so we travelled further up the canyon to find the mines that Mike had in mind. He had scouted the area prior to us going up. After not finding the mines that Mike had seen before, mike’s wife and Russ had a barrage of comments about Mike’s navigational skills. Hahaha. So we headed back down the canyon where we had seen a few other mine entrances.

This is a picture out in front of where another few mines had been dug out. None of the mines led anywhere. It seems that whoever was digging didn’t find what they were looking for, but the result was like a honeycomb effect on the mountainside.

My father-in-law and me:

The trek back down the canyon seemed a lot longer than it did coming up. Some of the scenery.

Back at the site we looked over the loot.

I washed the denim pieces just by running them through some water. The denim still felt like it had some starch in it after it had dried.

The transformation is really easier to see in real life. The pictures don’t do them justice.

Here is another piece I had found. It looks like a brown twill fabric. Almost like a heavy chino or something. It looks like a fly. There also seems to be some rotted tack button or rivet connected. I would think it looks like a rivet as there is no button present. If it is actually a rivet, then that would mean it may be levis. Does anyone know of anything like this that could have been made by levis at the time?

This is the spot where it looks like a rivet was attached at some time.

Here is a pic of the backpack I made for the venture. Made of sanforized CONE selvedge denim. Thrown together in about 4 hours. It worked well, but I plan on making some changes. I didn’t have any buckles so the straps are fixed length right now. I will add some buckles so that they are adjustable.

Overall, I have got to say that this was an amazing adventure and Mike and his family were extremely welcoming. They fed us and would have housed us as well if we didn’t need to get back to our own family. Lovely experience that I will definitely do again.

they have them skewered alive, they are actually still kicking when they are on the skewer..

if you had the small fried crabs from asia, they taste exactly like that

From the Manago hotel, near Captain Cook on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii, we went down again to Pahonua o Honaunau, the place of refuge. If you broke any of the ancient Hawaiin laws, even ones which carried a death penalty, if you reached a place of refuge like this one, you couldn't be touched. Like finding sanctuary in a church, only with a beach and turtles.

Then we drove across the mountains on the saddle road., which runs between the two major dormant volcanoes shown on this scale model:

4978986620_efbac05859_o.jpg

The terrain up there was not terribly different from inland California- dry, rounded, and brown with dried grasses under brilliant blue skies:

Dotted with small farms:

There is a heavy military presence in inland Hawaii. We passed a large base and several convoys of large trucks and Hummers. The real kind of Hummers, not driven by rich ladies with blond pony-tails pulled through the backs of their Northface baseball caps talking on cell phones:

R1001174.jpg

had lunch at this place with my girlfriend and her friend. this place is called nandos and they serve chicken and burgers and fries (lots of it) with peri-peri sauce. i love this shit, its so good. we have an outlet in singapore as well but i havent been since the queue is always too long but the chicken is real good and the fries are always done so well. love it.

R1001179.jpg

no pictures but caught the scott pilgrim movie after lunch. possibly the second worst movie i ever watched in my life, after "ultraviolet". it made no sense at all and seemed pretty lame to me. mabbe it wasnt meant for people my age but i still expected more. headed out to oxford street after that where the gf wanted to check out a sale. tons of ann d, DVN, marni and ninja goth kinda shizz but nothing for me. check out the shirt that i wear too often for my own good.

R1001228.jpg

walked around for a bit since the weather started turning slightly warmer and more perfect. right round the corner was this chocolate store which had a lot of tempting chocolates. they came in all shapes and sizes and colours and flavours and shit was so tempting i had to try some.

chocolates

R1001230.jpg

and more

R1001233.jpg

made the gf pose for me to re-enact my award ceremony of me winning the eternal contest at the end of two years.

R1001235.jpg

oh look, BiG is awarding us chocolates instead!

R1001237.jpg

i love nuts (no pun intended)

R1001236.jpg

you know what this is? this is the fucking legendary magic mushroom. the top was a nice wafer like thing coated with champagne mixed chocolate and when you bit into the head (no pun intended again) you got a nice surprise.

R1001239.jpg

this caramel shit just squirts into your face (i swear no gay). it really did squirt onto my face. this caramelised shit is fucking good i dont know how these people make shit like that. we bought champagne truffles and macadamia nuts with chocolate and tons of shit like that. my throat hurts fuck.

R1001262.jpg

air vent thing to suck the smoke up but didn't work shit because i ended up smelling the same as the pot to hold the charcoal. i smelled like a coal miner.

R1001261.jpg

bbq-ed meat like cow tongue, pork, beef shabu shabu, sausages, squid, etc etc, wouldn't you like that in cold weather?

R1001263.jpg

oh yes im not gonna fuck around with the clock cos im hungry as hell.

R1001266.jpg

R1001264.jpg

R1001268.jpg

R1001269.jpg

Today I went to an Air Show at a local reserve base with my friends from my Air Force ROTC detachment. Pictures aren't the best cause my point and shoot can't do ultra zoom.

I managed to get this one picture of a B-2 flying over as I was heading back to the recruiting table we had set up:

IMG_0308.jpg?t=1284258066

Then the finale, the Thunderbirds. Unfortunately my battery died during their routine and we also started to leave early to avoid traffic.

This one was going so fast I barely got it in the picture:
