The Evolution of Jeans: Pictures, Scones and Tea

I've been waiting with these to post a comprehensive "before and after" thread. These are some Jean Shops that I got in January. I ride my bike quite a bit in them and the crotch is fading a bunch. They didn't seem to do anything, but now they're fading like crazy and getting all streaky. I haven't really kept a diary per se, but every time I wash them I've taken a pic of them. They started off as a pretty stiff 1 wash. As of right now, they're really really soft, (and I did starch them at first, but not anymore) so I think any future wear is going to be much less defined. I tried to let in as much natural light as I could when I took the pics, and I also adjusted the levels in photoshop.

3 months right before I jumped in the shower wearing them and went at them with some Dr. Bronners (they were mad fucking stinky)

5 months (after being washed with that sugarcane denim treatment in a machine) Unfortunately the honeycombs have been shifting like crazy and (I'm ashamed to admit this) but I tried folding them to get them to reform where they were originally, but there are some areas where they started creasing totally differently and faded kind of off...

today (almost 8 months) They haven't been washed since june, but I just spent a week cleaning out my mom's disgusting basement wearing them and I did some yard work in them and sweated my balls off. I don't know if it's the light or what, but it seems the fading has accelerated a lot from the last set of pics.

and the leather tag to boot.

I was possibly going to light a bit of flame to that tag to get a burnt look, much like the jeans CMF posted with the match marks on them. What do y'all think?

I like the way those are coming along. I have a pair that are in their 3rd month. They seemed tough as nails at first, and wouldn't fade. Now though they seem to be fading quite fast. The streaks in the denim are coming out better. I think they shall prove to break in nicely.

yeah, it's funny. At first I would scrutinize them every night when I took them off and looked for wear; it took forever for any to appear. Nowadays I wear them and forget, but when I throw them in a heap on top of my SD103s I'll notice how much they've faded in comparison. I think they waited for me to stop paying attention before they started fading just to spite me.

did you soak them before wearing?

From the pictures it looks like they shrank and the honeycombs moved up your leg.

I didn't soak them. I was under the impression that they were 1 wash when I got them in the mail. Since they weren't that super rigid gray/black dry appearing denim I just started wearing them right away and I think I did lose a little length after I washed them.

yeah, i don't know what horrible says about the 103's, i wear the shit out of mine and fading is pretty slight, its ok though, don't plan on washing them until next year and somets are coming soon!!!!!!!!!!

103's are wear so much faster than APC's for example. I put a new wallet in the left backpocket and I could see the outlines of it after just a couple of days and when I put something in my coinpocket it only took maybe two days for the same thing to happen.

I think your pair is coming along well for 4 months too.

damn poly, what do you think about the bigger differences between your rrds and 103s.

i mean, they're both looking very good in different ways.

well, the nudies were my first raw denim in october of 94, never soaked, just worn for like 6 months like nudies says, the first wash was kind of a disappointment, but as it wears on and you keep at it, you'll get better results. SDA's are def my favorite cut at the moment, remind me of the old levis premium cut. much better denim, a bit more stubborn, was bought one wash on ebay, def amazing jean.
