verb, have you bought anything as the result of your scouring?

I didn't see much, and the stuff that I did was out of my price range ($2k+). Here are the items that peaked my interest:

M.A.+ double coat

maplusnv1.jpg

John Varvatos Blazer in dark grey w/ thin white stitching. The store in SoHo had this coat in a 48/50/52, none of which fit me very well. It's a gorgeous texture, a mix between professor style tweed-ish and a nice sleek wool. I went to Barney's today to see if I could get it in my size but no such luck. Might head back to the Varvatos store and see if they'll order it for me. I'm guessing it's this one:

NDC Brown Boots. Wish they had these in black, I'm not sure if I like brown boots with grey/black pants unless they're very dark brown.

Acne Max Night New 3 in dark grey. They're a slightly heavier wool than your standard dress pant and provide that nice touch of texture. Nothing that would stand out much but a nice subtle piece to compliment your outfit.

The only thing I actually bought is a John Varvatos tie today from Barneys in a nice brown/grey mix. It's wool and the right width, not too skinny.

Anyone else have any luck?

Very cool concept, I'd love to see this look with a black cross necklace dangling from the neck of the shirt (worn like a tie), the tails on the waistcoast elongated, and the red in the bondage-style pants replaced with a darker shade of grey.

I like the detail on the waistcoast and I think a reverse-lapel (not sure what the term for this is, but envision the draping parts attached to the waistcoat like lapels all the way to the tail) would work as well.

Also, the sleeves rule, I want some :D

Forgot to add that I saw this jacket over the weekend and it would fit perfectly if sized down a bit:

IMG_3125.jpg

The lapels are very slim and short, similar to the collars that peepz used to wear back in the day. The material is almost felt-like so it looks rough and fuzzy. Finally, the lower portion (my jacket terminology is lacking) is cut away and almost forms a tail in the back.

That jacket is a nice nice piece - ive been looking at it for ages, obviously never going to buy it as I cant try it on...

Im kinda drawn to oliver twistish clothes

Loake make a new model this season looks exactly like the NDC ones, even has the curvey sole... ( I own two pair of NDC, they are ok but if I was to buy shoes again id go to an english maker... )

Muji make boiled wool sweaters..

I think if you can afford a julius jacket or something like Ann D or who ever from atelier then buying any old jacket from oxfam and tailoring it is the best option..

Wear a cool scarf or sniket or rag with some muted coloured fingerless mitt.

Also chelsea boots would look good too, maybe waxed brown or suede...

I looked on their site and didn't see anything from Loake like the NDC boots. Could you link?

I agree about the jacket prices. I think getting something tailored from scratch would even be easier and much cheaper.

so they are not toe cap style but I think they still have a vaguely similar aesthetic

its just a cheaper and possible better quality option.

also im going to throw this guy in

the j peterman comapany

guess you have got to be abit careful here as not all of the pieces are particularly right - some are western or WW2 looking to me but the tweed and cord stuff looks alright and is mid priced, the sale section is good too.

Maybe a horse rider here could link to jodpur boots, there are some around at pediwear but im sure taller ones would really fit the aesthetic.

Just the thing for riding your steed ( read ford escort ) through the streets ( read dual carridge ways )...

the plaid pants look more "golf punk" than oliver twist.... imo

I have no idea- I would hope at that price that the quality is good, ( i tend to think quality plateaus at mid priced items )..... I dont really like ordering jackets online, I just make mistakes.

Maybe someone in america has one of his products and can fill us in...

Yeah- the pieces do look interesting.

I think the leather waistcoat over a loose linen shirt, maybe grandad collar would look ok.

Im sure ray winstone sported something similar in the canterbury tales series the beeb did a while ago...

From what ive seen over the last few pages the whole Oliver twist style is running quite close to the whole hollywoods-ideaof-postapocalyptic-dystopic-future sort of thing, those coats from atelier look more Cormac McCarthy world than Oliver Twist to me imho

^^haha, I was thinking the same, that my idea of oliver twist-style seems to differ from what is posted. Those plaid pants for instance are horrible, and the julius+ combat boots doesnt reallly fly either. That one button jacket posted is really cool (and very similar to a jacket worn in an old book about work in the 1900th century I have), but should have aleast 2 buttons more..

Im still looking for the slouchy heavy wool pants, I imagine those to be key!

yeah totally - but I think film and fashion muddle the two themes awfully so its hard to navigate.

The black biker jacket above so not right, also ties - nah - I think cravats and rags and scarfs are much more aligned with the style in question.

Sbobo- anything with a hint of goth or urban or ninja shouldnt really be considered, however I imagine quite a few items could be found that muddle the two themes ( mid 19th century and one of the 3 mentioned previously )..

the guy on the left is wearing a covert coat ( you can get em from Tyrwhitt, Boden, everywhere ) but look again, the lapels, they are certainly a different shape from what could be found today. Infact I imagine it would be extremely difficult to find a coat with similarly cut lapels...

My goal is to modernize the look with pieces currently available, or in other words adapt ideas from the oliver twist stuff into my style. I'd say that the blazer above is a good example, as are the heavy wool slouch pants superbobo is looking for. Ties serve a nice addition to Cravats, which are taking things back a bit too far, imo.

I believe the idea is to interpret older fashion through a modern eye, without going so far as to just copy old looks. I'm sure others in the thread have other ideas, however :D

Having said that, there can be alot of overlap, especailly with Hollywood's portrayal of the period pieces from that era that do tend to bridge the gap between The Postman and Queen Elizabeth.

Verb - to be honest I personally would prefer to wear a bastardised piece than a truely historically faithful piece, its probably easier to pull off.

But this place is awash with purists, look at the Amerkaji/20th century america styles floating around in WYWT alot of people, bill, cotton duck, jimmy really looking great in quite historically accurate outfits...

If you want a modernised take on the style then atelier and those sorts of brands should be just right..

Im going to bed now, apologies if ive been a thread hog... or if im speaking a little too authoritively on the subject ( that really I know bugger all about! )

Good night.

Not at all, I think it takes both sides of the coin (as well as the inevitable 'FUCK DICKENS' opinion we'll get eventually) to make a great thread and progress!

I found this shot today and it has some great details:

jb_nation_poe_1_e.jpg

Note the shirt collar and the way the jacket fastens

On a sidenote I have to admit I was severely disappointed with the chimney sweep shots online, as I thought it would be a great source of inspiration. Instead all I see is fucking dick van dyke dressed head to toe in brown corduroy.

I agree with that the style should be modernised or just and influnce , but imo focus are on the wrong things ;) The kids in OT has a much more wearable and cooler style than the adults, and the image that comes to mind is more that layered ragtag grey/brown look, than the victorian topcoats and hats, which to me seems alot more costumey.

With the right pants, an old and worn EG bedford in grey or brown wool and some kind of distressed newboy cap, and the look is almot made. Add a brown/white shirt and some scarfs, voilá!

That shot is super classy, and is totally doable minus the napsack. Linen shirts are also key methinks.

thread reminds me of:

ResidentEvil3-3.jpg

(goddamn...)

That Robert Geller dude has some interesting stuff. And ditto on the thrifting, go heavy on the tweed! Might need some tailoring, but will be way cheaper than looking for some avant garde designer. Some awesome camel hair car coat with tweed trousers and some carpe diem boots... and a top hat. Its like franz ferdinand meets slash...

i still fucking think milla is one of the most beautiful women alive

For anyone looking for pants to fit the bill, I just received my Acne Max Night New 3 (longest name ever) pants from Hejfina since Opening Ceremony was out of my size. They are PERFECT. Nice warm wool that is just thick enough to slouch nicely but not so heavy that it weighs you down or makes you sweat.

Great texture and color (think an updated version of tweed in grey).

Nowhere near as slim as my Acne Max jeans, more of a straight/full leg cut. Loves it!

Will post detailed pics when I round up my purchases shortly.
