Kimi, yeh the dull russet is fantastic stuff, loads of grain and bags of character. I had a RW 1401-P in it and it looked the business but in my nerd-quest for the ultimate A-2 I sold it on as I couldn't deal with the collar. Daft sod I was too as it fitted perfectly.

Which contract you getting?

just bought a Bill Kelso A-2 second hand to knock about in. it's really nice and a great fit but ain't no good wear! then again it did only cost £185!

Nice to see Goodwear getting some more attention, great jacket btw. Also nice to see the recent few pages of original G-1 pics - the variations between conracts. Really love the various undercollar US.. stamps on earlier jackets. Good stuff.

looks like it was to give the leather some stiffness to make the collar fold in the right place. you can see where the crease of the collar fold following the arch just of the stitching.

the stitching is to help the collar stand up when the wearer turns the collar up.

i was thinking of the rows of parallel stitching when i gave that last answer.

the diagonal stitching is to hold a piece cotton material to the back of the leather. the material is backing for the mouton.

you see the same stitching on navy peacoat collars, i think as well as the above it adds stiffness to the collar when its turned up

okay cool. i stand corrected. only ever seen it on collars with mouton attached and guessed it was to hold that piece of cotton on.

screen grabbed this from ebay about a year ago because it's the only time i've seen just u.s. stencilled. seller said it was issued to the u.s.marines rather than u.s.navy.

I think when it only has the US stamp under the collar, it's an AN6553 or an AN-J-3a, which were both only short lived production/contract-wise. I once saw an early G-1 with USAF in yellow under the collar.

Never seen one since.

Yeh, found on the AN jackets as they were designed as joint service and not just USN.

Great G-1 Deluxe, real nice, I particularly like the purple-ish knits.

Here's my 7823, I love it but you can tell straight away that the mouton has had it. The waistband depsite being for an A-2 is fine by me but the cuffs and lining are knackered.
