this morning running an errand a woman waiting at the bus stop by the iconic potrero hill mural told me how she remembers the mural being finished in the 80s. the mural remained untouched by graffiti artists until somebody decided to make the potrait of oj simpson reflect the stories of him in the news.

later in the afternoon i decided to go for a walk to borders to read magazines. on the way over the 4th street bridge i saw a boat for divers who were checking out the structure. a block along on the 3rd street bridge and i saw the more usual kind of divers you see in the neighbourhood around rubbish day.

i stopped on the way home to get a fit pic, in the wonderful 3d light so kindly provided by the architects responsible for the uscf mission bay campus.

thank you for all the feedback. i have always thought of the 3001 as flathead's take on the original 501z, which as a 50's jean has the attendant sharply tapered waist and accompanying hip flare.

i got a pair in august 2006 from take5 in hong kong, the staff their strongly encouraged me not to size down on the jeans so i ended up with a 32".

there is a style of wearing vintage style jeans in a relaxed fit that i have often seen on long term collectors, and seemed common in asia [probably due to the heat]. i know it became unpopular on supertalk, which more than likely this stems from members having their introduction to raw denim though modern cuts [helmut lang,apc.nudie]. a modern cut jean has a relatively square top block, the shape works much better when you squeeze into them.

when you have a jean like the 3001, or indeed any 50's shape jeans, there is a case to be made for wearing them in your trouser size or true waist. they will flare at the hips, they will be bigger in the seat than a modern jean, the dead straight drop that extends from the hip to the hem will be your reward.

damn the original arcurates on the flathead were beautiful.

yesterday i went for a walk to get the best carne asada tacos that i have had in the city, the truck that they come from seems to be named after a gang and is across the road from the halls of justice.

around the corner right in an area of soma that roger ebert confused with both the mission district and skid row [which in the city could only be the tenderloin] there was a nice strip of light created by the gap between freeway lanes.

once downtown i saw what seemed to be a sports team outside the big conference centre.

ended up on bart to the mission popping my head in to say hello at self edge, and wandered home from there.

yesterday morning was spent listening to the giants get themselves into trouble in the series closer against the cincinnati reds before jumping on bart to make the trek down the peninsula to meet up with kiya.

during the short transfer at san bruno bart i took advantage of the partially open roof:

after enjoying some great vietmanese food and coffee at a spot that kiya has been going to since he was 15, we went to tanforan to see a movie. once in the mall the sales assistant at shoe palace noticed how much kiya's visvims looked like the latest sneakers from polo and suggested he may like to try them.

shoe palace, hot topic, movie, bart, a walk through the mission and home to play hunting with taco for a bit before my daily walk over the hill to meet b i z z y at caltrain.

i tried anchor steam small beer which is the closest in taste to a bitter beer that i would have enjoyed on a hot day back home.

time to dig out a white t-shirt.

a slow start to the day mostly chilliing around the house. in the early afternoon the neighbourhood started to get noisy with a funeral procession heading to one of the local churches, the cars flanked with a motorbike escort. much later in the day i saw what seemed to be the tail end of the funeral with the poiice arresting one of the guests outside of the church.

i headed off to self edge to say hello and ran into sidney lo i followed him to the alley and hung out while he got product shots for self edge

alley.jpg

from self edge we went to visit our friend benny gold at his flagship store in the mission. benny was in full preparation mode for the release of a collaboration t shirt with a couple of the original supertalk members done good.

after we were done shooting the shit i headed off to meet your maker, to say hello to kixslf in town with the tanner goods to promote the brand. i talked to howard from ab fits who was excited to show me his jeans celebrating 20 years of his store being open by making 20 pairs. after a coffee made with scientific precision by jeremy the owner of 4 barrel coffee it was time to head across the 18th street overpass to meet b i z z y.

once home b i z z y and i made and consumed the latest installment of the ongoing series adventures in fake meat. the vegetarian double down, consisting of quorn chik'n patties baked and then spread with avocado surrounding two slices of tempeh fakin' bacon, this was a much greater sucess than our various attempts at vegetarian and vegan mexican style bacon wrapped hotdogs.

the tour jeans and i had an action packed weekend, featuring chicken and waffles, jawnz, a birthday, a party, and filled to the brim with superfriend goodness. the only thing the jeans and i didn't do was record it for you all.

this morning my neighbourhood lit up with the sounds of sirens, while sirens are anything but unusual for the city, this was a cacophony, emergency vehicles coming from all directions.

i left in order to get coffee and food and saw the source of the commotion, the off-ramp for the 280 freeway 4 blocks from my house, was the scene of an accident involving a taxi and a support pillar, there were more emergency vehicles than i had ever seen in my life and the street was closed.

i wandered over to survey the scene and took some photographs of the aftermath.

this morning started early as i woke and got up in time to watch the second half of the all whites versus slovakia, the equalizer in the dying seconds of injury time gave new zealand it's first ever points in the world cup.

the last time we were in the world cup i was young enough that the smurfs at the local servo were much more interesting than the collectable all white player medals they were giving away, and there was but one moment i remember from watching the all whites in their very first world cup.

perhaps kiwis are an unpatriotic bunch but everybody at my primary school wanted to be zico.

later in the afternoon after some work and a walk i found myself in the vicinity of the sf giants county fair, a small event in the car park of at&t park. there are a few small rides and a smattering of fair food not much to get excited about unless fortunitous timing gives you an opputunity to run into lou seal.

world.jpg

across mccovey cove and into the 'homeless section' to watch batting practice and kill some time. this section of at&t park is free for anyone to go into and watch some of the game, if there are a lot of people they rotate the viewing spots every 3 innings. being at ground level you get incredibly close to the players as they warm up in the outfield for a game. there are regulars who are die hard fans and the talk is often about the finer points of the games and the rise and fall that goes along with being a fan of the giants. one thing that everyone agrees on is that the giants have felt much more like they could be contenders since they added the franchise.

i am an A's fan but im a florida state football fan and since posey went to fsu i kinda followed him by default reading the fsu boards. dude played all 9 positions in a college game and had at least one strikeout in that game so thats pretty legendary.

posey has brought some offense to the giants this season as has torres and huff. most of the older giants fans have been excited since the giants built up the pitcher roster with lincecum, cain, and sanchez. zito seems to have found his form after moving across the bay which makes a big difference.

lincecum is the big star though, even through his recent rough patch he is the one player that the giants fans truly love and is treated like a rock star, his getting busted for possession of marijuana earlier this year helped cement his image.

do you have a lincecum hat/wig?

have you seen him?

there is no need for any kind of fancy dress, hood up over his hat covering his stoner metal dude haircut.

birthdayboy.jpg

except for the hair i have been known to wear something like that to the game

ball.jpg

i will freely admit to being a fan boy especially as it is his birthday :D
