Dont know if this is the right forum, but Im interested in a discussion around other clothes that are indigo dyed. Not just "blue", but having a real nice dark indigo hue... or is most blue clothes by definition indigo dyed?

Im mainly thinking about stuff like 45RPM and Kapital Jeans, but maybe theres a whole market of nice stuff I dont know about?

This ties to traditional indigo dye methods, and fabrics such as used for the kimmono, and different batic patterns...

Just rambling, but Im sure theres alot of knowledge around the subject here..

pure blue japan makes some cool shirts and stuff too. they're dye specialists.

and true about kimonos. hundreds of years of hand-dying tradition. that's where most of the japanese denim colors come from.

i have a little hanten (not too unlike the one in the link but much darker) that i wear at home which i believe is also indigo dyed.

There's an indigo exhibition in Toronto right now at the Textile Museum. Lots of indigo-dyed garments, including jeans of course. They mostly had examples of chinese and african dyed garments, but also had some housewares (woven baskets and such). There was also some chunks of indigo that you could touch (covered in plastic)...I think it was made from pig fat...I forget.

I had a tshirt from SDA that was indigo-dyed...Tom Dixon also did a polo for Lacoste that was indigo-dyed.

There's a fantastic book by Jenny Balfour-Paul, named simply Indigo, which covers a lot of different indigo clothing. Sarongs were traditionally indigo-dyed, as were skirts from South America, Toureg robes, and the Chinese 'Mao suit'. I still remember fondly the week I spent in the Japanese countryside as a guest of the Yamaha company, in an indigo kimono. More prosaically, I have a great shirt, like an artists' overall, that's piece-dyed indigo, from H&M. You can still buy piece-dyed indigo pants in the Camargue, near Nimes, and last time I was in Whitby, a fishing village in North Yorkshire, I saw a stall selling indigo-dyed sweaters, which were apparently traditional wear for fishermen. I look forward to wearing such things as I get older and wrinklier and even more deranged.

Don't forget Persian carpets, too; they can be hundred of years old and yet the blue indigo survives intact, whereas the reds, which are usually light-fugitive pigments, have long disappeared.

I did post pics of my indigo howies cardie somewhere, its a very dark indigo but I used flash in the pics, it was designed to fade, has raw edge seams etc very nice retail was £100 so I presume they did go to the trouble of indigo dying it and not just describing it as such....

here they are

Pbj make similar kind of sweat tops, very cool tops, I think samurai may do too but I may be mistaken

I think for natural dye stuff stuff Kato, 45rpm, Sugarcane, Kapital are the best bet.

I found this, regarding Gansey sweaters .

"By tradition, the sweaters worn by all kinds of seafarers, whether they be fishermen, naval or retired sea salts, are navy blue—a colour reflecting the sea and sky. Before the advent of synthetic dyes in the late nineteenth century, blue was obtained by using natural indigo, a plant extract imported from India. However, summer weight ganseys, knitted in a three- or four-ply yarn rather than the usual five-ply, were sometimes pale grey or fawn."

Men's Indigo Cook Weathered Jacket $681.00

A lightweight slightly weathered suvin cotton sport jacket with thin piping around the hip pockets. Indigo dyed and cut slim though still a relaxed fit. The sailor buttons are inspired by those found on vintage U.S. military jackets.

Great thread... Ive been looking for some indigo pieces... mostly from eternal as they have a wide range

surprisingly, gap had a decent double zip cotton knit indigo dyed hoodie last year. I picked it up, it bleeds everywhere still.

I saw a henley they had that was a pretty deep blue that was indigo dyed too... Nice stuff and nice fit surprisingly... regret not picking it up ...

its not clothing, but i was looking for an excuse to take some photos of these beautiful antique javanese batik wall hangings i picked up in bali a few weeks ago. the darker one has a hand drawn pattern on it, while the lighter one i believe was made, at least partially, with a stamp. both are hand loomed and indigo dyed. the photos dont quite do them justice...

im tempted to post some photos i took at a textile plant, where i watched them make ikat fabric on these foot powered wooden looms. i saw the stone vats where they dyed the yarn, and they had some indigo colored yarn drying on a concrete slab in the sun, which was absolutely gorgeous. i picked up some nice textile there as well as had an amazing experience...
