Lost cause. It's clear that you're right - Asians are the cancer that is killing asians. If you ever attend any of the As-am student group shindigs (AAA, KASA, TASA, FSU, AASU, ITASA, MAASU, ECAASU, KFC, OMG, WTF, BBQ), small or large, it's pretty apparent that most Asian Americans as individuals are the cancer that is killing themselves.

true.most of my neg reps received were from Asian members here.

hate hate hate

btw, i used to hate white female fat professors in my uni.

not in my case. i live with 4 viets and 3 koreans in a big house. i personally think viets and koreans are raised fairly similarly as far as parenting goes. I've learned that viet parents are prety strict. this is why you end up having Koreans hating Viets cuz theyre so similar. very cliquey...stick to their own kinds. once you look beyond that, viets and koreans get along very well.

damn dismal, you had it good.

i drove a 99 Accord for a good 6 years before my brother retired his '04 TL-S last year to me when he moved to Japan.

Yeah, I was hardparking king the entire time I was a student and was aware of that. That is about the only 'AzN' thing I ever partook in...

I started driving in like 1997, which was like a year or two after they came out with those white M3 Lightweights with the huge Class II spoilers on block risers, I think I came downstairs every morning for a year to beg my dad for one of those, and eventually came to find that my GTi had turned into a 325 overnight, it was good enough. That is a pretty pivotal point in a young man's life, getting your license and driving tenderoni girls around town all afternoon trying to find a way to smoothly segue from driving to sucking on puffy nipples.

My dad isn't the kind of guy to have expressly said 'you better enjoy banging 15 year olds while you can' so I feel like that was his was way of saying it, by giving me a little store-bought swag and letting me run with it.

i know viets hate koreans but do koreans hate viets?

Yeah, I have no idea whether they get along or not but I've always gotten along with Viets. Koreans and Viets really do get raised similarly and act the same way in their cliques, buying the bar for their friends or always hustling to get up, hating on black people, they have a lot in common. The potential for good friendships is there since they're really similar, but it'll never happen.

In all the honesty of his heart, he thought he was getting extra bonus points for the "ah ha! I'm totally hip with the Asian thing" thing.

I hope he took you to a good spot and not some shitty joint.

one time a guy took me to one of those joints where the sushi is on a conveyor belt. though that may be new, hip, and whatever in the american culture, it is considered very unclassy in japanese standards.

i never returned his calls.

though the fatty tuna was quite delish.

and im not talking about his fatty tuna.

man fuck you guys. i didn't have no car, and i sucked at math. birthdays was the worst days, now we sip champagne when we thirstay...

I was terrible at math too, I sat in a block and had to copy my algebra II homework off the jocks of all people, and they actually paid attention because our teacher was blonde and not decrepit. I read your post and I could hear Mike Park in my head singing "filled out my scantron and then I erase/ and the poor guy fails his final chance to graduate"......

What about thai, burmese, lao, tawianese, malaysian etc?

I met this lady recently that made me think twice about the "asian" label. She considers herself asian because she's from iran and geographically...you could say she's correct. But pple still associate it with the term middle eastern.

I have this weird Taiwanese fob friend who is obsessed with Allen Iverson, wears his hoopin cluthez all day, year-round, wears blue contacts, and goes after black girls exclusively... it got to the point where his tall tees were by his knees and his ball shorts were dragging the ground, and his pimp limp was causing him to be late to our class all the time... I've never really understood but just let him be who he wants to be... oh, and he break dances, but that was probably a given...

Not taiwanese, but love AI, but from Philly. He looks so weird in the baby blue

honestly, if asians dont start to realize its not about where youre from but where youre at, theyre just gonna continue to alienate themselves from other ethnicities that they now share countries with and things will start getting ugly. anybody remember what happened during the LA riots?

This is such a complex issue. And it's so tough to discuss on a board like this. I agree to some extent, as azyn americans we need to stand together, but as hit upon with the other guys below me, there is a reason why these cultural identities are so strong, 150 years, and even 25 years later.

I don't know dude, I think that it depends on each specific ethnic group. A lot of Koreans treat living in America like club med for the time before they repatriate back to Korea, I think the same goes for a lot of first-gen HK fobs. Most Asian people have been asked that question that goes like "no, I mean.. where are you REALLY from?" which can often be followed by "so... when are you going back there?"

Mixing races is all fine and dandy, but Asian-Americans all have different socioeconomic standings and like to preserve what they can of their culture, which is not wrong either. At the end of the day though, if you were some Chinese or Korean fob who came to this country on a styrofoam raft, spent like 30 years busting ass on the hustle, only to see your daughter being impregnated by a Cambodian breakdancing gangster from Longbeach in the backseat of a brokedown Cressida, how would you feel?

Did koreans come over on styrofoam rafts? Cambodian kids are fucking nuts

While I agree, it goes deeper than that. There is a much more complex history and context to the overall Asian immigration story versus other immigration stories; this is not to say it is more important or somehow more valuable, but just different.

A lot of shit went down during the L.A. riots that really was not within the control of the Korean community at large. Also, it becomes complex with the different bodies of people involved, the social motivations at the time, and the various media portrayals of various communities. Similar to a "white person in search of food vs. black people pillaging the store" situation with Katrina.

yup, every AZYN should read strangers from a different shore. good read.

koreans are fucking crazy. korean parents from my experience are much more strict than viet parents, but obviously we're both making blanket statements here

i think my parents were very lenient for koreans. While they did ride my ass about academics, i usually got my shit done on my own so my parents stopped eventually. My parents thought the legal age to drink was like 16 so they were lenient with me drinking in high school as long as i didnt drive afterwards.

but one thing ive noticed viets are not strict at all about is gambling. my friend Rich goes to the casino with his mom every weekend and gets drunk with her. weird as fuck

Nah, but a lot of Koreans didn't just go and grab a one-way ticket on Korean Air and start the American Dream, there are definitely some stories out there. Some of the Korean-Americans I've met allude to their days in Argentina and Brazil and how they speak perfect Spanish, at which point you're like "wtf?!?", Koreans came over here however which way they could. I once had a Korean-Japanese girlfriend who was 3rd gen Tokyo BAR, and one day when sitting down for a coffee with her grandpa (who had followed his brother over from Korea when he went to Kyoto U in the mid '30's) he was like "dude, where is Pennsylvania? Cuz my sister lives there..."

It's kind of similar to Viets, where a lot of you guys find out all these twists and or have random relatives in Denmark or Sweden or France....

yeah, def. my uncle actually fought for the french against the vietnamese in the war. lived in morocco for a few years, and easily transitioned to France as an embassy worker in South Vietnam.

it's definently interesting to hear other asians take on the immigration process. Obviously Koreans and Philipinos weren't given a free ride, but relocation for hundreds of thousand Laotian, Cambodians, and Vietnamese was literally on a boat.

what other asian countries still have mandatory army service? I know Taiwan and Korea do...what else?

I got excused from army service last year as I got my greencard. It was possibly one of the most relieving moments of my life as I thought I would have to drop everything and goto the korean army for 3 years.

Koreans I am not really sure about re: immigration stories, but I think more than a few rode on boats as well. It wasn't but just 20 years ago that some talented Korean kid was sewing your Air Jordans together in a dark sweaty factory at 3am, so while Koreans have hustled hard in this country, they haven't had it that great for too long. There is the same mix of backgrounds among Koreans as there is Vietnamese, though Koreans have anywhere from 5-25 more years in America on Viets since Koreans ended up in the pretty much the same exact position as Viets, except 25 years before, from '54. There are 3rd and 4th gen Korean-American kids being born nowadays, so I guess Koreans have an extra decade or two sometimes.
